IF Only We Had Leaders Like This… In Memory of José “Pepe” Mujica

Yesterday, the world lost one of its most humble and beloved leaders — José “Pepe” Mujica, the former President of Uruguay, passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89.

Mujica was more than a politician. He was a symbol of integrity, resilience, and hope in a world often dominated by power and greed. Known widely as “the world’s poorest president,” Mujica lived what he preached. He chose a simple life in his modest farmhouse on the outskirts of Montevideo, drove a battered old Volkswagen Beetle, and donated nearly 90% of his salary to charities supporting the poor and small entrepreneurs.

But his humility didn’t make him any less powerful. It made him more so.

A former guerrilla fighter with the Tupamaros movement in the 1960s and 70s, Mujica spent nearly 14 years in prison — much of it in solitary confinement. But he didn’t let bitterness consume him. After his release, he entered politics and went on to serve as Uruguay’s president from 2010 to 2015. In that time, Uruguay became a global leader in progressive policy: legalizing same-sex marriage, abortion, and marijuana — always grounded in compassion and common sense.

“Life is a beautiful adventure and a miracle,” he once said. “We are too focused on wealth and not on happiness.”

Can you imagine if our leaders lived this way?

  • What if instead of photo ops, we saw leaders in muddy boots helping communities rebuild?
  • What if their salaries reflected the struggle of the people they serve?
  • What if instead of luxury offices, they sat on park benches listening to their citizens?

Mujica showed us that another way is possible. He didn’t just talk about equity — he embodied it.

His passing is a great loss, but his legacy is a lighthouse for those of us struggling in stormy times. Whether you are an activist, a dreamer, or simply a tired soul longing for change — take heart. His life reminds us that courage, kindness, and humility still matter. They always will.

Rest in power, Pepe.
IF only we had more leaders like you.
