Heartfelt Condolence to the Filipino Canadian Community After the Lupa Tragedy

 It is with a heavy heart that I offer my deepest condolences to the Filipino Canadian community and to all those affected by the tragic event at the Lupa celebration.

The Lupa celebration was meant to be a joyous occasion, a time for the community to come together and honor Filipino heritage, culture, and traditions. With over 100,000 visitors attending that day, it was a day filled with music, food, dance, and laughter — a true reflection of the warmth, strength, and unity that define the Filipino Canadian community. It’s heartbreaking that something so devastating has overshadowed what should have been a beautiful celebration.

Having had the privilege to know and work with many wonderful Filipinos, this tragedy feels even more personal. The neighborhood, where my grandparents once lived on 51st and Ross, holds a deep place in my heart. While the area has changed over the years, the spirit of togetherness has always remained. To see such loss in a place that holds so much history is profoundly painful.

We mourn with you, stand with you, and send love, strength, and prayers to all those impacted. May the community find healing, and may we honor those we have lost with love and respect.

 An Open Letter to Newcomers in Canada

To those who have recently arrived,

Welcome.

I know this country can be a difficult place. I’ve worked beside you. I’ve seen the struggles firsthand—long hours, hard labour, unfair wages, and employers who take advantage. I know what it’s like to start at the bottom, to be rejected, to feel like you don’t belong.

But today, I need to speak honestly.

I was born and raised here. I am Indigenous but also have European ancestry, which means my roots on this land go back forever. The whole idea of “Canadian identity” is complicated for me, and I know it can be confusing for many people who come here, too.

Canada is changing, and not always for the better. The cost of living is out of control, housing is impossible, and many of us—especially Indigenous people and long-time residents—are struggling just as much as you. I can’t even find a job or a home in the city I grew up in.

And yet, I see something that worries me deeply.

Racism, discrimination, and unethical practices are spreading—sometimes from the very people who once faced discrimination themselves.

We Need Accountability

Canada is meant to be a place of fairness, equality, and respect. But that only works if everyone upholds those values. We cannot build a better future if:

Some businesses only hire their own people and exclude others.

Workers exploit or mistreat employees from different backgrounds.

Security guards abuse their power and mistreat vulnerable people.

People look the other way when Indigenous communities—who have been here since time immemorial—are ignored, disrespected, or displaced once again.

I know it’s hard to speak out against injustice, especially when you’re just trying to survive. But survival cannot come at the cost of ethics, fairness, and dignity.

What Can You Do?

1. Be Accountable for Your Actions – If you see discrimination, call it out. If your workplace is unfair, don’t participate in the cycle.

2. Have Ethics – No job, no amount of money, is worth losing your integrity.

3. Talk to Your Family – If they hold prejudices, challenge them. Canada is not a country built on caste systems or divisions—it’s meant to be different.

4. Respect Indigenous Peoples – This land is our home first. Learn our history, respect our rights, and support Indigenous businesses and communities.

5. Understand That Everyone is Struggling – Many of us who have been here our whole lives are also suffering. The system is failing all of us—let’s not make it worse by turning against one another.

Many newcomers I’ve met love Canada and want to make it a better place. But others don’t like it here, feel frustrated, and are only here temporarily. If that’s the case, please don’t contribute to making things worse for the people who will always be here.

A Final Thought

I am not your enemy. I have worked beside you, lived alongside you, and I know the hardships you face. But I also know that Canada’s future depends on all of us—newcomers and long-time residents alike—choosing fairness, respect, and accountability.

If we don’t, then the struggles we face today will only get worse.

Today I feel confused, I am supposed to go to something very special, Moms against KinderMorgan but I am nervous about the weather. I have been working on this blog post all morning. Today is supposed to be a very special day in that there is going to be a cosmic shift. What will happen today I don't know but I feel something, I think my kid is feeling it too, normally she's not really into going to these things but today when I mentioned whether we should just stay home...she questioned me...I think we all feel like this...the truth is sometimes so ugly or so hidden we don't want to see it.

So I send love and light out into the world and pray that this big beautiful moon will push us forward into a more socially and environmentally just world.

