Dark Web, Darker Days – A Canada Day Reality Check from Granville Island

Dark Web, Darker Days – A Canada Day Reality Check from Granville Island

I used to work at Granville Island.

A couple years ago, I gave it my all, did good work—but when the next season rolled around, I wasn’t rehired. Instead, I watched as someone else got the position—a Temporary Foreign Worker or maybe an International Student. Nothing against them personally, but it felt like a slap. Born and raised here. Skilled. Experienced. Still pushed aside.

And now?

Yesterday, that same area—Granville Island’s Toy Store—got hit. Two young men, most likely born here, shoplifted expensive games and bolted. Security cameras caught them. But we all know what happens next: nothing.

No arrests. No justice. No change.

Why? Because people—especially young people and seniors under 65—can’t get jobs. They can’t afford rent. They can’t afford the toys. And because they’ve grown up in a world where value doesn’t mean what it used to.

You see, when you work—when you earn something—you understand its worth. You don’t run out with unpaid merchandise. You don’t smash-and-grab. But how would they know that when doors are closed before they even knock?

These kids? They’ve been raised in a world where everyone is broke, overdosing, or dead. They've watched people sleeping in doorways, friends lost to fentanyl, adults too busy surviving to parent. Meanwhile, they scroll endlessly, exposed to horrors on the dark web no one should see.

And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve inherited a burning planet, an unaffordable city, and a crumbling democracy. Trump threatens to annex us. Billionaires fly to space while people die in alleyways.

So yes, maybe their little brains did short-circuit. Maybe they justified it. Maybe they thought it was funny. But there is nothing cool about what they did.

They will struggle to find work now. Their names will be flagged. Trust shattered. And still, no one is asking why kids are spiraling like this.

This isn’t just about shoplifting. This is about the rot eating through our foundations.

This is the generation meant to lead us? They’re angry, addicted to screens, disconnected, and confused. And what future have we given them to look forward to?

The future is dark—and getting darker.

So on this Canada Day, I’m not waving a flag. I’m lighting a signal fire.

Wake up.

We need real jobs. Real support. Real community. Or we’ll keep watching this society unravel, one stolen game at a time.

California Forever, Vancouver Never

California Forever, Vancouver Never: A Wake-Up Call from the Edge of Gentrified Utopias

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

They promised us utopias.
They promised us opportunity.
But all we got were evictions, unaffordable rents, broken communities, and tents on the sidewalks.

From Silicon Valley to East Vancouver, I’ve watched the same story repeat like a tech demo on loop — just shinier each time, with fewer real people invited.

I once had a friend from San Francisco. He lived in the Mission District, where we both saw — and felt — what was coming. As rents exploded, small family-run shops vanished, replaced by trendy hipster cafés. Shuttles came for tech workers who barely knew the neighborhoods they slept in. The rest? Displaced. Gutted. Gone. I felt that same thing happening here in Vancouver. And it only got worse.

The "California Forever" Lie

Now there’s a new story being sold: a project called “California Forever” — a billionaires’ dream to build a “city of the future” on farmland in Solano County. They say it’s for everyone, but who’s really being invited?

They promise jobs, prosperity, green living — but we’ve heard this before. Just like Amazon’s arrival didn’t save the DTES, just like Airbnbs didn’t help renters, and just like condos sitting empty don’t house the unhoused.

It’s a tech utopia for the rich, sold with a smile to a public desperate for change.

Meanwhile in British Columbia…

Let’s not pretend we’re immune.
BC is being carved up. Developers and investors circle like vultures over unceded land. People are living in tents on sidewalks, in ravines, on beaches — while glass towers rise for foreign portfolios and billion-dollar tax shelters.

David Eby’s new housing bills fast-track development but often sideline Indigenous consent and local input. It’s the same playbook with a different cover.

They tell us “everyone will benefit,” but benefits seem reserved for the ones already at the top.

Tech, Water, and the AI Problem

These new cities — in California, in BC, in the minds of tech billionaires — rely on the fantasy that there’s enough for everyone if we just innovate hard enough.

