Vancouver’s Car Addiction: How We’re Driving Ourselves Into a Crisis

Vancouver’s Car Addiction: How We’re Driving Ourselves Into a Crisis

I Gave Up My Car for the Environment. Now I Watch the Roads Choke With Traffic.

I stopped driving over 22 years ago. I did it because I cared—because we were told that cars were one of the biggest contributors to climate change. I sacrificed job opportunities, turned down gigs, and adapted my life so I wouldn’t be part of the problem.

Fast forward to today, and Vancouver is ranked 69th in the world for worst traffic. Cars clog the roads at every hour of the day. The SkyTrain stations are surrounded by seas of parked cars, and Uber has turned the city into a 24/7 traffic jam. Even Tesla, which was supposed to be the future, is now just another oversized status symbol clogging the streets.

Where did we go wrong?

The Numbers: A City Drowning in Cars

  • Over 210,000 new vehicles were registered in BC in 2023 alone—a 15.3% increase from the year before.
  • In March 2024, BC dealers sold 19,542 new cars—a 16.4% spike over March 2023.
  • Between 2016 and 2021, over 250,000 new cars hit BC roads.
  • In 2021, Vancouver alone added more than 29,000 new cars—double the previous five years combined.

(Source: BIV.com, StatsCan)

What Changed?

  1. COVID shifted people away from transit—but they never went back.
  2. Uber & ride-hailing apps flooded the streets with more vehicles.
  3. Newcomers bought cars instead of using transit, adding to congestion.
  4. Owning a car became a "must-have" status symbol—even Teslas.

But what’s worse? Many of these people don’t even care about Canada.

Using & Abusing Canada

I’ve seen it firsthand—people moving here not because they love Canada, but because it’s convenient. Like the 55-year-old woman in my job search class—a teacher with 25 years of experience, moving here not to work, but just to be closer to her kids in the U.S.. Their real life is in Google and Amazon, while Canada is just a stepping stone.

This happens everywhere—people using Canada’s healthcare, schools, and social services while their real wealth and future are in another country. And the traffic? It’s part of the problem. The more people who treat this place as a convenience instead of a home, the worse it gets.

Worst-Case Scenario: The Smog Apocalypse

Look at Mexico City in the 1990s. The air was so toxic that people could only drive on certain days. Imagine Vancouver under a thick blanket of smog, with:

  • Emergency health warnings every summer for respiratory issues.
  • A city-wide car ban to control pollution.
  • Sky-high insurance & tolls just to discourage driving.
  • Children developing asthma from the fumes.

Sound extreme? It’s already happening elsewhere. Do we really want that?

Best-Case Scenario: A Vancouver That Actually Works

What if we actually fixed this? Imagine:

  • Massive investments in public transit, making it the best way to get around.
  • Car-free zones & better bike infrastructure, freeing up the streets.
  • Higher taxes on luxury car purchases, discouraging pointless status symbols.
  • A real crackdown on Uber, limiting the flood of ride-hailing cars.

What Needs to Happen NOW

  1. Stop subsidizing car culture—shift funding to transit.
  2. Increase taxes on excessive vehicle ownership—you don’t need three cars.
  3. Stricter emissions rules—make gas guzzlers expensive to own.
  4. Stronger policies on who gets to stay in Canada—if you’re just here to use it, why should we support that?
  5. A cultural shift—we need to make cars the uncool choice again.

Final Thought: You Have a Choice

You can be part of the solution or the problem. Every car on the road is a choice. Every person who chooses transit, bikes, or walks is part of the future. Vancouver is at a breaking point—do we let it turn into another smog-choked metropolis, or do we finally do something about it?

It starts with you.

Picture This Happening…

So sad and this will happen under Trump🥺😱😢

Picture This Happening…

  1. Your Nanny or Daycare Teacher is Gone
    What happens?
Sofia, who takes care of your little sister while your parents work, is no longer allowed to stay in the country. Immigration laws made it harder for her to renew her visa, and she had to leave suddenly. Now your parents can’t find affordable childcare and are struggling to balance work and family.
    How it affects you:
Your parents are stressed, your sister is unhappy with her new daycare, and Sofia is heartbroken to leave a job she loved.

