Gone 40 years but never Forgotten!!

It's that date again. It comes every year. Sometimes it sneaks up or sometimes I'm very aware.

Tomorrow my dad will have be gone 40 years! :( Is that right? My gosh it's such a long time. Then it reminds me of my age. I was thinking that can't be right, I was 11 when he passed, not 10, then I remember I'm 51 not 50 and think WOW! where did the year go? Where have the years gone?

I miss my dad. I think of my mom more but only because I had her much longer. I miss them both a lot.  I really wish they were both here for Angel's sake. But life is what it is.

I am grateful for many of the things my dad did do for me. One great thing is he left me a lot of memories. He did it with his home movies.

And so to commemorate this day I am sharing this video.

I love you daddy! Thanks for the memories!

Henry Hudson School Garden

Lululemon has agreed to fund the development of a school garden at Henry Hudson Elementary.  The next step is to put together an application for the VSB to approve the design.  They are looking among the Hudson parent community for a professional landscaper or landscape designer to help with render the ideas in a way that will really capture the attention of the school board.

If anyone has this skill and can volunteer a few hours to help create the living laboratory in the cycle of life, please contact B. Loughney at  bloughney@gmail.com

I don't know about the rest of you, but lately are you freaked out about everything you eat and feed your kids.

I am.

On one hand you may think I've just been on the internet too much. It's true. There is so much info out there...and so much of it is not good news. It's all don't eat this, be careful of these 10 worse foods, watch out for the water, the list goes on...making us paranoid about everything we put into our body, but also pushing...pushing hard for change.

I tell my little girl, all the time, of things we have to be careful not to eat and what to watch out for.

Problem is we are on a very tight budget and let's face it, mass market food is cheap...so we end up buying stuff I don't want to.  Sadly we live right by the ocean and we can't harvest anything as it's all toxic because it's a huge port filled with ships and boats.

I'm trying hard to change things, I'm going back to school and then hopefully we will move where there is a place I can have a garden...those are the dreams. My dad had it right in the beginning, he had a little hobby farm..oh how I wish I could go back in time and learn and get that place for myself.

But we can't go back...only forward and thus we need to learn from our mistakes and move on.

I really love these videos. They make you emotional, but they are not just showing what is wrong, (in a simplistic and creative way) they are making suggestions on how to make a better world. They have invented games for kids and everyone to learn and play and understand the problems and how to make it better.

It's not going to be easy but slowly I feel more hopeful. One day at a time.

The thing is people didn't start out to make things the awful way it's turned out. I don't think people intended to do all these terrible things to animals, they were just trying to earn a living.

But now we can see and we can make changes...we have to...for our children....for ourselves...for the world and all it's beautiful creatures.

Don't you just love giveways.  I saw an post on Facebook for the Lego Minecraft kit. Now here's the interesting thing. Angel got some birthday money. She's really into this Minecraft although she doesn't have the actual online game. She watches the videos online. Anyways we saw that the Granville Island Toy Company had just gotten the Lego Minecraft in.

I had a job interview, so she went with her step dad and I gave her $20 of her birthday money to spend.

When I got home...things had not gone as planned. My day had been very disappointing and that was okay because she told me as I walked in the door she had a present for me. It was so sweet. A little black stuffed kitty, filled with lavender. I asked why. She said because she wanted to cheer me up.  Her step dad knew I didn't want to spend her money on me and had told her but she had insisted...and in the end I was so touched because she had taken that money and bought a very thoughtful gift...

this was after they went to the store and the Minecraft Lego was $44..

So anyways a week or so pass and there's this giveaway...what do you know ...we won.
Isn't that great!!

Here's the pics.

She's having a lot of fun with it. Besides having Steve and Creeper, she made a little version of herself. It's really cute. Thanks Granville Island Toy Company!! http://www.toycompany.ca/

The Jellyfish Project is an educational initiative focused on generating awareness among youth about the declining health of our world's oceans and our environment at large. Through the power of music and live performance, students are engaged into the environmental conversation and are given information on how to become active participants in the sustainability movement.

About this Video

The Gwaii Haanas Legacy Pole is a 42-foot monumental pole commissioned by a unique cooperative management board made up of equal members of the Haida Nation and the Government of Canada. Known as the Archipelago Management Board (AMB), the body is renowned throughout the world as a model for cultural and natural resource governance. The pole is being carved to honour the 20th anniversary of the Gwaii Haanas Agreement, the cornerstone of a groundbreaking relationship that protects the natural and marine resources.

The Gwaii Haanas Legacy Pole will be raised at Hlk'yah GawGa (Windy Bay) on Lyell Island on Aug. 15, 2013. This will be the first pole raised in the Gwaii Haanas region in over 130 years, building a connection with the historic poles still standing in the villages of SGang Gwaay (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and Skedans (K'uuna Llnagaay).