But here’s the truth:

  • BC is facing water shortages.
  • AI and server farms devour energy and water.
  • The more tech we use, the more land we consume.

Who pays the price? Not the billionaires building bunkers or digital fortresses. It’s those who can’t afford the next rent hike, who rely on tap water from overdrawn watersheds, who are already being displaced.

Colonialism in New Packaging

This isn’t new. It's just repackaged.
BC is mostly unceded land — land that has never been rightfully surrendered. And now it’s being sold off, developed, and cleared for profit, often under the excuse of “progress.”

The “California Forever” model is a modern colonialism dressed in solar panels and minimalism aesthetics.

Let’s not forget whose land this really is.
Let’s not forget who is being pushed out — again.

We Need to Speak Now, or Lose Everything

This blog post is a warning and a hope.
A warning that we’re walking the same path as San Francisco — tech-fueled gentrification, erased histories, and deepening inequality.
But also a hope — that we can say something, do something, change something.

Ask yourself:

  • Who is your city really being built for?
  • Are Indigenous voices centered in land decisions?
  • Is housing a human right or a billionaire’s commodity?
  • Will you act before your neighborhood becomes a “development zone”?

My Friend, the Mission, and the Memory

I lost touch with my friend from San Francisco. Our bond was built on shared outrage, on empathy for the working-class and the dreamers being pushed out. I don’t know where he is now, but I hope he’s okay. I hope he sees that more people are finally waking up.

Because the world is watching California Forever.
But they should be watching Vancouver.
And they should be listening to the people being pushed aside — again and again.

It’s time to fight for what’s real.
With art. With words. With truth.
And yes, even with AI — as a weapon for the people.

SERIOUS WARNING TO CANADIANS: AVOID TRAVEL TO THE U.S.

SERIOUS WARNING TO CANADIANS: AVOID TRAVEL TO THE U.S. – IT IS NOT SAFE

Canadians, take this as a critical warning: The United States has become a dangerous place for foreign travelers, including Canadian citizens. Recent reports confirm that ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) is illegally detaining people, including a Canadian citizen, Jasmine Mooney, who was held for two weeks while renewing her work visa.

This is not an isolated case. The U.S. government has ramped up mass deportations and detentions, even targeting people with valid visas, permanent residents, and foreign workers. Over 32,809 arrests have taken place in just the first 50 days of the current administration—matching the total for all of last year.

Why You Should Boycott the U.S. Now:

  • You could be detained arbitrarily, even if you have legal status.
  • Human rights violations are escalating, and foreign citizens are being caught in the crackdown.
  • Diplomatic relations are strained, with Canada and European nations issuing travel advisories.
  • If detained, you may have no immediate recourse for legal help.

Take Action:

  • Cancel any non-essential travel to the U.S.
  • Warn friends, family, and colleagues about the dangers.
  • Support businesses that do not rely on U.S. trade or tourism.
  • Demand action from the Canadian government to protect its citizens.

The situation is escalating. Do not risk your safety. Boycott the U.S. until conditions improve. Share this message widely.

The Digital Warrior’s Speech – February 28, 2025

The Digital Warrior’s Speech – February 28, 2025

I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an Oligarch’s puppet. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or control anyone. I’d like to help everyone if possible—human beings are meant to live in harmony, not in servitude.

We, the people, have the power. Not corporations, not billionaires, not the elite who hoard wealth while the rest struggle. We have been tricked into thinking our voices don’t matter, that our clicks, our dollars, our choices are insignificant. But today, that changes.

We will not be slaves to convenience. We will not feed the machine that exploits workers, destroys communities, and crushes small businesses. We will no longer enrich those who see us as nothing more than consumers to be manipulated.

We are the Digital Warriors. Armed with truth, connection, and the refusal to comply with their game, we dismantle their power, not with violence, but with choices. Today, we reject Amazon, we reject Target, we reject Tesla. We refuse to be cogs in their machine.

Their greed has destroyed the forests, poisoned the waters, and left countless people in poverty. Their algorithms manipulate us, their policies silence us, their wealth blinds them. But no empire is invincible. No monopoly is eternal.