  2. Your Favorite Restaurant Closes
    What happens?
A family-owned Mexican restaurant down the street, run by immigrants, shuts down because the new laws make it harder for them to stay in business. They couldn’t afford the higher taxes and lost some of their workers who were sent back to their home countries.
    How it affects you:
No more taco nights with friends, the neighborhood feels emptier, and a hard-working family loses everything they built.

  3. Your School Can’t Afford Sports or Arts
    What happens?
Government funding for education is cut, and your school has to make hard choices. They cancel art class, the music program, and all the sports teams. The building doesn’t get repairs, so the roof leaks, and the bathrooms are broken.
    How it affects you:
School feels dull and depressing. You lose the chance to discover a talent or passion, and your town starts to feel neglected.

  4. Your Mom’s Friend Loses Their Job
    What happens?
A factory closes because a big tax break encouraged the company to move overseas. Your mom’s friend, who worked there for 15 years, is laid off. She can’t find another job, so her family has to move to a cheaper town.
    How it affects you:
You miss her kids, your mom worries it could happen to her job, and the community loses a source of income and pride.

  5. A Heatwave Leaves Everyone Struggling
    What happens?
Because environmental rules were relaxed, companies kept building with no concern for climate change. Now, heatwaves are longer and hotter. Your city doesn’t have enough cooling centers or shade trees because no one invested in climate planning.
    How it affects you:
Your family’s electricity bill skyrockets because of air conditioning, the elderly in your neighborhood are at risk, and outdoor events are canceled. Summers feel unsafe and miserable.

  6. Your Aunt’s Business Goes Bankrupt
    What happens?
Small businesses like your aunt’s corner store struggle because tax policies favor big corporations. Her loyal customers can’t afford to shop there anymore because wages are too low and prices keep going up.
    How it affects you:
Family gatherings are full of stress and sadness, and you realize how hard it is for small businesses to survive.

  7. Your Friend Moves into a Shelter
    What happens?
Cuts to affordable housing programs mean your friend Liam and his mom lose their apartment. They end up in a shelter far from school. Liam stops coming to class regularly, and when he does, he seems tired and distracted.
    How it affects you:
You miss your friend, and it’s painful to see someone you care about struggle just to have a home.

  8. Disaster Strikes, and There’s No Help
    What happens?
A hurricane floods your town, but government cuts to disaster relief mean there’s no money to rebuild quickly. Your family has to live in temporary housing for months, and your school is shut down.
    How it affects you:
Life feels chaotic, you fall behind in school, and your family’s savings are drained trying to rebuild.

  9. Hospitals Are Overwhelmed
    What happens?
Cuts to healthcare programs mean fewer people can afford regular doctor visits. This leads to more emergencies, and hospitals are overcrowded and understaffed. Your uncle, who has diabetes, waits too long for care and ends up in serious condition.
    How it affects you:
You’re scared for your family’s health and feel helpless knowing this could happen to anyone.

  10. No One Trusts the News Anymore
    What happens?
False information spreads everywhere, and trusted news sources lose funding or get silenced. People argue about what’s real and what’s fake, and conspiracy theories take over.
    How it affects you:
You feel confused and frustrated because it’s hard to know who or what to believe

  11. This Affects EVERYONE

  • Policies aren’t just “far away” decisions—they touch your neighbors, friends, and family.
  • A lack of support for vulnerable people can create a domino effect: one person’s struggles ripple out and affect the whole community.

Salmon, Rivers, and Our Survival: Why We Must Protect What’s Left

The image of a wild salmon fighting its way upstream is one of resilience, determination, and life. Yet, for all its symbolic strength, this species—and the rivers they call home—are in crisis. Dams, pollution, and climate change are choking these lifelines, and the repercussions go far beyond the fish themselves.

Salmon: A Keystone Species

Salmon are vital not only to ecosystems but to our survival. These incredible fish support countless species, from bears and eagles to the forests themselves, which benefit from nutrients carried by decaying salmon. For Indigenous peoples, salmon are much more than a resource—they are a sacred connection to the land, a source of food, and a cornerstone of culture and tradition.

