✌️ Calling for Peace: Then and Now
By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita
In the spring of 1981, just a year after I graduated high school, I joined thousands of others in Peace Park in Vancouver. We gathered under the banners of “No Nukes”, full of youthful energy, fear for the future, and a shared hope that our voices mattered.
We marched across the Burrard Bridge, down to English Bay and Sunset Beach, chanting, singing, and standing together against the threat of nuclear war. It was one of my first real experiences with collective action, and I’ve never forgotten the feeling.
Now, over 40 years later, the world again feels like it's teetering on a dangerous edge.
💣 From Natanz to Now: The Urgency Returns
This week, the world watched in shock as Israel launched airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure, hitting the Natanz uranium enrichment site. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned of catastrophic consequences if nuclear facilities are targeted—reminding us just how thin the line is between safety and disaster.
This is not just about two countries. It’s about all of us. Fukushima taught us that radiation doesn’t respect borders. War, fear, and fallout ripple far beyond headlines.
🕊️ So I’m Asking...
Would you like to join me for a Peace March and Picnic in Peace Park again?
Let’s gather in peace, just like we did back in 1981—only this time it can be smaller, more intimate, but just as meaningful.
Let’s walk, reflect, create art, share food, and remind ourselves (and the world) that there are people who still care, still resist, and still dream of peace.
📍 Proposed Details (To Be Confirmed)
- Location: Peace Park, Vancouver
- Date: [TBA– maybe next Saturday or Sunday?]
- Time: Noon – short walk + picnic + optional sign-making or storytelling
- What to Bring: A blanket, snack, water, peaceful sign, art supplies, music, and open hearts 💛
✍️ Add Your Voice
Were you at the 1981 march too? Or maybe another anti-nuke protest in Vancouver?
Let’s collect and share those stories.
Leave a comment, message me, or share your own photo/memory/post. Let's reconnect the past to the present—because the need for peace has never gone away.
🌸 Love is resistance.
