March 1/2011

I JUST LOVE GAIA GARDENS!! I was in there last week and bought a bottle orange oil! Wonderful oil. Steam cleaned my house and sprayed it everywhere, it was delicious, calming and oh so sweet. Now my house is a sanctuary and squeaky clean.

I LOVE HERBS!  It's my dream that my child and I learn herbology. She's 8,  I always said I would like her to be an herbologist by the time she's 12. That's 4 years, she already has learned so much from me, in aromatherapy but I have a real good herb book I need to start re-reading and teaching her. Tomorrow I'm going to the library, I'll see what they have and I will just starting surfing the big wide web, the biggest library in the world. I would like to get some advice on the best books or recommended books for learning herbology and I guess botany. Please let me know if you know some good books and resources, I guess courses on the subject!

I highly recommend Gaia Gardens, it's a wonderful store. The renovations look fabulous and the staff are stupendous. Thanks Josey.

Apothecary from Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apothecary

Apothecary (pronounced /əˈpɒθɨkɛəri/) is a historical name for a medical professional who formulates and dispenses materia medica to physicians, surgeons and patients — a role now served by a pharmacist (or a chemist or dispensing chemist) and some caregivers.

In addition to pharmacy responsibilities, the apothecary offered general medical advice and a range of services that are now performed solely by other specialist practitioners, such as surgery and midwifery.

Apothecaries often operated through a retail shop which, in addition to ingredients for medicines, sold tobacco and patent medicines.

In its investigation of herbal and chemical ingredients, the work of the apothecary may be regarded as a precursor of the modern sciences of chemistry and pharmacology, prior to the formulation of the scientific method.

Apothecary 15th Century

The first mention of an apothecary was in the Book of Exodus (Torah and Old Testament) in which Moses was given instructions by God for the preparation of the Holy Anointing Oil that was to be used for consecrating the Tabernacle.
"And thou shalt make it an oil of holy ointment, an ointment compound after the art of the apothecary: it shall be an holy anointing oil." Exodus 30:25

Apothecary Meaning and Definition from WordNet (r) 2.0

apothecary n : a health professional trained in the art of preparing and dispensing drugs [syn: pharmacist, druggist, chemist, pill pusher, pill roller]

Apothecary Meaning and Definition from Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary (1913)

Apothecary \A*poth"e*ca*ry\, n.; pl. Apothecaries. [OE. apotecarie, fr. LL. apothecarius, fr. L. apotheca storehouse, Gr. apo, fr. ? to put away; ? from + ? to put: cf. F. apothicaire, OF. apotecaire. See Thesis.] One who prepares and sells drugs or compounds for medicinal purposes.

Note : In England an apothecary is one of a privileged class of practitia kind of sub-physician. The surgeon apothecary is the ordinary family medical attendant. One who sells drugs and makes up prescriptions is now commonly called in England a druggist or a pharmaceutical chemist.

Apothecaries' weight, the system of weights by which medical prescriptions were formerly compounded. The pound and ounce are the same as in Troy weight; they differ only in the manner of subdivision. The ounce is divided into 8 drams, 24 scruples, 480 grains. See Troy weight.
