10th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples

10th Anniversary of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples: Canada needs a legislative framework to fulfill the promise of this vital human rights instrument

The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples provides a crucial framework to achieve reconciliation. Such a human rights-‐based approach is essential to address the racism and discrimination that has caused such profound harm to Indigenous peoples in Canada and around the world. Violations include uprooting Indigenous peoples from their territories and resources, failure to honour Treaties, tearing Indigenous children from their families, and making Indigenous women, girls and two-‐ spirited people the targets of unimaginable violence.

The adoption of the UN Declaration ten years ago today – on September 13, 2007 – was a crucial victory in the evolution of international human rights law. This historic achievement was possible because Indigenous peoples persisted for more than two decades in advancing a strong and powerful vision of self-‐determination, decolonization and non-‐discrimination.

The adoption of the Declaration was also made possible because, by the end of this process, influential states including Canada had finally come to accept the necessity and urgency of a new relationship with Indigenous peoples.

The UN General Assembly has unanimously reaffirmed the Declaration on three separate occasions, calling for full implementation at national and international levels.

Fulfilling this commitment requires meaningful and lasting changes to eliminate discriminatory laws, policies and practices and to ensure Indigenous peoples make their own decisions about their lives and futures.

Yet, a decade after the adoption of the Declaration, Canada still lacks concrete and effective mechanisms to uphold its provisions. This is despite many positive statements from the current government committing to fully implement the Declaration.
Last month, the United Nations’ top anti-‐racism body, the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, strongly supported Indigenous peoples in urging
Canada to adopt a legislative framework and national action plan to implement the UN Declaration.
A private members bill expected to come before the House of Commons this fall for second reading – Bill C-‐262 introduced by MP Romeo Saganash – contains elements of such a framework. This includes: repudiation of colonialism and doctrines of superiority; affirmation that the standards set out in the UN Declaration have application in Canadian law; and review and reform of federal legislation to ensure consistency with the minimum standards set out in the UN Declaration. In addition, the Bill requires that a national action plan be developed in partnership with Indigenous peoples.

By approaching implementation of the Declaration through a legislative framework, there is greater assurance that crucial progress made will not be undone by a future government. Our organizations and Nations call on the federal government to embrace and build on the key elements of implementation already set out in Bill C-‐262.

We appreciate that full implementation of the Declaration requires long-‐term commitment and collaboration. As the Truth and Reconciliation Commission repeatedly reminded us, “reconciliation is going to take hard work.”

This is the time to act. Public responses to the TRC’s Calls to Action demonstrate a profound desire among Canadians to build a just relationship between Indigenous peoples and non-‐Indigenous Canadians. As the TRC itself stated, the Declaration provides the framework for doing so. However, putting this framework into place requires more than fine words. It requires concrete, effective action.

Using Art to Support the #TinyHouseWarriors

No Man Camps!! NO consent!
http://www.honorearth.org/man_camps_fact_sheet

“In 2012, the tribal police department reported more murders, fatal accidents, sexual assaults, domestic disputes, drug busts, gun threats, and human trafficking cases than in any year before. The surrounding counties offer similar reports. But there is one essential difference between Fort Berthold and the rest of North Dakota: The reservation’s population has more than doubled with an influx of non-Indian oil workers—over whom the tribe has little legal control.”

Cried watching this, tears of joy, admiration, sadness, hope.
This is so powerful. Please watch and SUPPORT the https://www.facebook.com/tinyhousewarriors/

This. This is what they are working to protect the world from. http://globalnews.ca/news/3736420/hurricane-irma-st-martin-devastation/

Is obvious right? We NEED everyone to support this project.

Please help!

I am making cedar medallions/pendants to sell and partial proceeds will go to help support the Tiny House Warriors. I was calling them pendants but I think medallions is better because these women are heros. Kanahus is my hero. I have lots of beautiful women warrior heroes and I hope to do a video or film about them soon.

Anyways I got an email asking me to send $5 and well I had been planning to make these anyways and I thought hey, let's make this more powerful by supporting something that I truly believe in.

Every little bit helps. If you want, even just to send the $5 to the Tiny House Warriors ...
$5 x 1000 = $5000 and that builds another Tiny house.

Just made the first #WomenAreSacredMedallion yesterday.
Stay Tuned for details!

I have been talking about Tiny houses for years. We are going to be homeless..actual homeless at the end of the month. We have been relative homeless (it's where you live somewhere your not really wanted but have no where else to go) for years. Many many people live this way, (especially women, especially single moms) with family, friends, on couches, in precarious, often abusive, oppressing situations. It's not suppose to be this way.

We are going to go to Mexico for the winter and live in a room ...basically camping in a room for the winter and when we come home well I am praying things will be better and we can find a new home, an actual home, maybe even be blessed with our own tinyhouse home. Where will live I haven't a clue but I know we can't live here anymore, how about you? https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2017/05/homeless-children-are-mad-at-her.html

https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2017/09/how-to-end-fentanyl-crisis.html

How is your living situation? Are you realizing just how warped out the world has become. We need to take care of Mother Earth. Building pipelines through pristine lands is NOT the way. Poisoning the land with mining and so called "accidental disasters " like Mt. Polley(where no one/ no corporation is charged) is going to me the end of us. It is the destruction of our future and our children's children's future.

