Congratulations Ashley- Mrs Universe 2015

Wow, she is an amazing woman.. She's been through a lot, sexual and physical abuse and poverty, death of loved one, those things have created this powerful force to be reckoned with.

From her Facebook page:
Ashley Callingbull is a 25 year old Cree First Nations woman from the Enoch Cree Nation in the province of Alberta. She graduated from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology in the Television Program. She is very devoted to her culture and people, and takes pride in her Native Cree heritage, and has shown this through her volunteer work with community elders and aboriginal youth. By the time Ashley reached 10 years old; she had consecutively won all Enoch’s princess crowns. She is a professionally trained dancer in tap, ballet, jazz, pointe and performed in the Nutcracker.  Read more here https://www.facebook.com/pages/Ashley-Callingbull/175682812486772?sk=info&tab=page_info

Watch the interview and hear her story. She is wonderful inspiration and role model. I hope her influences will help bring a lot attention to the murdered and missing women. She will be a powerful voice that really needed.

She has really overcame so many obstacles, as you will read further down the ignorance and racism she has faced and that many First Nations face.

A 25-year-old from Alberta's Enoch Cree Nation has become the first First Nations woman and the first Canadian to win the Mrs. Universe pageant.
Ashley Callingbull, whose married name is Burnham, was crowned the winner in Belarus Saturday night.  "I'm really overwhelmed right now," Callingbull said.

She gained attention after becoming the only First Nations contestant in the 2010 Miss Canada pageant. She said that while she got a lot of support, she was also the target of racist comments.
"A newspaper (wrote), 'What is she going to do for her talent, write a welfare cheque with her toes?'" Callingbull said. "Just horrible, horrible things."

My MRS Universe 2015 winning gown was created by Las Vegas Designer Joey Galon, Atelier !! He's amazingly talented and has created pageant gowns for many pageant contestants. Check out his work!
RS Universe 2015 Ashley Burnham will be featured on ET Canada tonight at 7:30pm Eastern Time!

“It’s so crucial that we vote a new prime minister in, because we need a new prime minister,” said Burnham, from Enoch Cree Nation in Alberta. “I believe we need to fight for our rights and we need to vote.”

Burnham, 25, won Mrs. Universe 2015 on Saturday in Minsk, Belarus, becoming the first Canadian and First Nations woman to win the title for married women.
Winning  has catapulted the actress and model into the national and international spotlight.
She is using her voice to raise awareness of issues affecting Canada’s Indigenous people.

In the traditional costume segment of the competition, for example, Burnham wore a jingle dress like the one she often wears at powwows, customized in shiny red, white, and silver colours, with maple leaves sewn onto it. And in the talent competition, Burnham wore a buckskin dress and performed a traditional dance.

"I basically tried to showcase my culture throughout the whole pageant, because in Europe, they don't really see that. They just see whatever is in the mainstream," Burnham said.

Here is the Crowning Moment!!

They are TAKING A STAND FOR ALL CANADIANS!!

Hey Canada, what I want to know is WHY are we letting a Malaysian company come in and wipe out our land, ocean, livelyhoods, culture and our fish!!!

What can we learn from Hurricane Katrina?

UPDATE: I just wanted to add this image.

I watched the film below today. It's 4 parts. Shocking, very very disturbing how the events of this disaster unfolded.

How did it go so wrong and could that happen here? I shudder to think!

I send out love and light and pray so hard for all those poor Hurricane Katrina victims. Those poor poor people. Why? Why did they have to suffer like that?

It is a very sad film but it is very well done and tells the story that I had never heard or known about and I think is very important people hear about it.

I always wanted to visit New Orleans and I am sad I never saw it before. New Orleans is obviously made up of strong, courageous and determined people and I am sure they will endure, but the challenges faced here are understandably too many for most to survive.

AP Photo/U.S. Coast Guard, Petty Officer 2nd Class Kyle Niemi

They will suffer the effects their entire lives and that will affect everyone around them. I hope a lot of lessons were learned by the government and city planning people especially as communities more people move to no cars and would have no way to evacuate should a disaster happen.

