Houses, Hurricanes, and Changing Times on the Outer Banks

Houses, Hurricanes, and Changing Times on the Outer Banks 馃寠

There’s something magical about the Outer Banks — the narrow stretch of sand where waves crash, seagulls circle, and every sunrise feels like a painting. For decades, families built homes here, some just for summer escapes, others for a lifetime of memories. Many of these houses were decades old, built in the 1950s, ’60s, or ’70s, with wooden pilings, stilts, and the confidence of people who trusted the ocean could be tamed.

But the ocean has its own plans. ⚡

Recently, news spread of several houses in Buxton and Rodanthe collapsing into the surf. What’s striking — and heartbreaking — is that all of them were unoccupied. These were houses that owners, local authorities, and the park service knew were in danger. Some were abandoned because insurance became impossible, repairs too expensive, or simply because the forces of nature had caught up.

Watching videos online, you’ll see the predictable comments: “That’s why you don’t build at the beach!” It’s easy to judge when you’re watching from a screen. But every empty house represents a story: decades of summers, generations of memories, and dreams of life by the sea. Building on the coast wasn’t foolish; it was human — and it was beautiful.

Think of *Nights in Rodanthe*, where a storm hits a small inn on the same islands. The story dramatizes what life at the beach can be like — and the reality is even harsher. Hurricanes and storms are more frequent and more intense now, and climate change is raising sea levels and accelerating erosion. What once was a safe, idyllic location is now precarious.

Some of these homes, like the famous inn in the movie, even carry stories of families from diverse backgrounds, including Black families, who made the beach their home and left their mark on these communities. It reminds us that the beach isn’t just property; it’s culture, history, and life lived fully — until nature decides otherwise.

So as we scroll through videos of collapsing houses, let’s pause. Don’t reduce them to “bad decisions” or Instagram-worthy drama. They are markers of a changing world, a warning about the limits of human engineering, and a call to rethink how we live with the ocean rather than against it.

The houses are gone, but the stories, memories, and lessons remain.

U.S. Satellite Data Cut Threatens Hurricane Forecasting

URGENT WARNING / ADVERTENCIA URGENTE

U.S. Satellite Data Cut Threatens Hurricane Forecasting

Trump and DOGE just made everyone less safe — especially in Mexico and hurricane-prone regions.

馃寑 What Happened / ¿Qu茅 Pas贸?

The U.S. Department of Defense has shut off public access to key satellite weather data (DMSP), effective June 30, 2025.
This decision, made under Trump’s DOGE policy, cuts off data that’s been essential for tracking hurricane intensity and rapid changes for over 40 years.

Who's Affected / ¿A Qui茅n Afecta?

Everyone. But especially those in:

  • Mexico
  • Caribbean nations
  • Gulf Coast
  • Pacific coast regions
  • Central America

  • M茅xico
  • Naciones del Caribe
  • Costa del Golfo
  • Zonas de la costa del Pac铆fico
  • Centroam茅rica

Forecasts may now be slower and less accurate. People will have less time to prepare.

✅ What You Can Do / ¿Qu茅 Puedes Hacer?

Use Multiple Weather Apps / Usa Varias Apps de Clima

Recommended / Recomendadas:

  • Windy.com
  • Zoom Earth
  • NOAA Hurricane Tracker
  • Clima M茅xico

Follow Local Sources / Sigue Fuentes Locales

In Mexico:

  • CONAGUA
  • Protecci贸n Civil M茅xico
  • Noticias de radio y televisi贸n confiables

Make a Family Plan / Crea un Plan Familiar

  • Agua, comida, medicina, linternas, bater铆as
  • Conoce rutas de evacuaci贸n y refugios
  • Usa WhatsApp o Signal para compartir alertas

Demand Transparency / Exige Soluciones

5. 馃 Build Community / Fortalece Tu Comunidad

  • Comparte este mensaje
  • Ayuda a vecin@s mayores o personas sin acceso a internet
  • Organiza reuniones comunitarias sobre preparaci贸n

✊ Final Words / Palabras Finales

This decision puts millions of lives at risk. Climate change is making hurricanes stronger and faster, and now we have less warning. But we can resist.

Let’s share, prepare, and protect each other.
Compartamos, preparemos y protej谩monos mutuamente.

With love and hope,
Con amor y esperanza,

Ave Maria

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

With all the Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Tsunamis, Droughts & Earthquakes, I feel the need for a prayer. I made this video today.

My daughter Angel and I went for a beautiful bike ride yesterday and I took these photos and put them in video.

I was looking for a song, and well this one just felt right. I hope you enjoy it.

I have dedicated it to my parents. Angel never met my dad, and she misses her grandma very much. I miss them both a lot. They have missed a lot but not really because I like to believe that they are watching and helping and so this is for them. So they know how much they are loved and missed.

Have a wonderful day everyone and I'm saying prayers for those of you who are struggling with what ever challenges are in your path.

Keep Positive, Think Good Thoughts, Happy Child-like Thoughts, Innocent and Free the way life should be.

Love and Light, Tina and Angel :)

Do You Believe in Angels? For Earthquakes & Hurricanes

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

So a few years ago my little girl and I were walking past a yard sale. I didn't really want to stop, but you know how kids are and so we started looking at things. My little girl, Angel, is very talkative and she struck up a conversation with the lady there. When she found out Angel's name she said, "I have a book for you!"

She gave us the book and I've really enjoyed reading it! It's called the BOOK OF ANGELS by Francis Melville.  http://www.amazon.com/Book-Angels-Guidance-Comfort-Inspiration/dp/0764154036

I swear the angels have really listened and helped so many times, with little miracles and big. I took that book to Mexico and back and it holds a very special place in my life and heart.

There are two special prayers that I want to share now.

I hope it's okay with you Francis. I really think we need them right now. And the more people to share this prayer the better.  So please share, it can not hurt, it can only bring us closer together. Positive energy is what we need.

For Hurricanes
In the name of the all- powerful Creator
I invoke you, great Angel Zamiel,
As the Angel of Hurricanes,
To calm the fury of this terrible storm.
May you divert it from it's path from the most vulnerable places
to blow itself out where few can come to harm
I honor and thank you for hearing my prayer
In the name of the Almighty.

He also states "Your invocation should be addressed to the four winds, starting in the east and working clockwise". Any number of candles may be burned. Visualize the calm of the storm and imagine drawing in the winds spiraling around it, calming them until all is still and peaceful.

* Be VERY CAREFUL WITH CANDLES! Never leave them unattended. Watch out for kids and pets.

For Earthquakes
To Angel Suiel

In the name of the Almighty Creator,
Who allows all thing to be,
I invoke you, great Angel Suiel,
As Ruler of Earthquakes,
To provide the means of warning,
Against impending upheaval.
May you ease the birth pangs of Mother Earth,
That she shudder less violently.
May you guide our builders to build more safely.
I honor you and thank you for your mercy.

To invoke Suiel we can light four white candles, symbolizing hope and stability. We can burn a little myrrh.

May the angels watch over us and bless us.
