Okay Men, Listen Up!!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

I'm a big believer in Essential Oils, and I came across this video on the Prostate and thought it would be valuable to share it with all of you.

Young Living's newest essential oil supplement, Prostate Health, is uniquely formulated for men concerned with supporting the male glandular system and maintaining healthy, normal prostate function. With just two vegetable softgels per day, the body is infused with key anti-inflammatory components through pure geranium, fennel, myrtle, lavender, and peppermint essential oils, as well as powerful saw palmetto and organic pumpkin seed oil.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prostate

The prostate (from Greek προστάτης - prostates, literally "one who stands before", "protector", "guardian"[1]) is a compound tubuloalveolar exocrine gland of the male reproductive system in most mammals unless they have it removed at birth.[2][3]
In 2002, female paraurethral glands, or Skene's glands, were officially renamed the female prostate by the Federative International Committee on Anatomical Terminology.[4]
The prostate differs considerably among species anatomically, chemically, and physiologically.

The function of the prostate is to store and secrete a slightly alkaline fluid, milky or white in appearance,[5] that usually constitutes 20-30% of the volume of the semen along with spermatozoa and seminal vesicle fluid. The alkalinity of semen helps neutralize the acidity of the vaginal tract, prolonging the lifespan of sperm. The alkalinization of semen is primarily accomplished through secretion from the seminal vesicles.[6] The prostatic fluid is expelled in the first ejaculate fractions, together with most of the spermatozoa. In comparison with the few spermatozoa expelled together with mainly seminal vesicular fluid, those expelled in prostatic fluid have better motility, longer survival and better protection of the genetic material (DNA).
The prostate also contains some smooth muscles that help expel semen during ejaculation. Read more here

One day I hope to have a little house in the Kootenays with a big big garden full of lavender and other wonderful herbs. It would be so lovely to have a little storefront with "Angel's Apothecary" and have a set up like Gaia Gardens http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com/2011/03/gaia-gardens-apothecary.html and sell all sorts of wonderful essential oils, creams, lotions and natural soaps. I dream that Angel and I will become Herbalists and Aromatherapists. That's my dream, my projection, my future!!

The lavenders (Lavandula) are a genus of 39 species of flowering plants in the mint family, Lamiaceae. An Old World genus, distributed from Macaronesia (Cape Verde and Canary Islands and Madeira) across Africa, the Mediterranean, South-West Asia, Arabia, Western Iran and South-East India. It is thought the genus originated in Asia but is most diversified in its western distribution.

The genus includes annuals, herbaceous plants, subshrubs, and small shrubs. The native range extends across the Canary Islands, North and East Africa, Southern Europe and the Mediterranean, Arabia and India. Because the cultivated forms are planted in gardens worldwide, they are occasionally found growing wild as garden escapees, well beyond their natural range. However, since lavender cross-pollinates easily, there are countless variations within the species. The color of the flowers of some forms has come to be called lavender.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil is an essential oil obtained by distillation from the flower spikes of certain species of lavender. Two forms are distinguished, lavender flower oil, a colorless oil, insoluble in water, having a density of 0.885 g/mL; and lavender spike oil, a distillate from the herb Lavandula latifolia, having density 0.905 g/mL. Lavender flower oil is a designation of the National Formulary and the British Pharmacopoeia. Like all essential oils, it is not a pure compound; it is a complex mixture of naturally occurring phytochemicals, including linalool and linalyl acetate. Kashmir Lavender oil is famous for being produced from lavender at the foothills of the Himalayas. Read More Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavender_oil

Therapeutic uses

Lavender oil, which has long been used in the production of perfume, can also be used in aromatherapy. The scent has a calming effect which may aid in relaxation and the reduction of anxiety.

Lasea capsules containing lavender oil with a high amount of linalool and linalyl acetate, termed Silexan by the manufacturer, are approved as an anxiolytic in Germany.[1] The approval is based on a finding that the capsules are comparable in effect to low-dose lorazepam.[2]

It may also help to relieve pain from tension headache when breathed in as vapor or diluted and rubbed on the skin.

When added to a vaporizer, lavender oil may aid in the treatment of cough and respiratory infection.

Lavender oil may also be used as a mosquito repellent when worn as perfume or when added to lotions or hair products. Read More Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavender_oil

Medicinal uses

According to advocates of alternative medicine, lavender oil can be used as an antiseptic and pain reliever to be applied to minor burns and insect bites and stings. It is also said to treat a variety of common ailments, such as sunburn and sunstroke.[3] It can also be used in massage oil mixtures, which may be effective in the relief of joint and muscle pain, or in chest rub mixtures for the relief of asthmatic and bronchitic spasm. It is also said to treat head lice when used in a hair rinse mixture, or on a fine comb to eliminate nits. Some say lavender oil may have played a role in the reduction of advanced mammary tumors in lab rats. Read More Here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lavender_oil

Essential Oils- Where they come from!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik

Mar 3/2011

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_oil
An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing volatile aroma compounds from plants. Essential oils are also known as volatile oils, ethereal oils or aetherolea, or simply as the "oil of" the plant from which they were extracted, such as oil of clove. An oil is "essential" in the sense that it carries a distinctive scent, or essence, of the plant.

