winter safety reminder: please be seen, please be safe

winter safety reminder: please be seen, please be safe

💔 Two heartbreaking reminders of how dangerous our roads can be: a 45-year-old was struck and killed, and a 7-year-old girl was hit by a vehicle. My heart goes out to everyone affected.

As we head into the dark, rainy months, I want to remind everyone who walks, cycles, or travels on foot: PLEASE WEAR BRIGHT COLOURS AND REFLECTIVE GEAR.

🌧️ Make yourself visible this fall and winter!

🟡 Wear bright, fluorescent colours instead of dark clothing.

✨ Add reflective tape to your jacket, backpack, shoes, umbrella, or bag.

🔦 Carry a flashlight or use a light when walking in poorly lit areas.

🚶 Cross at intersections and crosswalks whenever possible. Make eye contact with drivers if you can, but never assume they have seen you.

🚗 Drivers, please slow down! Rain, darkness, glare, and wet roads make it harder to see pedestrians and stop in time. Stay alert, put your phone away, and watch carefully for people crossing, especially children.

We all know that some drivers speed, and others are distracted. We cannot control their behaviour, but we can take steps to make ourselves more visible.

Please remember that wearing dark clothing on a rainy, overcast evening can make you almost invisible to a driver until it is too late.

A few seconds of extra caution could save a life.

Please share this reminder with your family, friends, neighbours, and especially anyone who walks to school or work.

Let's look out for one another. Nobody should lose their life simply trying to get where they need to go.

Be bright. Be visible. Slow down. Get home safely. ❤️
