π’ Vancouver Park Board vs. J.K. Rowling: When Fiction Meets Real-World Harm π³️π
The Vancouver Park Board recently issued an apology to the 2SLGBTQ+ community after approving a Harry Potter-themed event.
The board acknowledged that author J.K. Rowling’s public comments about transgender and queer people have caused real harm, and that celebrating her work without reflection can be painful for many.
A motion was passed allowing the event to run for one season only, while committing to more inclusive and mindful programming in the future.
But when the Park Board shared its statement, J.K. Rowling herself took notice — and mocked it online. Many found her reaction dismissive and cruel, especially given that the board’s message was meant to promote healing and awareness.
It’s sad irony: the creator of a world once celebrated for teaching kindness, courage, and acceptance now seems to be fighting against those very values. πͺπ
What do you think — can we still enjoy stories when the storyteller refuses to learn compassion? π
