To the Children, Teens, and Twenty-Somethings of Vancouver

To the Children, Teens, and Twenty-Somethings of Vancouver 💔🥺

I want to start by saying: I am so sorry. I am sorry that the city you were born into — the streets you walk, the schools you go to, the buses you ride — are so broken. I am sorry that you can’t understand why your parents or grandparents can’t afford bus fare 🚌💸, why they worry about rent 🏠, why sometimes there isn’t enough food 🍞🥛 or heat 🔥, and why they can’t always help you like you deserve.

You see people overdosing 💊💔. You see people sleeping on the sidewalks, in doorways, in parks 🏞️. You see friends or family struggling with substance abuse. Maybe some have died. Maybe your dad or mom works as a police officer 👮‍♂️👮‍♀️, and you notice how stressed, overworked, and unhappy they are. Maybe neighbors fight over money 💰. Maybe some friends go without lunches 🍎🥪, winter coats 🧥, or basic necessities. Maybe you’ve even had to sneak onto a bus because there was no other way to get around.

I want you to know: it’s not your fault. None of it is your fault. You are living in a city and a society where the systems that are supposed to protect and support people are failing — healthcare 🏥, housing 🏚️, social services 💬, schools 📚, policing 👮‍♂️. The people who are supposed to make your life safer and easier — the politicians, developers, and institutions 🏢💸 — often prioritize money, power, and appearances over the lives of ordinary people.

The truth is harsh: thousands of people in Vancouver are unhoused or homeless. Seniors 👵👴 are filling shelters like never before. Indigenous people 🌿 are overrepresented among those living on the streets. Every year, hundreds of people die from overdoses ⚰️💊 — some of them people you may have known, or who could have been your neighbors, your cousins, your friends.

I see the confusion in your eyes. You ask: why are my parents struggling? Why are my friends hungry or cold? Why do so many people around me seem to be suffering while the city keeps building condos 🏢, pouring money into policing 🚓, and ignoring basic human needs?

I don’t have all the answers. But I want you to know that what you see and feel matters. Your empathy ❤️, your awareness 🌟, your frustration 😡 — these are real. They are valid. You are noticing injustice, scarcity, and pain, and that matters more than you know.

I want you to remember that even in a city that often feels harsh, you have the power to see, care, and act. Small acts of kindness ✨ — sharing what you have, checking on a friend 🤝, speaking up about what’s wrong — ripple out in ways you may never see, but they matter.

And I want you to know that it’s okay to be angry 😠. It’s okay to feel sad 😢. It’s okay to feel scared 😨. These are normal reactions when the world around you feels unfair. You are not alone. There are people fighting for change ✊, even if it feels slow. There are others who see what’s happening and are trying to do something about it.

One day, when the systems finally start to catch up, your courage 💪, your understanding 💛, your ability to witness and care, will be the foundation for a better city 🌇. But until then, I want you to hear this: I see you. I hear you. I am sorry you have to live this way. And you are not to blame for the brokenness around you.

You deserve warmth 🧣🔥. You deserve safety 🛡️. You deserve a city where your parents don’t have to choose between rent and food 🍞🏠, and where your friends can go to school and ride the bus without fear 🚌.

Hold on to each other 🤝. Watch out for each other 👀💛. And remember: the fact that you notice, that you care, that you question — that is what keeps hope alive 🌟.

Letter to the Youth: “They’re Not Coming. So We Save Ourselves

(Spanish and French translation below)

🔥 A Letter to the Youth: “They’re Not Coming. So We Save Ourselves.”

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

Dear Youth,

You’ve been lied to.
“Go to school,” they said.
“Get a job,” they said.
“Work hard, and you’ll be fine.”

But you’re not fine. You’re exhausted. You’re sending out hundreds of resumes into the void. You’re drowning in debt, working gigs that lead nowhere, living with your parents—or in a tent—while housing becomes a billionaire’s playground.

And now you’re quitting. Walking away from the job hunt altogether. And guess what?

I get it. I’ve lived it.

I’m 63. Born and raised in B.C.
I’ve worked more jobs than I can list—berry picking, factories, industrial laundries, nannying, Expo 86, cruise ship photographer, janitor, caregiver.
I’ve gone back to school, been buried in student loans, got tossed around by economic crashes, pregnancy, single motherhood, and now—I'm “too experienced,” “too old,” “too something.”

I still can’t get a job.

I clean houses for friends. Couch-surf. Make art. Try to survive. And in all these years, here’s the truth I’ve learned:

The government is not coming to help you.
They’re busy managing PR and propping up systems that serve corporations—not you.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no hope.

🌱 Here’s what you CAN do: Build your own way. Together.

F*** waiting for help. F*** endless applications.

It’s time to organize.
Time to gather.
Time to build.

Imagine this:

  • Kids in kindergarten designing tiny houses.
  • Teens in high school building them—learning tools, plumbing, solar panels, carpentry, gardening.
  • You graduate with skills, with community, with shelter you helped create.