As global warming happens and we are warned of the melting polar ice caps and rising sea levels everyone needs to pay close attention and learn to be prepare in case they are faced with similar scenerios. Frightening indeed, no one wants to think about it but these people lived it. What would you do?

WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE: A REQUIEM IN FOUR ACTS is a Spike Lee Film and a 40 Acres & A Mule Filmworks Production.

Directed and produced by Spike Lee; producer and supervising editor, Sam Pollard; cinematography, Cliff Charles; editors, Geta Gandbhir and Nancy Novack; composer, Terence Blanchard; line producer, Butch Robinson. For HBO: supervising producer, Jacqueline Glover; executive producer, Sheila Nevins.

I do suggest you watch but it is not for children, there should be a warning because it shows graphic images. There are powerful messages in this film. Learn from it and share it. Pray for those affected and help in anyway you can.

"The film also looks at a community that has been through hell and back, surviving death, devastation and disease at every turn. Yet, somehow, amidst the ruins, the people of New Orleans are finding new hope and strength as the city rises from the ashes, buoyed by their own resilience and a rich cultural legacy."

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina
Katrina caused severe destruction along the Gulf coast from central Florida to Texas, much of it due to the storm surge. The most significant number of deaths occurred in New Orleans, Louisiana, which flooded as its levee system failed, in many cases hours after the storm had moved inland.[4]

Eventually 80% of the city and large tracts of neighboring parishes became flooded, and the floodwaters lingered for weeks.[4] However, the worst property damage occurred in coastal areas, such as Mississippi beachfront towns; over 90 percent of these were flooded. Boats and casino barges rammed buildings, pushing cars and houses inland; water reached 6–12 miles (10–19 km) from the beach.

Hurricane Katrina also affected Canada-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurricane_Katrina
In Canada, the remnants of Katrina brought rainfall amounts in excess of 3.94 in (100 mm) to many locations between the Niagara Peninsula and the Saint Lawrence River valley.[78] Severe local flooding occurred in Quebec, forcing the evacuations of dozens of homes in some communities as rivers began overflowing their banks and sewage systems were becoming overwhelmed by the influx of precipitation. Inundated and washed out roads, including Route 138 along the north shore of the Saint Lawrence River, Route 172 north of Tadoussac, and Route 385 near Forestville left several communities isolated for at least a week.[79]

Public servant investigated over political 'Harperman' song http://www.edmontonjournal.com/touch/story.html?id=11322649

Tony Turner, a scientist in habitat planning at Environment Canada, was recently sent home on leave with pay while the government investigates the making of Harperman, a music video posted on YouTube in early June that has attracted about 48,000 hits.

Note to Tony: Sending you love and light that someone is going to offer you your dream job. Thanks for this great song. We really need something like this to help unite us all and get our messages out loud and clear and in an artist positive protest. WELL DONE TONY and everyone in the singalong.

Published on Jun 22, 2015
Harperman is a protest song against the Conservative government of Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. We are organizing a cross-Canada singalong of Harperman on September 17, just a month before the expected date of the Canadian federal election. Please contribute, if you can, to helping organize the singalong. We have a funding campaign on Indiegogo at http://igg.me/at/harperman

 http://www.edmontonjournal.com/touch/story.html?id=11322649
Turner has been a public servant for 19 years and is nearing retirement. He most recently was assigned to co-ordinate a project to map priority areas for migratory birds.

But he has also been a stalwart of the local folk music scene since 1994 when he joined Writers’ Bloc, Ottawa’s songwriters collective. He has several CDs, plays regularly across the province and is best known for the song Circle of Song, which will be included in a new anthology of Canadian folk songs. His biography makes no mention of being a public servant.

