No One Is Coming to Save Us

πŸŒ± “No One Is Coming to Save Us — But We Can Save Each Other” 🌱

πŸ“Ί Watch: Peak Moment 153 – Jenny Pell: Additive Abundance & Permaculture
πŸ”— https://youtu.be/cZ7anJHbFhg?si=JRcMQJjIOipDPLlI

In this inspiring episode, Jenny Pell reminds us that sustainability isn’t enough — we need to go beyond it. She calls for an additive way of living: healing the Earth while healing ourselves. We need to reconnect to our "chain of inputs and outputs" — the land, the food, the water, the waste — and truly belong where we live.

Her message is a wake-up call that pairs beautifully with Ron Finley’s powerful movement — Gangsta Gardening. He famously said:

"Growing your own food is like printing your own money."

Both Jenny and Ron are saying the same thing in different voices: We can’t wait for the system to save us.
We have to relearn how to feed ourselves and our neighbours.

🌻 Gardening is revolutionary.
🧠 It’s good for mental health.
πŸ‘ΆπŸ‘΅ It’s for all ages.
🌍 It builds community resilience.
πŸ’š It creates joy, pride, purpose — and most of all, abundance.

In a time when so many people feel isolated, anxious, and unsure how to fight back against the overwhelming weight of climate collapse, poverty, and food insecurity — growing food is a radical act of love.

Whether it's a balcony tomato, a community garden, or transforming a lawn into a food forest, the time is now to dig in.

Let’s get our hands dirty — and grow something real.
Because abundance is the only way forward.

Wow, when you can not use the seed you grow, something is really wrong with the world.

From Youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=33DwBp2QTgg#t=291
The Right To Save Seed is an animated movie which explains when farmers can resow their seed in Europe. With the help of Magnum, Agata, Dali and Mona Lisa -- four varieties of potatoes that really exist -- the movie covers different legal situations with humour and a lot of creativity!

Even though farmers have made their own seed over centuries, they are not able to resow all the seed they buy, or can only resow it if certain conditions are met. Resowing is sometimes prevented by the seed sale contract, sometimes by the contract that ties them to the buyer of their crop, and sometimes by intellectual property rights.

Inspired by Grocery Store Wars, by Free Range Studios, Shabnam Anvar (PhD in Seed Regulation), Mathieu Eisinger (Producer), Jeanne Rouchel (Producer and Designer) and Olivia Zarcate (Legal Infography) used colourful creativity to translate a complex legal situation into a fun story for all. Their goal: help farmers and consumers choose their choice of seed and food knowing what the implications are.

June Stoyer- The Organic View & Bill Turnbill- Beekeeping

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Really Really interesting articles on this site "The Organic View" with June Stoyer. I just loved the blogtalkradio interview with Bill Turnbill.

My child can hold bees. She has since she was about 4. You can see the video below. I dream of the day when we have our home with a huge garden of herbs and bees.

I also dream of creating edible schoolyards and raising bees and the huge opportunity of teaching our children about organic gardening and beekeeping and natural medicines. Check out the info below. I'm sure you will find it enlightening.

What Should Barbie's Green House look like?

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

So the American Institute of Architects created a contest to create Barbie's Dream house. This is pretty cool because my little girl just got some new Barbies, actually 2 new Ken Dolls to go with her many Barbies. This was a good thing as she said all the Barbie's were fighting over the one lone(Malibu) Ken doll, and he was married to Malibu Barbie!  So now there's 3 Ken Dolls, well one is now James, ...  :)

This is so funny, because we actually did  a little fashion shoot with them all last night, and I am making it into a little video, I'll show you later. Until then check this out these houses.

Some are pretty cool. I like the smaller ones, of course, because that's much "greener" and more sustainable.

The Edible Schoolyard

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Hi Everyone, Happy Monday Morning, it's a fairly nice day here in Vancouver B.C.  some blue sky with fluffy white clouds. This week is a really wonderful week, we have Good Friday, Easter and Earth Day.

Angel came up with something last night she said we can call Friday,  "Good Earth Day"  I thought that was very Cool!

So we can Say "Happy Good Earth Day" To everyone on Friday.

So I would like to ask you to do me a big favor and read my  post before this Change the Education System http://goo.gl/s7lnt and watch the video  "RSA Animate - Changing Education Paradigms"

And then read this post as well.

Please all the Canadian Parents, Grandparents, Caregivers, Guardians, Teachers and anyone involved in the Education System out there, consider carefully if the government you are about to elect would even consider implementing such important strategies.

I truly believe "It's time". We need to tell them what we want, and get them to promise to do it.

The experts say we have all the solutions, we just need to apply them "collectively!" What's your point of view?

The Garden

The Edible Schoolyard garden is a thriving acre of land on school grounds that serves as an interactive garden classroom for students at Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California.