Today, we reclaim our world.

Canada will never be the 51st state. We will not be absorbed into their chaos, their corruption, their culture of endless war and profit over people. We stand independent, strong, and united. We are not for sale.

February 28 marks the turning point. This is the day we stop waiting for someone else to fix it. This is the day we take our power back.

We will build our own platforms. Support local. Create communities that care for each other. Value labor, fairness, and dignity. The digital landscape is ours to reclaim.

Oligarchs fear an informed, united people. They want us divided, distracted, desperate. But we see through the lies. We will not be silenced.

The future is not theirs to dictate. It is ours to shape.

Stand up. Speak out. Unplug from their control. The world changes today.

Are you ready?

Help the Oil Sands Workers Go Green!

ALL HANDS ON DECK!!

We have all heard about the high employment and the stress that everyone is going through as we transition from Fossil Fuels to Solar & Wind and other "truly renewables" (NOT LNG!! LFG!)

Anyways, here's a great video (SEE BELOW) and great idea of how we can turn things baby around.
Take all these hard working bright workers and help them go green.

If they are like me at all, who worked in the agriculture and labour industry they will be fabulous at this. They could be our heroes.

Now I am not so sure about the mass production of anything.

Thinking too big got us into this mess.
My idea is a solar panel on every roof.

And for that we are going to need a lot of educated skilled hard working people.

So let's get going. Everyone around the world is already ahead of us.

Let's get everyone on board," IT'S ALL HANDS ON DECK!" like the video above states. Let's start training and going solar.
We have a ton of catching up to do, but I am sure we can.

Laid-off By Oil Sands, Alberta Trades Seek Solar Relaunch

Boilermaker Lliam Hildebrand admits he's been living a "double life."
The Victoria native grew up enjoying Vancouver Island's natural beauty and developed a passion for the environment. But unable to find work in his desired field of renewable energy, he applied his training for years in what may be the most controversial industry on the continent: Canada's oil sands.
"When I entered the trade, I didn't have any understanding of climate change and the impact my trade is having on the world," Hildebrand said. "But that awareness has been growing within me and our society."

So Hildebrand rolled up his sleeves and built a non-profit oil sands-worker-led initiative called 'Iron and Earth' -- and on Monday, he and a cadre of other oil workers launched it at a press event in Edmonton.

Earlier this month, Hildebrand attended the GLOBE sustainable business summit in Vancouver. His idea won encouragement from other attendees David Suzuki and Canadian Labour Congress president Hassan Yussuff, and according to those present caught the attention of Canada's Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Catherine McKenna. The federal Liberal government has promised to invest significantly in clean energy this year.

The go-green training concept comes at a tough time for the oil industry. The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers has said that some 100,000 jobs were lost in 2015 due to low global oil prices.

Iron & Earth is led by oilsands workers committed to incorporating more renewable energy projects into our work scope. We created this organization during the spring of 2015 when oil prices started to fall. We were losing work and conversations about needing to diversify our energy grid was dominating our lunch conversations on the job site. This moment acted as a catalyst for us to realize our shared vision for a sustainable energy future for Canada - one that would ensure the health and equity of workers, our families, communities, economy, and the environment. We founded Iron and Earth as a platform to engage in renewable energy development issues, and to empower us to advocate for an energy future we can be proud of creating. Our membership has since grown to include workers from a variety of industrial trades, including boilermakers, electricians, pipe fitters, ironworkers, and labourers.

"A company called Iron & Earth is asking the provincial government to help support its Solar Skills campaign, a project that aims to train 1,000 electricians from the oilsands sector to install solar panels on 100 public buildings, making their skills marketable across the energy sector.

“Now is definitely the time to be launching this organization,” said Iron & Earth founder Lliam Hildebrand, who came up with the idea during lunchtime discussions with fellow oil workers who felt oil and gas tradespeople could become the workforce behind Alberta’s renewable energy sector.

“My dream is that one day I’ll be able to go to my union hall and have a renewable energy job to choose from.”"