Lyrics to Harperman

Who controls our parliament?
Harperman, Harperman
 Who squashes all dissent?
Harperman, Harperman
 The Duffy handout incident
No respect for the environment
Harperman,
it’s time for you to go
Who’s the king of secrecy?
Who has slashed the CBC?
No money for PTSD
Accuses good Judge Beverley

CHORUS

Who’s the rogue in prorogue?
Whose party line must be toed?
Won’t buy into climate change
Until it’s sold on the stock exchange
Whose smarmy smile is a thin veneer?
Who preaches the politics of fear?
Ignores the plight of native folks
Missing women, it’s no joke

CHORUS

Who’s dropping payload in Iraq?
Who passed the Unfair Elections Act?
Who’s a two-bit controlling freak
Makes us feel the future’s bleak?
Who muzzles the poor scientist?
Calls troubled people “terrorists”?
Who wants the courts to just say yes?
Suppresses freedom of the press?

CHORUS

Who turns watchdogs into lapdogs?
Gives his friends the best fat cat jobs?
Bigger prisons, “tough on crime”
Gerrymanders election lines
Who’s pulling all the Tory strings?
Who stands to the right of the right wing?
Ignores the cause of everything?
But to ideology will cling
Who reveres Uncle Sam?
Says our future lies in oil sands?
Dirty oil, dirty plans
Dirty tricks, dirty hands

Chorus:
We want you gone (gone, gone)
You and your pawn (pawn, pawns)
No more con (con, cons)
Time to move on (on, on)
Get out of town (town, town )
Don’t want you round (round, round)
Harperman, it’s time for you to go

Ending:
Tag 1

You can drive your omnibus to Kokamo
And take that useless caucus when you go
We’ll scratch you from the long form census poll
Harperman, it’s time for you to go
Tag 2
(parody of O Sinner Man)
Harperman, where ya gonna run to? x3

New Painting at Bean Around the World

Hey everyone, I put up a new painting. They will all only be up until Aug 31/2015 so if you haven't seen them, get down there.

Bean Around the World- Coffee Shop
1945 Cornwall Ave
Vancouver B.C. V6J 138

If you are downtown take the 22 or 2 over the Burrard Bridge and get off first stop at Cypress. Walk one towards Walnut street. It is on the corner of Walnut St and Cornwall Ave. You can check out the painting, grab a coffee and treat and then go for a nice walk on the beach.

I did that with my friend last night but at the beach I stepped barefoot on a wasp in the seaweed, so don't do that. OUCH! Have a GREAT DAY EVERYONE!! :D

Here's my Portfolio Website and more links to my work if you are interested.

I am delighted to share the Solar Sister film that was shown at this year's Clinton Global Initiative. I am so proud of all the Solar Sister Entrepreneurs and their amazing determination, resilience, courage, and entrepreneurial panache! Do you recognize the voice doing the opening narration? Yep!
Posted by Solar Sister on Tuesday, September 30, 2014

Their Mission
Solar Sister supports women and girls in rural Africa by providing access to clean, dependable renewable energy, enabling them to lift themselves, their families and their communities out of poverty.

Energy poverty is a critical component of global poverty. In sub-Saharan households, 75% of homes have no access to network electricity. The indoor air pollution caused by the smoke emitted from burning wood and kerosene for light and cooking is responsible for 1.6 million deaths per year. On average, women spend 25% of their time fetching wood for cooking and heat. Time which could otherwise be spent on more productive tasks.

At the village level, energy poverty means you can’t pump clean water regularly, there’s no communications, no way to have adult literacy classes, and no way to run computers at schools or have connectivity. It places a limit on the activities of an individual and on a community. Education, health and safety and economic opportunity are seriously impacted by lack of reliable, clean, affordable electricity.

It is mostly women in rural villages that bear the burden of energy poverty. They are the ones that walk for miles every day to fetch water for cooking, drinking, cleaning. They are the ones who spend hours collecting wood for cooking. The burden of subsistence falls on the women and girls in a village. They sacrifice education and opportunity to basic survival.

Simply by giving these women and girls access to clean, dependable solar electricity, we can alleviate the burden of energy poverty and change lives.