No charges will be laid over Mount Polley dam failure under B.C. law

THIS WHY YOU NEED TO SUPPORT THE #TINYHOUSEWARRIORS!
They are doing this for everyone!! For the future of the world.
The pipeline will only make the Tar Sands grow. We have seen the climate change disasters this last week with Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Harvey.

"We, the Secwepemc, have never ceded, surrendered, or given up our sovereign title and rights over the land, waters, and resources within Secwepemcul'ecw," tribe leaders said in a statement, adding that they "have never provided and will never provide our collective consent to the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Project. In fact, we hereby explicitly and irrevocably refuse its passage through our territory." https://www.commondreams.org/news/2017/09/08/inspired-standing-rock-first-nations-tiny-house-warriors-protest-pipeline-project

KINDER MORGAN, WE SAY NO! March & Rally 2017
https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2017/09/kinder-morgan-we-say-no-march-rally-2017.html

This. I had a vision way back in the early 90's and in the 2013 I made this video. But I have never really liked it because when I made the animation, I didn't it do it true to the vision. In the vision it was an indigenous child with brown skin, not white like I did this video. I want to remake it. The Tinyhouse Warriors.. they are the future, I may not survive, my child or your child may not but I pray they do and I know they will because they have the will and determine and they have the knowledge. They have elders to teach them and they have land. Let's help them in any way we possibly can. Help them protect the MOTHER. Do it for our children's children in hope for a better future. They are the true changerz. Sending out love and light to them all and holding my hands up to them.

KINDER MORGAN, WE SAY NO! March & Rally 2017

I am so tired. Tired we have to keep having RALLIES AND MARCHES to get climate justice and social justice. It's a lot for me to film these events. My back gets sore, it's hard to hold the camera really still during the speeches, the walk is long and I often have to run to catch up to certain parts but it is critical that these events are recorded and documented and SHARED WIDELY!!! Share this around the world, have a conversation with someone.

WE MUST STAND TOGETHER. WE ARE ONE!!

I asked my friend to watch the news and tell me if he saw me..ha!   there was nothing even on the news about it, from what he saw. Maybe a different station but it won't surprise me.

It's called oppression. Our voices are being oppressed. Just as the colonialist banned the potlatches and arrested any gatherings of more than 3 First Nations peoples, so are the major news networks, politicians and corporations trying to oppress and ignore the masses.

We must preserve and I am so PROUD of ALL of you for coming out yesterday.
I honor you! I hold my hands up to all of you. All my relations!

It was raining, people could have blown it off but they didn't. THANK YOU.

SPECIAL SHOUT OUT to EAGLE EYES!!

He did an AWESOME job of MC'ing the event and I was thrilled and so blessed that Shane Point -Shane Point (Ti' te-in), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm  Elder‎ of Musqueam Nation was there and sang/chanted for us. I still get shivers, it's very POWERFUL and I don't know if everyone realized how sacred and special that was and he was so kind to share his wisdom with us. It's too bad the mic was to quiet and well I think that he would have said more but I am happy happy happy he was there. His message was powerful. I hope you listened.

Chief Bobby Joe and Bob Chamberlin

And Chief Bobby Joe -http://reconciliationcanada.ca/about/team/chief-dr-robert-joseph/  was there. After Chief Bob Chamberlin spoke they came down the stairs and stood right beside me. Bob's sister from Musgmagw Dzawada’enuwx Nation http://www.mdtc.ca/cleansing-our-waters  was there too.  I was in awe! But I got all shy (that always happens and I bug myself after for not speaking up more...) but I don't like to intrude on people. I just told him I had seen all his videos. I wanted to hug him and say how much I admired everything he had done.

I get teary thinking about everything right now. Just getting a rush of emotion from everything ...it was truly a powerful event yesterday.

Big shout out too to MARTA I believe her name is, I don't know her last name but her brother told me she had made all these sea life & animal signs.. or helped but what ever...HOW BEAUTIFUL! AND this is ART IN ACTION! Using art to raise our voices. I loved them so much. Thank you!

Shout outs to all the women who spoke up!!
Kanahus Manuel, grassroots community organizer from the Secwepemc Nation, founder of the Tiny House Warriors

Kanahus spoke by phone and that was an honor to her about her Tinyhouse Warriors!! https://www.facebook.com/tinyhousewarriors/
https://www.secwepemculecw.org/tiny-house-warriors

So important the women speak and be heard! And to all the drummers! THANK YOU!

Well this is it. Soon,  praying and projecting that all goes to plan, we will be heading to Mexico for the winter to reunite with family and friend we have not seen in 5 years..the housing is just unaffordable here and my friend has some health issues so we can't share with him anymore.

So this is it for documenting events for a while..EXCEPT I am going to do my best to be at the RECONCILIATION WALK on SEPT 24 2017 http://reconciliationcanada.ca/walk-for-reconciliation-2017/  and please everyone come out for that.

