Salmon, Rivers, and Our Survival: Why We Must Protect What’s Left

The image of a wild salmon fighting its way upstream is one of resilience, determination, and life. Yet, for all its symbolic strength, this species—and the rivers they call home—are in crisis. Dams, pollution, and climate change are choking these lifelines, and the repercussions go far beyond the fish themselves.

Salmon: A Keystone Species

Salmon are vital not only to ecosystems but to our survival. These incredible fish support countless species, from bears and eagles to the forests themselves, which benefit from nutrients carried by decaying salmon. For Indigenous peoples, salmon are much more than a resource—they are a sacred connection to the land, a source of food, and a cornerstone of culture and tradition.

But over the past century, the number of salmon returning to rivers like the Columbia has plummeted. Dams block migration routes, overfishing strains populations, and pollution poisons the water they need to thrive.

The Cost of Dams and Pollution

The Columbia River, once home to some of the largest salmon runs in the world, is now a shadow of what it was. The construction of massive hydroelectric dams prioritized power generation and flood control but at a devastating cost. Salmon populations dropped dramatically, and communities that relied on these fish—human and animal alike—have suffered the consequences.

Pollution further compounds the problem. Agricultural runoff, industrial waste, and urban development have turned many river systems into toxic environments where salmon struggle to survive.

A Time for Action: Modernizing the Columbia River Treaty

The Columbia River Treaty between Canada and the United States, established in 1964, was primarily about flood control and hydroelectric power. But as the treaty undergoes modernization, we have an opportunity to address the ecological and cultural costs of these priorities.

Any updates to the treaty must:

Restore salmon habitats by improving dam infrastructure or removing outdated dams.

Include Indigenous nations as equal partners in decision-making.

Enforce stricter pollution controls to protect water quality.

Address climate change impacts on river systems.

Why This Matters to Everyone

When salmon suffer, so do we. Their decline signals the degradation of ecosystems we depend on for clean water, food, and a stable climate. Restoring rivers and salmon populations isn’t just about saving a species—it’s about ensuring a livable planet for future generations.

What You Can Do

1. Educate Yourself: Learn about the Columbia River Treaty and similar policies in your region.

2. Support Advocacy Groups: Organizations like Wild Salmon Center and Indigenous-led initiatives are fighting for salmon and river restoration.

3. Reduce Pollution: Cut down on single-use plastics, use eco-friendly products, and advocate for policies that protect waterways.

4. Raise Your Voice: Contact local representatives to demand action on salmon restoration and sustainable water management.

Salmon are fighters. They’ve survived ice ages and predators for millions of years. But now, they need our help. Protecting them means protecting ourselves. Let’s not let political grandstanding or short-sighted decisions dictate the fate of these incredible creatures and the rivers that sustain us all.

This was last year!! Please EVERYONE COME OUT!! WE NEED YOU!!

Listen, please listen...

The village of Snauq - is now known as Kitsilano...

Do it for your Children's Children!!

YOUR ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED!!

For the wild salmon, for the orcas, for the bears and other wildlife that depend on wild salmon populations, for indigenous rights, for our beautiful coast, for your children and all future generations! This Thursday, we need your voice.

The BC NDP Cabinet is meeting with First Nation leaders September 6&7 at the Vancouver Convention Center WEST. Please join us for a rally on Thursday from 11am - 1pm, to tell the BC government not to renew the salmon farm licenses of occupation in the Broughton Archipelago.

The Wild Salmon Defenders Alliance will rally in solidarity with Musgamagw Dzawada'enuxw, Namgis and Mamalilikulla who are occupying two fish farms to assert their Indigenous rights and and responsibilities to care for their unceded territory and fishing resources. We are calling on the BC Cabinet to exercise provincial jurisdiction to revoke licences of occupation given to fish farms in their territories, thus putting an end to 30 years of fish farm violations of their Indigenous rights, and result in a very meaningful act of reconciliation.

It's time for ALL BC citizens to take a stance. We have seen the footage and the evidence of disease within these fish farms. We have seen the endangered herring and wild salmon trapped in the pens. We have seen the deformations, the open wounds, the sea lice, the emaciated fish, the clouds of waste. We have seen the entanglements of whales and other sea life. Thanks to Alexandra Morton, First Nation leaders, the crew of the R/V Martin Sheen, and so many others, we know what is going on out there. Please show up to show your support for the NDP government to revoke these fish farm licenses of occupation. And if you don't live close enough to attend, please phone and email John Horgan's office every day until we are satisfied with their course of action. 1-250-837-1715; premier@gov.bc.ca

Open Letter to John Horgan & Andrew Weaver- Fish Farm Disaster

Dear John & Andrew

I am praying you will be the leaders that we hope you are and step up and end this violence against the salmon, this crime against humanity and nature...

I have worked in the farming/processing industries. It's dark. It's full of disease and it's not natural. This beautiful land and water that we live on is in dire jeopardy. The salmon that have sustained all the living beings here since forever are being wiped out and there is just no time to waste.

I can't put into words everything I have learned in recent years especially this past year, as I made my own attempts at reconciling but I can tell you, there is no time to waste, so much damage has been done, I pray it is not irreversible.

I want my child to grow up in a better world but it's so frightening right now with the salmon being wiped out ...everything here depends on them...it's not to be taken lightly..please I know you see the bigger picture...this is an emergency!! It's as dire as a earthquake, hurricane or tsunami...only so many are blind and ignorant they have no clue what is about to hit them.

Please YOU MUST STOP the salmon farming TODAY!

