this year, stop buying shit. let's shut down the spending machine.
What if this holiday season we did something different?
What if we stopped buying things we don't need, stopped chasing sales, stopped filling shopping carts and stopped handing enormous corporations our money simply because advertising tells us we should?
I'm talking about a consumer boycott.
Start with Amazon. Think before you order. Buy less. Repair what you own. Borrow. Trade. Buy second-hand. Support local independent businesses, artists, makers and neighbourhood shops when you can.
And don't stop at Amazon. Look at the corporations that profit from cheap labour, environmental destruction, excessive packaging, disposable products and a business model built on convincing us that what we already own isn't good enough.
This isn't about shaming people who are struggling or who rely on affordable shopping. It's about those of us who have choices using them deliberately.
We have more power as consumers than we sometimes realize.
Every purchase is a decision about where our money goes. Every unnecessary purchase is money we could have kept, saved or spent closer to home.
This year, let's buy less. A lot less.
Let's make corporations compete for our business instead of assuming they are entitled to it.
Let's give independent businesses a chance. Let's support local artists. Let's stop treating consumption as entertainment.
And let's remember: the most powerful thing a consumer can do is sometimes walk away.
No more mindless spending. No more buying just because it's on sale. No more feeding a system that keeps asking for more.
This holiday season, let's make our money count by choosing not to spend it.
