You Will Never Look At Water The Same!!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Oh my God, what a fascinating film, it's just amazing, you have to watch this.

Wikipedia-  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water
Water is a chemical substance with the chemical formula H2O. Its molecule contains one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms connected by covalent bonds. Water is a liquid at ambient conditions, but it often co-exists on Earth with its solid state, ice, and gaseous state (water vapor or steam). Water also exists in a liquid crystal state near hydrophilic surfaces.[1][2]

Water covers 70.9% of the Earth's surface,[3] and is vital for all known forms of life.[4] On Earth, it is found mostly in oceans and other large water bodies, with 1.6% of water below ground in aquifers and 0.001% in the air as vapor, clouds (formed of solid and liquid water particles suspended in air), and precipitation.[5] Oceans hold 97% of surface water, glaciers and polar ice caps 2.4%, and other land surface water such as rivers, lakes and ponds 0.6%. A very small amount of the Earth's water is contained within biological bodies and manufactured products.

Water on Earth moves continually through a cycle of evaporation or transpiration (evapotranspiration), precipitation, and runoff, usually reaching the sea. Over land, evaporation and transpiration contribute to the precipitation over land.

Clean drinking water is essential to humans and other lifeforms. Access to safe drinking water has improved steadily and substantially over the last decades in almost every part of the world.[6][7] There is a clear correlation between access to safe water and GDP per capita.[8] However, some observers have estimated that by 2025 more than half of the world population will be facing water-based vulnerability.[9] A recent report (November 2009) suggests that by 2030, in some developing regions of the world, water demand will exceed supply by 50%.[10] Water plays an important role in the world economy, as it functions as a solvent for a wide variety of chemical substances and facilitates industrial cooling and transportation. Approximately 70% of freshwater is consumed by agriculture.[11] Read More Here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water

Dawn is a SAHM to two rambunctious boys, a 6 year old and a 2 year old. She is also the owner of Dawn Fry Photo, a portrait photography business. Dawn enjoys blogging, photography, cooking and spending time with her family – not necessarily in that order!

She fancies herself a jack of all trades, and probably knows a little bit about most everything. In her brief work history (BC – before children) she worked as a music teacher, a cocktail waitress, hostess with the most-ess, a catering sales assistant, a financial planner’s assistant, a model coach, professional photographer, health food store manager, event sales manager, wedding planner and a slew of other things that make her a master of, well…nothing!

At times things get crazy, but she tries to find the humor in it all. And with 2 mischievous little boys, you know she’s likely to have a funny story from time to time!

If you would like to contact Dawn directly, please drop her an email at dawnATmusingmommiesDOTcom

I’m Kim and I’m a SAHM to a 6.75yr old daughter and a 4yr old son. I too consider myself a bit of a Jack of All Trades! I do know some about a lot of things. I enjoy photography, reading, audiobooks, crafty things, baking, podcasts, and I am a TOTAL Twilighter (a huge fan of the Twilight Book Saga). I am a hairdresser by trade, but I have experience in running a business, waitress-ing, dog grooming, and banking.

I was introduced to podcasts about a year ago by my husband. I fell in love with them. I have a list of podcasts I subscribe to and I’m always looking to add more.

Don't Let Them Tell You "You Can't Do That!"

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

This morning on Twitter I came across
Rob Tew's Blog and he had this Video(below)

TEDxAsheville - Eustace Conway - Traditional Lifestyles of the 21st Century

I just loved what Eustace had to say, and it made me think of my dad and give thanks to him today. He was only in my life 11 years, but he must of had some great visions.

When we were kids we had rabbits and pigs, chickens and a whole big peat bog down the back where we used to go pick blueberries, and dad hunted the foxes that were killing his chickens.

I remember helping him pick up the shells after he shot at something. I remember helping him when we went down the back to get a rabbit for Sunday dinner.

This was in Surrey B.C. Canada back in the early 60's.

In 1969 we moved to a place that my mother would later refer to as "beyond Hope" but he must have had incredible dreams and visions about what could be done.

As kids we roamed half a mountainside and we were always out playing somewhere and my parents didn't know where I was.  (Later in life I thought we were neglected but now I appreciate the gift of freedom my parents gave me.)

Like Eustace says this instilled the hope and vision that I could do anything because no one was telling me I couldn't. We only had one TV channel- the CBC

Today I want to say "Thank You Daddy!" I know you had big dreams you weren't able to make a reality, largely in part to credit cards, believe it or not., even way back then.

He had chosen to have a gas station and the one he chose was Pacific 66 because they took all cards, but guess what, alot of those people didn't pay there cards...it took a long time for me to figure this one out as I was so young at the time when he passed away and there were so many other factors involved.

My dad was huge dreamer, and so am I. I love him for that. I Thank him for that.

I hope by letting my daughter run around on a beach in Mexico for 2 winters with no TV, I've instilled some of these values and dreams in her. I can see it in her stories, thoughts and actions.

What can we achieve? Not sure Yet! What have we achieved, Miracles!

What Can You Achieve?

I believe we can all create Miracles. We Can get back in touch with nature, we Can lead simpler lives.

What's happening and has happened in the U.S. and Canada in the ecomonics is sad, and hard, and tragic in many situations, especially for the children but as Eustace says "If we can get thru that pain" we can be much stronger people that can achieve our dreams.