Thank you for your time, hard work and efforts, it is appreciated and I feel so hopeful that Clark and Harper are gone but we have no time to lose...we are not going to get a second chance. We are counting on you to turn this disaster around. There's no time to waste. You've seen the videos...HELP!!

Salmon are Sacred.
Save Our Wild Salmon. Pray hard and Protect them.
Our children's lives depend on it.

Help Alexandra Morton!! #FishFarmsGetOut

 https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/09/eviction-party-videos-fishfarmsgetout.html

Marine Harvest has narrowed its lawsuit claiming protestors trespassed on a fish farm, abandoning a claim that could involve members of the Dzawada’enuxw First Nation while pressing its lawsuit against biologist and activist Alexandra Morton.

 Alex needs help!!
It is just craZy. We live in the strangest world.

We live in the most AMAZING place that has an INCREDIBLY RICH FOOD SOURCE that has been SUSTAINING a culture for more than 13,000 years but we are so frigging stupid, apathetic or blind we let a foreign company come in here and destroy it.

Our politicians, police, citizens just sit back and watch this insane genocide happen.

It is. Murdering Salmon. When you wipe out the salmon you murder everything that relies on it.
Let that sink in a minute because people need to see the ramifications of their action or inaction.

You are letting this happen. If you are not with us then you must be against because doing nothing is the same and taking the fish farms side.

I think I first heard about Alex in some posts she wrote but the movie Salmon Confidential opened my eyes to the truth of the situation. Fish farms were and are a sick manipulation of nature and nothing healthy will come from it. Farming is warped.

Seriously, I have worked in the farming industry, and where ever you are mass producing something there is tons of waste and disease. That's exactly what Alexandra documented but good ole' Harper and his crew he made sure no one knew or if they did they couldn't do anything.

#FishFarmsGetOut- first and foremost the point...the REAL POINT is the people of Dzawada’enuxw First Nation do NOT WANT YOU THERE. GET OUT!

So now Sweden gets it why can you?

The Musgamagw Dzawada’enuxw Nation have stood in opposition to fish farms in their territory for nearly 30 years. Since time immemorial they have protected their salmon and herring for future generations.

"Our people have spoken."

Fish farms must be removed from our territories.

ATPN interviews chief Willie Moon and his lawyer, Greg McDade about Marine Harvest dropping case. Marine Harvest drops the portion of trespassing case against First Nations Dzawada'enuxw while continuing portion of case against Alexandra Morton. Approximately 60 Dzawada'enuxw boarded the farm (so-called trespassing) but only Morton is sued!

"They (Marine Harvest) have effectively conceded First Nations have the right to board these facilities" Greg McDade

We did it! Langara #Carving4Reconciliation panels complete!

So we did it! I couldn't make up my mind where to post first to share our wonderful news!!

Yesterday was the completion of our responsibility in creating, designing, carving, caring for the red cedar panels and the yellow cedar circles.

Since September 2016 when I won a Carving Award to attend Langara's Reconciliation Carving Cohort, 17 brave souls have been learning and carving together from Justin Wilson, Aaron Nelson Moody, Shane Pointe and many other beautiful souls to create these sacred panels.

Langara was given a sacred name https://mylangaratrccarvingjourney.blogspot.ca/2016/09/musqueam-naming-ceremony-for-langara.html

These sacred pieces were created to honor the children of the Residential Schools who never came home and those Survivors who live with the trauma the rest of their lives and also honor the Missing and Murdered Indigenous women.

This has been a very difficult journey. One I find so hard to put into words.
We had our ceremony yesterday..I had to speak and it was so hard to voice anything of the billions of thoughts racing through my mind. I just told everyone I loved them.

It was such a beautiful ceremony...I cried through nearly all of it.

It is really hard to explain and so I won't try. Garwin Sanford is working on a documentary so we will see how that all goes.

I am going to make a video too but right now I am so exhausted from so much emotion.

"Just know that some people said we shouldn't do this, some thought we couldn't do it, but we have shown everyone we can! "

We have demonstrated that people of all backgrounds and beliefs can come together and work together to try right wrongs. We can acknowledge the terrible truths and we were all witnesses and now we must work with the education systems and all social networks to share the truths and help those who don't know, to  understand the evilness of the past (and present) and help those suffering to cope. There is still so much work to be done but this is a baby step in the right direction.

Here's some photos.

Carvings for Reconciliation.
One panel honors the  murdered and missing indigenous women. One panel honors the children who never returned home from residential school, or who came home forever changed...
#mmiw #carving4reconciliation

I will add the names of the artists/carvers  to pieces in a bit.  Just so you understand the piece. In the center is a design by Aaron Nelson Moody http://splashingeagle.ca/ it is of salmon and all they represent with there struggle to survive and being a life source and life giver. Each of our cohort created a piece to represent themselves. The panel represents all of us. One heart, one mind. Nautsamat!! We are one!

Shane Pointe - from Musqueam and Squamish Nations put Red Ochre on our hands and told us wash our hands. It was very sacred. We then placed our hands on the panels and pushed/shifted the panels to Langara College and the witness saw and heard them take "responsibility " of our sacred work honoring the missing and murdered women and the children of the residential schools.

Save the Skeena Estuary, Lelu Island & Flora Banks

Posted on Facebook - on Skeena Watershed
An annual event we celebrate here in the Skeena every spring - to give you an idea why our estuary is so imporant for our $110 million salmon industry. Not a good location for a massive LNG terminal.

Speak up, share these images on Facebook and other social networks.
