As part of an EPA study and initiative to combat the urban heat island effect and to improve urban air quality, Mayor Richard M. Daley and the City of Chicago began construction of a 38,800 square foot (total roof area) semi-extensive greenroof in April 2000. It was completed at the end of 2001 at a cost $2.5 million, funded by a settlement with ComEd. Encompassing one square block and twelve stories high, this retrofit application serves as a demonstration project and test greenroof. The project was completed in the summer of 2001 and will monitored for plant survival as well as other environmental features. Chicago City Hall's greenroof saves $5,000 a year on utility bills, according to Michael Berkshire.

The results of the analysis include overall count of vegetated roofs, their total square footage, and the ratio of required to elective vegetated roofs.  The study identified:
  • 509 vegetated roofs within the City of Chicago.
  • 5,564,412 square feet of green roof coverag

Trees are usually not included in roof gardens due to their extreme weight and depth requirements, but the intensive design accommodated two trees that were planted on cantilevered platforms over structural columns. In total, 20 000 plants of more than 150 indigenous species were planted in the 1,885-square-meter roof garden. http://landarchs.com/how-the-chicago-city-hall-green-roof-is-greening-the-concrete-jungle/

What Should Barbie's Green House look like?

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

So the American Institute of Architects created a contest to create Barbie's Dream house. This is pretty cool because my little girl just got some new Barbies, actually 2 new Ken Dolls to go with her many Barbies. This was a good thing as she said all the Barbie's were fighting over the one lone(Malibu) Ken doll, and he was married to Malibu Barbie!  So now there's 3 Ken Dolls, well one is now James, ...  :)

This is so funny, because we actually did  a little fashion shoot with them all last night, and I am making it into a little video, I'll show you later. Until then check this out these houses.

Some are pretty cool. I like the smaller ones, of course, because that's much "greener" and more sustainable.