In the spring of 1995, an abandoned lot adjacent to the school was designated as the garden site. Landscape architects, chefs, gardeners, and teachers were invited to share their vision of a garden where students would participate in hands-on learning. 12 years later, the acre of land is lush with seasonal vegetables, herbs, vines, berries, flowers, and fruit trees.

King Middle School teachers and the garden staff work together to link garden experiences with students’ science lessons for truly integrated experiential learning.

The garden is carefully planned to grow a wide variety of seasonal produce that favors the Bay Area climate; it shifts and changes from season to season, as we seed, grow, harvest, and rotate crops with new groups of students each year.

Students harvest and prepare produce as part of their garden and kitchen classes. However, produce grown in the garden is not used for school lunch.

Learn more about the impact of this program and its connection to school lunch reform at the Chez Panisse Foundation website.

Earth Bag House

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

One day, I'm going to have house like this. An Earthbag House. Somewhere in the Kootenays with a BIG herb garden and a small apothecary. That's my dream and I'm going to make it happen, What's your dream?  http://www.earthbagbuilding.com

Quoting from "Earthbag Building.com" Building with earthbags (sometimes called sandbags) is both old and new. Sandbags have long been used, particularly by the military, for creating strong, protective barriers, or for flood control. The same reasons that make them useful for these applications carry over to creating housing. Since the walls are so substantial, they resist all kinds of severe weather (or even bullets) and also stand up to natural calamities such as earthquakes and floods. They can be erected simply and quickly with readily available components, for very little money.

Small Change, Growing Kids, & Tides Canada

http://smallchangefund.org/

What We Do

Small Change Fund empowers you to make big change with small change. We provide a place for you to discover, share, connect with, and support amazing grassroots projects in communities across the country – projects that need just a small amount of money to make a real and significant impact in the world.

We make giving simple.
Call it bottom-up investment, grassroots grant-making, place-based funding, micro-philanthropy. Whatever its name, it’s a new way of giving. We use the power of the Internet to engage everyone at their own level to share with others. We open up the giving process so you can have a hand in solving the problems you care about most. You read, you choose, you give. You can give money, you can give time, you can give support. It’s that simple.

We put you in touch.
Did you know that less than 1% percent of Canadian giving goes to grassroots groups and only a fraction of that goes to support environmental and international causes?

Local projects on the ground are often overlooked, especially when they’re needed most – it’s a funny thing, but tough times and complex challenges are just when small, local solutions make the most difference.

As the only Canadian organization of its kind, Small Change Fund puts you in touch with people on the ground, people who are best able to figure out and fix the problems in their communities

This is a video created by Environmental Education Manager, Paul Tucker, from EcoSpark. The video was made as part of a Toronto Digital Storytelling workshop funded by Green Street.

The story was made in response to the question: "Why you do you do what you do?"

The school gardens at Winchester Jr. & Sr. P.S. and Rose Ave. P.S. in the spring and summer of 2010, in east downtown Toronto.

Featuring: spring programs, the after-school program at Riverdale Farm with students from Regent Park, evening garden drop-in with families in the summer and youth green jobs.

See how engaging people in growing food has multiple tangible and intangible benefits!

Our school food garden projects are about kids and their grownups, plants and their people.

Video produced and music composed by Mehrdad Wellington.

Request for Proposals- Sustainable Food Systems

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011
Mar 13/2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Found this on my Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/SustenanceFestival

http://www.mcconnellfoundation.ca/en/granting/sustainable-food-systems

Request for Proposals
Sustainable Food Systems
To strengthen regional food economies in Canada

While the global industrial food system can be credited with providing low cost food to large numbers of consumers, it has serious drawbacks and vulnerabilities. Obesity rates are escalating, and dependence on food banks is growing.

Roughly 30% of all greenhouse gas emissions are generated by food production, processing, and distribution; and major watersheds are being harmed by intensive agriculture.

The current supply of inexpensive imported food is threatened by rising energy costs and climate change-related declines in crop yields.

Canadians increasingly understand that a resilient and sustainable food system must address not only the economic wellbeing of producers and consumers, but also environmental impacts and human health outcomes.

Local, diverse, and ecologically sustainable food initiatives are multiplying across the country, including eco-certification, regionally focussed restaurants and food markets, and healthy supply chain strategies that link informed consumers to local producers.

In order to assist this work, the McConnell Foundation is launching an initiative to strengthen regional food economies in Canada.

We envision a food system that links growers and consumers in supply chains that incorporate shared values around sustainability, health, and resilience. Read More Here http://www.mcconnellfoundation.ca/en/granting/sustainable-food-systems

Examples of projects which this initiative could support include:

-certification programs that support local and sustainable food
-projects that influence institutional procurement policies
-healthy supply chains” that enable intermediaries to link farmers to markets
-dissemination of programs that provide fresh local food for schools
-food “hubs” that link local producers, processors, consumers, and civil society organizations

The deadline for submissions of proposals is April 15, 2011.
