Remembrance Day 2025 🌺

 ðŸŒº Remembrance Day 2025 🌺

by Tina Winterlik (Zipolita)

Today, I remember — not just the soldiers of long ago,

but all those still caught in wars of power and despair.

From Gaza to Ukraine,

from the battlefields of the past

to the streets of Vancouver

where fentanyl and poverty steal lives quietly —

we are still losing too many.

My Great Uncle Jimmy fought in World War I.

He came home to a Canada that stripped him of his rights

because he was Indigenous.

He served a country that did not yet see him as equal.

Only through the archives did I find his story —

a ghost of courage hidden between yellowed pages.

My mother once told me

how during the blackouts in Vancouver,

they’d cover the windows

so no light would give away their home.

Now we cover our hearts,

hoping not to see too much pain,

too much hate,

too much fear.

But today, I choose not to cover my light.

I wear my poppy for peace —

for love that outlasts war,

for art that can lift the broken,

for the dream that someday

no one will need to remember war again.

Let remembrance be a call to compassion,

not vengeance.

Let it remind us to build bridges,

not borders.

And let every artist, mother, teacher,

and dreamer

be a soldier of peace.

🕯️ Lest we forget. 🕊️