But over the past century, the number of salmon returning to rivers like the Columbia has plummeted. Dams block migration routes, overfishing strains populations, and pollution poisons the water they need to thrive.

The Cost of Dams and Pollution

The Columbia River, once home to some of the largest salmon runs in the world, is now a shadow of what it was. The construction of massive hydroelectric dams prioritized power generation and flood control but at a devastating cost. Salmon populations dropped dramatically, and communities that relied on these fish—human and animal alike—have suffered the consequences.

Pollution further compounds the problem. Agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and urban development have turned many river systems into toxic environments where salmon struggle to survive.

A Time for Action: Modernizing the Columbia River Treaty

The Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States, established in 1964, was primarily about flood control and hydroelectric power. But as the treaty undergoes modernization, we have an opportunity to address the ecological and cultural costs of these priorities.

Any updates to the treaty must:

Restore salmon habitats by improving dam infrastructure or removing outdated dams.

Include Indigenous nations as equal partners in decision-making.

Enforce stricter pollution controls to protect water quality.

Address climate change impacts on river systems.

Why This Matters to Everyone

When salmon suffer, so do we. Their decline signals the degradation of ecosystems we depend on for clean water, food, and a stable climate. Restoring rivers and salmon populations isn’t just about saving a species—it’s about ensuring a livable planet for future generations.

What You Can Do

1. Educate Yourself: Learn about the Columbia River Treaty and similar policies in your region.

2. Support Advocacy Groups: Organizations like Wild Salmon Center and Indigenous-led initiatives are fighting for salmon and river restoration.

3. Reduce Pollution: Cut down on single-use plastics, use eco-friendly products, and advocate for policies that protect waterways.

4. Raise Your Voice: Contact local representatives to demand action on salmon restoration and sustainable water management.

Salmon are fighters. They’ve survived ice ages and predators for millions of years. But now, they need our help. Protecting them means protecting ourselves. Let’s not let political grandstanding or short-sighted decisions dictate the fate of these incredible creatures and the rivers that sustain us all.

LET'S TRY AGAIN! 2014-2020 Let's Go!!

FOUR YEARS  may have passed but LET'S TRY AGAIN!
The old goal was 2010-2014 well let's try 2016-2020...Ready, Set, Four years. Goooooooooo!!

Back in 2011 I was really excited when I saw this video by Four Years. Go- A Campaign To Change the Course of History. I got so inspired. I really believed if we got everyone on board we could do it. But we faced great challenges. For one, we basically had a dictator running the country and plunging us right into climate change with Tarsands, Pipelines, Mining and Fracking.

I was so I start my own project #SaveMyCoast to raise awareness.

But now we have Justin and I just pray we can turn things around. It won't be easy but we must try.

I created these blogposts the other day and I recommend you check them out.

Heard this new song? What's The Matter With Us?

What's the matter with us?
We're so comfortable cozy
What's a matter with us?
We're so daydreamin dozy

Why are we polluting our children?
There's no future in that
Why put food in our poison?
There's no future in that
Why do away with our woodlands?
Nothing to be gained from that
Why waste the best of our farmland?
Where's the logic in that?

Why be warring each other?
There's so much music to know
Why be fighting each other?
So much good food to enjoy
Why so afraid of another?
So many countries to know
Why so afraid of living when there's
So much lovin' to do...

CANADA -Do YOU know what ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM is?

Watch this video and then look in your own backyard because we got some nasty sh_t going on here with our multi-cultural Canada.

LISTEN and SPEAK UP! but be AWARE because a lot of what this woman says relates to the very same issues we are dealing with here.

ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM

WATCH THIS VIDEO!! The corporations figured out how to make the government pay their court costs by turning the government against the protesters. Apparently this is happening in unions too. The corporations put everything into arbitration that drains the unions bank account. I just learned this today so I need to read up more myself but please watch these videos and check out the links. It's time Canada takes a hard look at itself. I believe most people know the truth. The corporations are basically at war with us the environmentals, the parents, the grandmas because we are trying to protect our children's futures. Things have become warped. There is very little justice. Take a Stand. Become Informed. We Must Unite. #SaveOurCoast #SaveTheForest #SaveLelu #SaveThePeace #SaveTheWhale #SaveTheWholeWideWorld because it's under attack.

