From Canada to Alaska — Standing with Our Northern Relatives

πŸŒŽπŸ’” From Canada to Alaska — Standing with Our Northern Relatives πŸ’”πŸŒŽ

Today, on Indigenous Peoples’ Day in the U.S., we’re watching heartbreaking scenes from Western Alaska, where the remnants of Typhoon Halong have brought hurricane-force winds, massive flooding, and homes swept away in Indigenous communities like Kwigillingok and Kipnuk.

πŸ’§ Entire homes have been lifted off their foundations and carried away — some with people still inside. Dozens have been rescued, but many are displaced, and some remain missing.

And this isn’t “just a storm.”
This is climate injustice.

Generations ago, these communities were colonially relocated to low-lying, flood-prone lands — areas now suffering the worst impacts of the warming Arctic, which is heating up three times faster than the rest of the planet.

Now, as the planet burns and the seas rise, Indigenous peoples are again forced to pay the price for systems built on exploitation and denial.

πŸ’” What’s happening in Alaska today is not a coincidence — it’s a direct result of colonial displacement, environmental neglect, and climate breakdown.

πŸ™ The Alaska Native Heritage Center is organizing a fundraiser on November 1 in Anchorage to support recovery and rebuilding efforts.

As people in Canada, we share this responsibility — and this history. The same colonial systems that uprooted Indigenous nations here also forced our relatives in Alaska into harm’s way.

Let’s speak up, amplify their voices, and demand climate action that’s rooted in Indigenous sovereignty and justice — not more empty words.
