⚽π₯ FIFA, Airbnb, and Vancouver’s Cruel Reality
Vancouver is at it again.
The powers-that-be want to roll out the red carpet for FIFA. They want to loosen short-term rental rules so privileged homeowners can rake in profits from Airbnb and Vrbo while the city drowns in inequality, despair, and loss.
π The Human Cost We Keep Ignoring
- Over 18,000 people have died from toxic drugs in British Columbia since 2016.
- Many of them were unhoused or living in precarious, unsafe conditions.
- More than 5,000 people in Vancouver are homeless.
- Over 10,000 condos sit empty.
- Countless more live in the shadows — unhoused, unloved, unseen.
Where is the compassion? Where is the urgency? Where is the humanity?
π¨ Short-Term Rentals for Tourists, Short-Term Thinking for Everyone
Instead of real solutions, we get this garbage: rich property owners whining about $1,060 licensing fees so they can make even more money from people who aren’t even from here. Airbnb brags about “hosting tens of thousands of visitors” while our neighbors die in alleys, shelters, and tents.
This is Olympics 2.0: displace the poor, erase the inconvenient, and funnel wealth toward the already wealthy. Back then, people were swept off the streets to make the city “look good.” Now, the same playbook is back — dress up Vancouver for the global stage, while everyday residents pay the real price.
π Let’s Be Brutally Clear
- That Airbnb money won’t feed the hungry.
- It won’t house the homeless.
- It won’t revive the 18,000 who are gone.
It will line the pockets of those who already have too much.
π What Vancouver Actually Needs
The city doesn’t need FIFA’s circus. Vancouver doesn’t need more short-term rentals. What we need is housing, dignity, and care. What we need is the courage to say NO to this endless cycle of exploitation disguised as “opportunity.”
Because every time we prioritize tourists over residents, we choose profit over people. And every time we do that, more lives are lost.
π The question is: how many more deaths will it take before Vancouver finally chooses humanity over spectacle?
π£ Call to Action
- Tell City Hall: no temporary loosening of STR rules for FIFA.
- Demand enforcement on empty homes and true pathways to permanent housing.
- Support harm reduction, safe supply, and housing-first programs now — not after the party ends.
