evan adams — much more than an actor

evan adams — much more than an actor

I recently rewatched Smoke Signals (1998), and it reminded me just how much I loved this film. Evan Adams was wonderful as Thomas Builds-the-Fire, one of those characters who stays with you long after the movie ends.

I also loved Reservation Dogs, the wonderful Indigenous comedy-drama series. Evan Adams appeared in the show as Uncle Brownie, another memorable character. I hadn't put the two performances together until recently.

But I was curious about what happened to Evan Adams after Smoke Signals, and discovered that his life and career took an interesting direction.

Evan Adams is a Tla'amin First Nation actor, physician and Indigenous health leader from British Columbia.

Many people will remember him for his acting, but medicine and public health became another important part of his life.

He became a medical doctor and held several important positions in Indigenous health, including Chief Medical Officer of the First Nations Health Authority in BC. He also worked with Indigenous Services Canada and has been involved in Indigenous health education and governance.

I love discovering what happens to actors beyond the screen, particularly when their lives take such interesting paths.

From Thomas Builds-the-Fire in Smoke Signals to Uncle Brownie in Reservation Dogs, Evan Adams has given us some wonderful characters.

If you haven't watched either, I'd recommend both.

Sometimes revisiting an old favourite leads you to discover something new.

Have you seen Smoke Signals or Reservation Dogs?