This mornings blogpost started when I watched this...and played out as you see it. I hope the message is clear.

So I was at the pool yesterday and I met 2 lovely young ladies and one was a producer and filmmaker and the other was had a writing background, and she told me she was involved in Peace It Together. I don't remember all the details as it was just a casual afternoon conversation. I remember the one girl was from Israel and the other had be recently in Dubai, but I'm not sure where she came from orignally, possibly Kuwait, I think I heard.

They were very sweet loving girls, I knew this from there generousity and the kindness they showed both me and my daughter. We had a really nice little encounter. I was very interested in them and told them I would google the program they talked about and here it is http://www.peaceittogether.com

I love the internet for the power it has of bringing us together. I may never see those girls again, or on the otherhand somehow by visiting the website and watching these films we may connect thru Facebook or Twitter. That part is pretty amazing because it was not so long ago ...it would have just been a conversation...no real follow up until we possibly met up again, but who knows what the chances of that are ..slim..

So I just have to write a bit more about the Airport and the Live at the YVR Contest  

The airport is so emotional for me, I always cry. Not sobbing crying, but that incredible emotional moment where tears well up and you feel like you'll burst if a few don't spill out. It's an emotional overload.

It's the place you say good-bye or hello again :). Everytime I leave to go on a big trip, I'm so full of emotion and excitement it happens. And everytime I come home...it happens. As we stand around the luggage carousel, you get that ahhhh, Wow! I'm home. I guess because we've been on some pretty big journeys and those are just natural emotions you can not suppress, even if you wanted to.

I mean who wants to start crying when there are tons of people standing around, but you can't help it.
So what an exciting contest. I think it would be a totally awesome experience.

You will be provided with hotel accommodation, a camera and editing equipment and have access to the people, places and behind-the-scenes spaces most have never seen. Until now. 

YVR is one of Vancouver and British Columbia's most important assets. Thousands of jobs. Millions of visitors. Billions in economic impact. Your assignment will be to explore the countless stories that come from the airport. You will film the interviews and package the videos to air on the Live@YVR online channel. 

You’re the on-the-ground correspondent. You’re the producer, director, reporter, editor and post-production supervisor. We want you to show us the community that works here, plays here and does business here. Who says hello and goodbye here. The stories at YVR are endless. Anthem TONIGHT!

Georgia St. at Hamilton St. Vancouver, BC, Canada, Vancouver, BC V6B 4A2

 

On Weds June 22nd at 8:00 PM we will meet at the corner of Georgia and Hamilton to sing Canada's Anthem and share the true voice of Vancouver.

This is a grassroots initiative, we invite anyone with love for Vancouver in their heart that wants to share a positive experience with a group of like minded people in the wake of the destruction last Weds night.
 

Rally point at the Canadian Flagpole on Hamilton St, just of Georgia St, in front of the CBC. Together we'll walk up Georgia to the Canadian Flag Pole in Library Square.


Vancouver, we get by with a little help from our friends!

Vancouver Spirit Rally was put together by 4 people who had the same goal and vision - to rebuild the spirit of our city, and give thanks to those who stepped up and stepped in.

Taking place Saturday, June 25th - the time is 3:30 to 4:15 for stage presentations and is taking place at the TD International Jazz Festival - the stage is located in Gastown at Water St. and Carrall St. It is a short walk from Canada Line, Seabus and Skytrain.

Canadians have remarkable stories to tell. And for the past 75 years, the CBC has enabled us to share those stories with each other.

This year, we celebrate this rich heritage with 1 Day, a special CBC/Radio Canada documentary and online project that invites all Canadians to help create a unique 24 hour portrait of Canada, from midnight to 11:59, coast to coast.


The two hour documentary, to be filmed on April 30th, 2011, is a joint project – between us and you.

For 24 hours, our crews will span the country. We'll follow some of Canada’s most fascinating figures as their day unfolds – from emergency physicians to cops, cultural icons to sports stars.

But 1 Day will also draw on videos and photos sent in by Canadians who seize this unique opportunity to provide a glimpse into their lives, their families, their communities.