Essential oils do not, as a group, have any specific chemical or pharmaceutical properties in common. Instead, they are defined by the fact that they convey characteristic fragrances. It follows that the common tendency to speak of essential oils as a category, as if that implied anything in particular about their medical, pharmacological, or culinary properties, is highly unreliable and often actually dangerous.

Essential oils are generally extracted by distillation. Other processes include expression, or solvent extraction. They are used in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps and other products, for flavoring food and drink, and for adding scents to incense and household cleaning products.

Various essential oils have been used medicinally at different periods in history. Medical application proposed by those who sell medicinal oils range from skin treatments to remedies for cancer, and often are based on nothing better than historical accounts of use of essential oils for these purposes. Claims for the efficacy of medical treatments and treatment of cancers in particular, are now subject to regulation in most countries, and to avoid criminal liability, suppliers of fringe remedies are becoming increasingly vague in what they promise.

As the use of essential oils has declined in evidence-based medicine, one must consult older textbooks for much information on their use.[1][2] Modern works are less inclined to generalize; rather than refer to "essential oils" as a class at all, they prefer to discuss specific compounds, such as methyl salicylate, rather than "oil of wintergreen".[3][4]

Interest in essential oils has revived in recent decades with the popularity of aromatherapy, a branch of alternative medicine that claims that essential oils and other aromatic compounds have curative effects. Oils are volatilized or diluted in a carrier oil and used in massage, diffused in the air by a nebulizer, heated over a candle flame, or burned as incense.

The techniques and methods first used to produce essential oils was first mentioned by Ibn al-Baitar (1188–1248), an Andalusian physician, pharmacist and chemist.[5] Read more here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Essential_oil

Essential Oils

Essential oils, known as nature’s living energy, are the natural, aromatic volatile liquids found in shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. The distinctive components in essential oils defend plants against insects, environmental conditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Essential oils are extracted from aromatic plant sources via steam distillation, and are highly concentrated and far more potent than dry herbs.

While essential oils often have a pleasant aroma, their chemical makeup is complex and their benefits vast—which makes them much more than something that simply smells good.

Historically, essential oils have played a prominent role in everyday life. With more than 200 references to aromatics, incense, and ointments throughout the Bible, essential oils are said to be used for anointing and healing the sick. Today, essential oils are used for aromatherapy, massage therapy, emotional health, personal care, nutritional supplements, household solutions, and much more.

Young Living Essential Oils, the leading provider of essential oils, offers more than 300 essential oil singles and blends. All Young Living essential oils meet the YLTG standard. This means that every essential oil Young Living distills or sources has the optimal naturally-occurring blend of constituents to maximize the desired effect. Only YLTG essential oils should be used for the primary methods of application, which include inhalation and application.

I JUST LOVE GAIA GARDENS!! I was in there last week and bought a bottle orange oil! Wonderful oil. Steam cleaned my house and sprayed it everywhere, it was delicious, calming and oh so sweet. Now my house is a sanctuary and squeaky clean.

I LOVE HERBS!  It's my dream that my child and I learn herbology. She's 8,  I always said I would like her to be an herbologist by the time she's 12. That's 4 years, she already has learned so much from me, in aromatherapy but I have a real good herb book I need to start re-reading and teaching her. Tomorrow I'm going to the library, I'll see what they have and I will just starting surfing the big wide web, the biggest library in the world. I would like to get some advice on the best books or recommended books for learning herbology and I guess botany. Please let me know if you know some good books and resources, I guess courses on the subject!

I highly recommend Gaia Gardens, it's a wonderful store. The renovations look fabulous and the staff are stupendous. Thanks Josey.

Other Apothecaries
http://www.dictionary30.com/dictionary.php?subject=Apothecary

Apothecary from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apothecary

Apothecary (pronounced /əˈpɒθɨkɛəri/) is a historical name for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses materia medica to physicians, surgeons and patients — a role now served by a pharmacist (or a chemist or dispensing chemist) and some caregivers.

In addition to pharmacy responsibilities, the apothecary offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery.

Apothecaries often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the apothecary may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method.

Apothecary 15th Century

The first mention of an apothecary was in the Book of Exodus (Torah and Old Testament) in which Moses was given instructions by God for the preparation of the Holy Anointing Oil that was to be used for consecrating the Tabernacle.
"And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil." Exodus 30:25

Apothecary Meaning and Definition from WordNet (r) 2.0

apothecary n : a health professional trained in the art of preparing and dispensing drugs [syn: pharmacist, druggist, chemist, pill pusher, pill roller]

Apothecary Meaning and Definition from Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Apothecary \A*poth"e*ca*ry\, n.; pl. Apothecaries. [OE. apotecarie, fr. LL. apothecarius, fr. L. apotheca storehouse, Gr. apo, fr. ? to put away; ? from + ? to put: cf. F. apothicaire, OF. apotecaire. See Thesis.] One who prepares and sells drugs or compounds for medicinal purposes.

Note : In England an apothecary is one of a privileged class of practitia kind of sub-physician. The surgeon apothecary is the ordinary family medical attendant. One who sells drugs and makes up prescriptions is now commonly called in England a druggist or a pharmaceutical chemist.