You don’t need their system.
You need each other.

Start your own co-ops.
Build communes.
Create garden villages and art spaces.
Live together, support each other, trade skills and food and energy.

They want you isolated. Online. Addicted. Scared.
That’s how they control you.

But when you get together, in real life, and start to build—you become unstoppable.

✊ Final Words from an Old Timer

You aren’t broken.
The system is.

You aren’t lazy.
You’ve been exploited.

You don’t lack skills.
You lack space to use them.

So take the space. Make it. Claim it. Together.

The new revolution is local. Practical. Communal. DIY.

Pick up a hammer. Plant a seed. Paint a mural. Build a table. Trade your labour for lunch. Share your story. Speak truth. Help your friends. Take care of the elders. Be fierce. Be soft. Be unstoppable.

With love,
🔥 Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita
Artist. Fighter. Mother.
Still here. Still dreaming. Still building.

🇪🇸 Carta a la Juventud: “No van a venir. Así que nos salvamos nosotros mismos.”

Por Tina Winterlik alias Zipolita

Querida juventud,

Formen cooperativas.
Construyan comunas.
Creen aldeas con jardines y espacios artísticos.
Vivan juntos, compartan, intercambien habilidades y alimentos.

Quieren que estén aislados. En línea. Adictos.

Juntos.

La nueva revolución es local. Práctica. Comunitaria. Hecha a mano.

Tomen un martillo. Planten una semilla. Pinten un mural. Construyan una mesa. Intercambien trabajo por almuerzo. Cuenten su historia. Digan la verdad. Ayuden a sus amigos. Cuiden a los abuelos. Sean feroces. Sean dulces. Sean imparables.

Con amor,
🔥 Tina Winterlik alias Zipolita
Artista. Guerrera. Madre.

Par Tina Winterlik alias Zipolita

Chère jeunesse,

On vous a menti.
« Va à l'école », disaient-ils.
« Trouve un travail », disaient-ils.
« Travaille dur, et tout ira bien. »

Alors prenez cet espace. Créez-le. Protégez-le. Ensemble.

La nouvelle révolution est locale. Pratique. Collective. Artisanale.

Racontez votre histoire. Dites la vérité. Aidez vos amis. Protégez les anciens. Soyez forts. Soyez doux. Soyez inarrêtables.

Avec amour,

Mood Pills, Vitamins, and the Hidden Danger

🌿 A Pill for Every Problem? Not in My House

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

📍  Mood Pills, Vitamins, and the Hidden Danger

Recently, Health Canada issued a warning about unauthorized "mood and stress" supplements sold online and in Alberta under the name Natrol DHEA Mood & Stress 25mg. Marketed as natural vitamins, they contained DHEA, a controlled substance in Canada linked to hormone imbalances, psychiatric issues, and even increased suicide risk.

These weren’t approved by Health Canada—but they were still sold to people desperate for relief.

I’ve lived through this story—from the inside.

💬 English | Anglais | Inglés

I watched my mom suffer—not just from chronic pain, but from the pills that were supposed to help her. She was prescribed so many. I remember her taking nine pills a day. She just wanted relief.

But I saw the damage. I knew I couldn’t stay.

At nearly 28, I left. I moved 9 hours away. I quit smoking, lost 35 pounds, and started over.

In 1999, after I lost my job at a mapping company, I flew to Rarotonga for six weeks—carrying a suitcase full of vitamins, still looking for a fix.

But when I became a mom, I let it all go. I was poor and alone, but I chose real food, clean water, walks, rest, and presence. We didn’t take vitamins. We avoided pills.

But my kid still struggled. Depression hit hard. A doctor gave them medication with this warning:

"May cause suicidal thoughts in people under 19."

And it did.
But they survived.

That’s why I speak up—because people are still being sold hope in a bottle. But healing takes more than a label. It takes truth, safety, and community.

He vivido algo muy similar.

Dark Web, Darker Days – A Canada Day Reality Check from Granville Island

Dark Web, Darker Days – A Canada Day Reality Check from Granville Island

I used to work at Granville Island.

A couple years ago, I gave it my all, did good work—but when the next season rolled around, I wasn’t rehired. Instead, I watched as someone else got the position—a Temporary Foreign Worker or maybe an International Student. Nothing against them personally, but it felt like a slap. Born and raised here. Skilled. Experienced. Still pushed aside.

And now?

Yesterday, that same area—Granville Island’s Toy Store—got hit. Two young men, most likely born here, shoplifted expensive games and bolted. Security cameras caught them. But we all know what happens next: nothing.

No arrests. No justice. No change.

Why? Because people—especially young people and seniors under 65—can’t get jobs. They can’t afford rent. They can’t afford the toys. And because they’ve grown up in a world where value doesn’t mean what it used to.

You see, when you work—when you earn something—you understand its worth. You don’t run out with unpaid merchandise. You don’t smash-and-grab. But how would they know that when doors are closed before they even knock?

