world homelessness day — october 10
Today, October 10, is World Homeless Day, a day to bring attention to homelessness around the world and the need for safe, affordable housing for everyone.
Today is also the day of a housing march, bringing people together to raise their voices and demand change.
Homelessness is not just about sleeping on the street. It includes people couch-surfing, living in temporary accommodations, staying wherever they can find a place, and those one missed paycheque away from losing their homes.
Behind every statistic is a human being. Someone's mother, father, daughter, son, friend or neighbour. People who deserve dignity, security and a place to call home.
I've been without a permanent home since 2019. I know firsthand that housing insecurity isn't always visible. You can be resourceful, creative and determined, and still struggle to find a place you can afford.
Housing is a basic human need, not a luxury. We cannot keep treating homelessness as though it is an inevitable part of society.
Today's housing march is an opportunity to stand together, be heard and remind decision-makers that people need real solutions, not just promises.
A home should be a human right, not a privilege reserved for those who can afford it.
On World Homeless Day, let's remember those who are struggling, those who are fighting to keep a roof over their heads, and those who have been left behind.
Everyone deserves a safe place to sleep, a door they can close, and the peace of mind that comes with knowing they have a home.