We have to achieve our dreams of a simpler sustainable life because there is no other options.

The consumer, materialistic, me, me, me model does NOT work and so we must work towards living in harmony with nature, living in harmony with each other, living in peace.

As Eustace says at the end of his talk "Peace be with you!!"

TEDxAsheville - Eustace Conway - Traditional Lifestyles of the 21st Century

Naturalist Eustace Conway, subject of a biography by "Eat Pray Love" author Elizabeth Gilbert, has lived off the land since he was a teenager. Here he shares insight from a life lived close to a deeper reality most of us hide from.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eustace_Conway

At the age of 12, Conway lived in the woods for a week. At 17 he moved out of his parents' home entirely so that he could live in a tipi in the woods.

He has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail and claims to have set the world record for crossing the United States on horseback from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

However, according to the New York Times and Los Angeles Times of the day, as well as the book, Bud & Me, the record for crossing the North American continent on horseback was actually done in 62 days.

This journey was made by Bud and Temple Abernathy, aged 11 and 7, who rode 3,619 miles (5,824 km) from New York to San Francisco on an equestrian journey, which started in August, 1911.[1][2][3][4]

The weekly radio show "This American Life" reported on Conway's cross country journey in the episode "Adventures in the Simple Life", which aired on September 11, 1998.

The show uses recordings that were taped on a hand-held recorder by Conway and his party.[5]

A 2003 documentary film on Conway's life, Full Circle: A Life Story of Eustace Conway, was directed by Jack Bibbo.

Truth & Happiness

Eustace Conway shares some valuable insight on how to free ourselves from the demands of society in order to pursue our dreams and passions. This is a very powerful Ted Talk presentation. Enjoy the quotes and video… -Rob

All successful men and women are big dreamers. They imagine what their future could be, ideal in every respect, and then they work every day toward their distant vision, that goal or purpose.” -Brian Tracy

Wil Smiths

Willie Smits (born February 22, 1957, in Weurt, Gelderland, the Netherlands) is a trained forester, a microbiologist, conservationist, animal rights activist and social entrepreneur. He has lived in Borneo since 1985 and is an Indonesian citizen.
While working as a forest researcher in East Kalimantan, Indonesia in 1989, Smits encountered a baby orangutan in a cage in a market, and later returned to find it abandoned on a rubbish heap. This was a turning-point in his career: taking the orangutan home, he nurtured it back to health.

He was soon given other orangutans to look after, and the work of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing orangutans into the wild developed into what was to become the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation.

For over twenty years Smits has worked for the survival of this threatened species of ape, during which time his work has also broadened out into the related areas of generating sustainable farming, reforestation and remote monitoring of forests.

He travels widely, raising awareness of the issues surrounding deforestation in Borneo and the plight of the orangutan, also showing how it has been possible on a relatively small scale to reverse the great damage that is being done to the orangutan and its environment.

He became a senior advisor to the Ministry of Forests in Indonesia and has been knighted in the Netherlands.

Rather than looking at our production systems as one way and linear, we can redesign them to be cyclical, as in nature, where there is no such thing as waste and materials are kept in the production cycle.

Zero Waste is emerging as a paradigm shift, a new, comprehensive socio-technical system that addresses our resource use from product design to disposal

AHAHS lunch program-The Impact of Healthy Food on Kids

Barbara Reed Stitt, author of Food and Behavior, A Natural Connection had learned about the profound effects of food in the unlikely position of probation officer. The first thing she did with anyone who came under her care was to change their diet. Time and time again their lives turned around.

Appleton Central Alternative Charter High School (ACA) opened its doors in February of 1996 to give individualized attention to students struggling in the conventional school settings. Despite this close attention, students behavioral problems continued to be extremely problematic.

Barbara Stitt and her husband Paul, a biochemist, approached their local school (ACA) with an offer that was as unusual as it was generous. Take out the vending machines, take out the processed foods, and feed the students fresh, whole, nutritious food and watch their behavior improve. And the Stitts will pay the bill. In fact, since the Stitts owned Natural Ovens, a whole foods bakery, their company would send the school plenty of its own healthy fare AND place one of their own cooks on site at the school's kitchen.

In 1997, ACA teamed up with Natural Ovens Bakery to offer the students a free, nutritious breakfast. The following year (the 1998-99 school year) Natural Ovens sponsored the installation of a full kitchen and dining service (offering both breakfast and lunch).

Appleton Central Alternative High School is, well, an "alternative school"; a place where problem students end up. Greg Bretthauer, the dean of students, was offered the job prior to the program and found the students "rude, obnoxious, and ill-mannered." The school had so many problems with discipline and weapons violations that a police officer was recruited to be on the staff.

The new program had an instantaneous effect. In the state of Wisconsin, each school is required to file a report each year detailing the number of students who have dropped out, been expelled, committed suicide, or got caught using drugs or carrying weapons. Since the start of the program, the numbers at ACAHS have been the same each year, zero! This would be a stat that any public or private school would be proud of. For an alternative school, it's nothing short of astonishing.

Appleton Central Alternative High School serves both a nutritious breakfast and lunch. There are no vending machines within the school and no carry-in food and/or beverages are allowed. In addition, ACAHS offers bottled water and encourages students to carry water bottles. Ninety-five per cent (95%) of Central students participate in the nutrition program.