These kids? They’ve been raised in a world where everyone is broke, overdosing, or dead. They've watched people sleeping in doorways, friends lost to fentanyl, adults too busy surviving to parent. Meanwhile, they scroll endlessly, exposed to horrors on the dark web no one should see.

And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve inherited a burning planet, an unaffordable city, and a crumbling democracy. Trump threatens to annex us. Billionaires fly to space while people die in alleyways.

So yes, maybe their little brains did short-circuit. Maybe they justified it. Maybe they thought it was funny. But there is nothing cool about what they did.

They will struggle to find work now. Their names will be flagged. Trust shattered. And still, no one is asking why kids are spiraling like this.

This isn’t just about shoplifting. This is about the rot eating through our foundations.

This is the generation meant to lead us? They’re angry, addicted to screens, disconnected, and confused. And what future have we given them to look forward to?

The future is dark—and getting darker.

So on this Canada Day, I’m not waving a flag. I’m lighting a signal fire.

Wake up.

We need real jobs. Real support. Real community. Or we’ll keep watching this society unravel, one stolen game at a time.

Listen - NEB- Kinder Morgan hearings

Are you ready for this???
Children vomiting brown goo? Burning eyes, never being able to put your hand in the water because it's toxic...business losing money...millions being spent to (not completely ) clean up the deadly toxic dilbit. Listen to this video and the excellent points made in the videos below from the KinderMorgan hearing. Notice how it's KinderMorgan, before it was Enbridge...it's all so sneaky, in the Amazon it was Texaco then it was Chevron..they will always pass the buck and it is the children, our children that will suffer.

This is the BIG POINT I want to make, the Oil Companies make money cleaning up the spill. That was demonstrated at that Exxon Valdez spill.

Let’s not forget how much it cost to (not completely) clean the Kalamazoo. The current price tag is $1.21 billion (and rising), making it the most expensive onshore oil spill in U.S. history.

"When emergency responders rushed to Marshall, Mich. on July 26, 2010, they found that the Kalamazoo River had been blackened by more than one million gallons of oil. They didn't discover until more than a week later that the ruptured pipeline had been carrying diluted bitumen, also known as dilbit, from Canada's tar sands region. Cleaning it up would challenge them in ways they had never imagined. Instead of taking a couple of months, as they originally expected, nearly two years later the job still isn't complete."

What will happen to Occupy Vancouver?

Just following the twitter feed Greg Renouf

From what I read here, people tried to get help for the girl that passed away yesterday at Occupy Vancouver. It is very sad what happened but the only reason that this poor girl's death is receiving so much attention is because of where and how it happened.

Apparently messages were sent to Mayor Robertson and Insite was contacted and it's unclear if a nurse and supplies arrived. Drug abuse is a very sad problem in Vancouver. Right now bad heroin is going around, I saw a sign posted on this warning people.

This province has a huge homeless problem and many are youths. Gordon Campbell contributed to the huge child poverty problem http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com/2011/03/dignity-project.html we have right now and you can read about the work some wonderful people are doing a Covenant house. http://www.covenanthousebc.org/

I don't know what is actually going down at the camp. I know they have the best intentions and they are definitely trying hard but the are up against huge obstacles...OBVIOUSLY...or they wouldn't be there in the first place.

It's not perfect there, there are going to be bad things happening, bad things are happening all around...how to fix it, who knows...that's what this is all about.

At least people are taking a stand. When people stand up for Saving the Whales or Clayquot Sound, they are not popular, many look at them and think ...Wow! Crazy,...but THANK GOD they did or we wouldn't have whales or the Clayquot.

Yes, the stakes are much bigger now, this is a huge world wide problem. People are afraid. We have to be strong and stay positive, and channel the positive energy into the best avenues possible.

What will happen down at Occupy Vancouver...I have no idea, ...I have no words...

I am very sorry for the girl that passed away, she was someone's beautiful baby, someone's lovely little girl, but somewhere someone failed her, someone hurt her, something happened for her to turn to a terrible drug that would take her life.

Watching the news makes me crazy, they misrepresent things so badly, they kept showing scenes of what they said was "fighting" and saying how the camera man got pushed...but after a bit the reporter said it was because people did not want them filming the girl..that is was disrespectful...and it was.

I want to pay my respects and I pray that she is at peace now and is an angel watching down from heaven and lending a helping hand to this very important cause.

Perhaps the tents aren't the way to go anymore,...what other way can we unite and work together. I had this idea of paper necklaces...http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com/2011/10/111111-occupy-world.html

I posted that link above as it calls for  ALL PHOTOGRAPHERS, BLOGGERS, MUSCIANS, TEXTERS, SOCIAL CHANGES AND FILMMAKERS, ARTISTS- Creative Minds Unite!!

What can we do to keep this alive, it won't be easy, but it must be peaceful. Peace will attract Peace. What ideas do you have? How are we going to change the world? We didn't break it in a day, so it's not like it can be fixed in a day! We have to try though...we have to...for our children!! for the ones we love...