Let's show we are serious about reconciliation and let's make our voices loud and proud that we want big changes and we want to protect our Mother!!

So here's video part one, it's basically the beginning and end of the RALLY and then part 2 is the March and then there's all the photos.

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY!! HAVE A CONVERSATION!

We don't want our kids to puke brown goo, like in Kalmazoo, and it's no f'king joke!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jGcJ64q9BaM

And we need to Save the Wild Salmon or it's over for us.

It was so great to see Shane Point again. So blessed he took time out of his very very busy schedule to come down and share his wisdom with us. I remember the first day at Langara. He told us he hated to be called elder, so I always referred to him as wise one.  The Energy was Bigger than Us!

Fish Farms Must End Before Ecological Collapse

Let this be the LAST rally to defend and protect our salmon!! Stand Up for the Salmon, your life and every living being on the West Coast depends on them and this is not just a First Nations issue, or a BC issue, it is an INTERNATIONAL issue!!

SAVE OUR WILD SALMON!
END FISH FARMS NOW!!

Some people think farming is okay but I have worked in farming and mass production, it is not. They call for the fish farms to be taken from our waters and put on land but I disagree. No more fish farms, we must go back to the way it was...150, 200 years + , either we do it ourselves or Mother Earth will do it for us. May the ancestors watch over us and may we make them proud. Sending love and light to all as we undertake this monumental task.

"Dozens of Indigenous leaders and protestors rallied outside the Vancouver Convention Centre today urging the province to dismantle salmon farms along the B.C. coast.

The calls came as environmentalists and members of the Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw and the Kwikwasutinuxw Haxwamis First Nations occupy two Marine Harvest Canada salmon farms in their territorial waters off the north end of Vancouver Island.

They say the salmon farms pose a threat to wild fish populations.

Chief Willie Moon was among the many leaders who spoke at the rally. He says frustrations have mounted as repeated calls directed at the provincial and federal governments to revoke fish farm licensing in traditional Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw territory have gone unheard."

This was last year!! Please EVERYONE COME OUT!! WE NEED YOU!!

Listen, please listen...

The village of Snauq - is now known as Kitsilano...

Do it for your Children's Children!!

YOUR ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED!!

For the wild salmon, for the orcas, for the bears and other wildlife that depend on wild salmon populations, for indigenous rights, for our beautiful coast, for your children and all future generations! This Thursday, we need your voice.

The BC NDP Cabinet is meeting with First Nation leaders September 6&7 at the Vancouver Convention Center WEST. Please join us for a rally on Thursday from 11am - 1pm, to tell the BC government not to renew the salmon farm licenses of occupation in the Broughton Archipelago.

The Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance will rally in solidarity with Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, Namgis and Mamalilikulla who are occupying two fish farms to assert their Indigenous rights and and responsibilities to care for their unceded territory and fishing resources. We are calling on the BC Cabinet to exercise provincial jurisdiction to revoke licences of occupation given to fish farms in their territories, thus putting an end to 30 years of fish farm violations of their Indigenous rights, and result in a very meaningful act of reconciliation.

It's time for ALL BC citizens to take a stance. We have seen the footage and the evidence of disease within these fish farms. We have seen the endangered herring and wild salmon trapped in the pens. We have seen the deformations, the open wounds, the sea lice, the emaciated fish, the clouds of waste. We have seen the entanglements of whales and other sea life. Thanks to Alexandra Morton, First Nation leaders, the crew of the R/V Martin Sheen, and so many others, we know what is going on out there. Please show up to show your support for the NDP government to revoke these fish farm licenses of occupation. And if you don't live close enough to attend, please phone and email John Horgan's office every day until we are satisfied with their course of action. 1-250-837-1715; premier@gov.bc.ca

Whales can not carrying their young full term because they don't have enough wild salmon to eat! Salmon are a keystone species

"I am salmon

It is possible through scientific techniques to measure the amount of nutrients originating from dead salmon that are sequestered into trees, bugs, our bodies or even a glass of wine. Salmon hatched as far south as the wine-growing watersheds of California head out to the open ocean, migrate and feed in the North Pacific and return back to California to spawn, die, and decompose. Up to a quarter of the nitrogen found in the leaves of grape plants in these watersheds originate from the carcasses of salmon. There are thousands of individual streams in the Canada's Pacific North Coast that support various species of salmon. These salmon provide a significant role transferring nutrients from marine to terrestrial ecosystems, and supporting species from grizzly bears to water shrews. And the millions of juvenile salmon that feed along Canada's coastal waters are themselves an essential food source for many other species. " http://www.davidsuzuki.org/issues/oceans/science/marine-planning-and-conservation/salmon/

Every thing that depends on them will die if the salmon die. Now is the time to stand up and protect our sacred wild salmon. Link arms with the The Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance, who will rally in solidarity with Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, Namgis and Mamalilikulla who are occupying two fish farms to assert their Indigenous rights and responsibilities to care for their unceded territory and fishing resources

While I personally feel that all mass farming and production is wrong, some feel (David Suzuki & Union of BC Indian Chiefs) that at this time, it's time to ground the Open Net-Pen Fish Farms is the best way to move forward at this time.  See links below.