Great to hear schools are involved.

"We have a few new programs like “Kids Growing Pumpkins” where elementary school kids are targeting to grow 20,000 lbs. of pumpkins to give away to needy families. Our farm goal is 100,000 lbs of vegetables to charity which I really see as an achievable goal. Thus far, the crops slated for charity will be corn, potatoes, cabbage, carrots, turnips, beets, several varieties of squash as well as whatever else we can grow with further funding. With the great support from the aforementioned"

Bless the White Wizard as his Journey continues! R.I.P. Isaac Kawapit

This made me so sad. I didn't hear about it until now. This video really brings it home. It's so sad that this amazing man accomplished so much by leading those kids on a massive journey and now he's gone. I really feel so deeply for the kids, they must be devastated.

It makes me so angry when I think back about how Harper wasn't even there to greet  Isaac and those kids. It should have been such an amazing moment for the nation,...but it was overshadowed by Harper's panda bear photo shoot. http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2013/03/nishiyuu-quest-for-unity-but-harper.html

Still they didn't need his approval or for him to even be there as they really did accomplish so much. R.I. P. Isaac Kawapit. God bless you on your journey.

Read more about Isaac here http://media.knet.ca/node/22530

Nishiyuu's 'White Wizard' walked 1,500 km for First Nations issues

"Isaac Kawapit was a humble man who led a hard life in a remote Cree community near the shores of Hudson Bay in Northern Quebec, living largely off the land and relying on his extraordinary skills as a hunter.

But at the age of 46 (though he was also said to be 47 or 49), Mr. Kawapit did something remarkable. In January, he led a group of six young men, aged 17 to 22, on a frigid 1,500-kilometre walk from Whapmagoostui to Ottawa to raise awareness of the problems facing Canada's First Nations.
By the time they reached the capital, there were 300 walkers and thousands of supporters waiting to greet them and the Journey of the Nishiyuu had become a galvanizing event for young native people across the country.

Mr. Kawapit, the man the walkers called their spiritual leader and their "White Wizard," was found dead in his northern community on Saturday morning. His body was lying outdoors just a short distance from where his mother's house once stood.

Southern Resident Killer Whales: Losing Love (HD)

About the Video- by MEG MCDONALD
From her YouTube page

Published on Jul 23, 2013
The endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales searched for salmon next to sunny San Juan Island on July 10, 2013. Listen to their powerful blows while you watch these wild killer whales swim close together in their tightly bonded family groups! The exuberant cartwheels and breaches by these orcas were filmed next to Vashon Island on December 3, 2012.

These wild killer whales are free to roam where they please, unlike the ones in marine circuses like SeaWorld, and they never leave their mothers. They remain in closely bonded matrilineal family groups for their entire lives, which can last (in the wild) over 100 years for females and over 60 years for males. They swim up to 100 miles per day.

These orcas are endangered because SeaWorld got its start decades ago by capturing and selling one-third of them—specifically targeting the babies, taking an entire generation, and killing many of their mothers, who were trying desperately to protect them. (All but one of those young captured orcas died in SeaWorld's barren concrete tanks within a few years. The sole survivor is Lolita at the Miami Seaquarium, imprisoned alone for 43 years in a tiny bathtub-sized tank.) The population of the Southern Resident Killer Whales has never recovered to its precapture numbers, and these beloved killer whales of Puget Sound remain endangered.

Please visit my beautiful photography website http://www.wildnwbeauty.com and my Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/WildNWBeauty for incredible high-resolution photographs of killer whales and other wildlife, as well as the majestic wild scenery of the Pacific Northwest.

The entrancing music in this video is "Losing Love" by Dexter Britain: http://dexterbritain.co.uk.

Thanks to the Salish Sea Association of Marine Naturalists for helping me compile many marine biologists' recommendations for how we can help these endangered killer whales survive!

We had the greatest time today at Bard on the Beach. I must admit we are truly blessed and that my sister and her husband treated us to the play as a gift for Angel's birthday.

I was a little nervous, seeing how it's Angel's first Shakespearean play and thought perhaps she might get bored. Completely opposite, at intermission she kept commenting on how funny it was. And it was!!

I'm not going to spoil it in case you get to go, but you should try, it really was special. Lots of laughs and surprises too!

It made me really emotional, we were commenting after about it, mentioning that it must be because it's live. They were really good actors too, obviously!

My favourite actor was Todd Thomson, he's really yummy....er.. excuse me...I mean very handsome!! :DD  They are all terrific!

Well I hope you get to seen it. Here's some links for you.