It's not just the United States and  Canada, it's everywhere. Look what's happening in Australia. Grandmas are taking a stand. Seriously, when 75 year old people take a stand AND GET ARRESTED- YOU SHOULD BE SAYING -WHAT'S UP?

This is June Norman June is 75 and is standing up for Australias Future on the front line against CSG in NSW. #PilligaPush This morning 5 climate angels were removed off Old mill rd Narrabri by police so Santos can continue construction of there Water treatment facility. Now I am sharing this because you have to see what transpires here. I never understood all of the different variables until I watched and learned how really screwed things are and how innocent forest loving women were arrested AND SENT TO PRISON.

INSANITY!!  and the government did it, they went after the protesters instead of those committing atrocities(crimes) against the environment which was the corporation. Do you understand about corporations were invented so that if you had a company and it went bankrupt you wouldn't lose your home, but it helps them get away with murder- murder of the environment!!! Murder of the trees and all the animals living there. Murder of many in the way of pollution to the air and water ways that cause cancer. Why are we allow corporations to murder things we love?

WAKE UP CANADA!

These people took a stand. They stood up against the government and corporations and the WON, no jail time....still why do you have to get arrested to protect your home from a bomb train or water and air pollution. Why?

I am posting this because not everyone can see video and I believe you need to read this.

The Great Dictator's Speech

http://www.charliechaplin.com/en/synopsis/articles/29-The-Great-Dictator-s-Speech
I’m sorry, but I don’t want to be an emperor. That’s not my business. I don’t want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone - if possible - Jew, Gentile - black man - white. We all want to help one another. Human beings are like that. We want to live by each other’s happiness - not by each other’s misery. We don’t want to hate and despise one another. In this world there is room for everyone. And the good earth is rich and can provide for everyone. The way of life can be free and beautiful, but we have lost the way.

Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost....

The aeroplane and the radio have brought us closer together. The very nature of these inventions cries out for the goodness in men - cries out for universal brotherhood - for the unity of us all. Even now my voice is reaching millions throughout the world - millions of despairing men, women, and little children - victims of a system that makes men torture and imprison innocent people.

To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. .....

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Let us fight for a world of reason, a world where science and progress will lead to all men’s happiness. Soldiers! in the name of democracy, let us all unite! http://www.charliechaplin.com/en/synopsis/articles/29-The-Great-Dictator-s-Speech

VICTORY- White House refuses permit for Keystone XL

HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!! HURRAY!!

WOW, it doesn't seem real. I am pinching myself. This is GREAT!! What a great week, month, year! Things are really starting to happen and see hope for the future.
This is really great news.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BREAKING VICTORY: President Obama has rejected the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline!!!

This is a historic victory that sets the standard for climate action by keeping millions of tons of carbon underground. And it's a victory for the people: the President's courage today is a reflection of the courage of thousands of people who stood up to fight this project.

We want to thank everyone who fought to make this victory happen. Add your name to the Keystone XL Movement Thank You Card to help celebrate making history: http://350.org/thankyou

U.S. President Obama is set to make a statement LIVE @ 11:45 a.m. ET, likely to address Keystone.

"The Obama administration rejected TransCanada's application to build the Keystone XL pipeline on Friday, three individuals familiar with the decision said, capping a seven-year saga that became an environmental flashpoint in both Canada and the U.S.

President Barack Obama was to announce the decision at the White House after meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry. The individuals confirming Obama's decision weren't authorized to comment publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Killing the pipeline allows Obama to claim aggressive action on the environment, potentially strengthening his hand as world leaders prepare to finalize major global climate pact within weeks that Obama hopes will be a crowning jewel for his legacy. Yet it also puts the president in a direct confrontation with Republicans and energy advocates that will almost surely spill over into the 2016 presidential election. Read more here

Watch this informative Video about how we need to get our S*#t together and reinvent the toilet!!

Four out of 10 people worldwide don't have a safe way to poop. Find out why we need a toilet revolution. We need new ideas to help reduce disease and find new ways to turn crap into valuable stuff, like fuel, fertilizer, and fresh water.
