Jackie Traverse is a recent graduate from the school of fine arts at the University of Manitoba. She is an Anishinabe from Lake St. Martin First Nation. Jackie works in all mediums from sculpture, mixed media, painting and video.
Jackie Traverse is already widely known in art communities across Canada. Her paintings, drawings, documentaries, and sculptures speak to realities of being an Aboriginal woman. She has created stop-motion animation on missing and murdered women in Canada, and another on the sixties scoop titled "Two Scoops" and her latest stop motion animation "Empty' is a tribute to her estranged mother. Winnipeg-based First Nations artist Jackie Traverse
knows first-hand that life is not easy for the aboriginal community.
"I'm outraged," she says, "My kids couldn't even stand at the bus stop
without men thinking they're selling themselves."
