Why British Columbia Has a Tanker Ban — And Why Politicians Must Stop Ignoring It

๐Ÿšข๐ŸŒŠ Why British Columbia Has a Tanker Ban — And Why Politicians Must Stop Ignoring It ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšข

By Tina Winterlik / Zipolita — Winter 2025

For decades, people up and down the West Coast have understood something that too many politicians in Ottawa still refuse to grasp:

๐Ÿ’ฅ British Columbia has a tanker ban for a reason.
๐Ÿ’ฅ It exists to protect one of the most dangerous, turbulent, irreplaceable marine ecosystems on Earth.

And yet, here we are in late 2025, still watching MPs — many of whom have never set foot on these waters — argue as if this is some optional policy, some bargaining chip, some “economic opportunity.”

No.
This is about life and death of an ecosystem.
It’s about food security.
It’s about culture, salmon, orcas, Indigenous rights, and entire coastal communities.

๐Ÿงญ The Real Reason for the Tanker Ban: Geography, Danger, and History

Elizabeth May recently reminded everyone of a crucial truth in her video:
๐Ÿ”น The north coast of British Columbia is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world.
๐Ÿ”น Twisting channels, fierce storms, unpredictable winds, and narrow inlets make it a deadly maze for massive crude oil tankers.

People forget this — or were never taught.

And here’s the part MPs continuously misunderstand:
๐Ÿšซ Alaskan tankers DO NOT sail down our coastline.
They head west out into the open Pacific, far offshore, navigating huge ocean routes designed to keep them away from sensitive coastal ecosystems.

Why?
Because the risk of hugging the BC coastline is unacceptable.

We learned that the hard way.

๐Ÿ›ข️ Remember the Exxon Valdez?

The 1989 Exxon Valdez spill was a global trauma — 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into pristine waters.
Thousands of animals died, entire food webs collapsed, and communities are still dealing with long-term impacts.

BC said never again, not here.

But Exxon Valdez wasn’t the only one.
The West Coast has faced:

  • Diesel spills that wiped out clam beds
  • Bilge dumping
  • Fuel leaks
  • Marine disasters hidden by governments because they’re “inconvenient”

Indigenous Nations warned about this for generations.
Scientists warned.
Fishers warned.
Environmental groups warned.

And still, politicians argue as if this is a debate about “jobs.”

๐Ÿ’” Why Are MPs So Clueless? Why So Greedy?

It’s honestly heartbreaking — and infuriating — that people in Parliament still misunderstand basic environmental geography. Some have clearly never studied marine navigation. Some don’t listen to Indigenous stewards of the land and sea. Some don’t even know where the Great Bear Rainforest is.

And some are simply blinded by corporate interests and campaign donations.

This isn’t intelligence.
This isn’t leadership.
It’s greed mixed with ignorance, and coastal communities are always the ones who pay.

When politicians play with tanker bans, they are gambling with:
๐ŸŸ Salmon
๐Ÿš Clam beds
๐Ÿฆ… Wildlife
๐Ÿงก Indigenous food sovereignty
⛵ Local economies
๐ŸŽฃ Fishing jobs
๐ŸŒŠ The entire Pacific coast

๐ŸŒŽ BC’s Tanker Ban Is Not Extreme — It’s Common Sense

The ban is not anti-development.
It is not anti-economy.
It is not “ideological.”

It is basic risk management.
Even one spill would destroy hundreds of kilometers of coastline and billions in natural capital.

BC isn’t being dramatic.
We’re being responsible — because Ottawa won’t.

๐Ÿชž Reflective Questions (for Readers and Politicians)

  1. Why do MPs with no knowledge of West Coast waters feel entitled to override local voices?
  2. Why are corporate profits always placed above Indigenous rights and environmental safety?
  3. Why do politicians pretend tanker bans are “new,” when BC communities have fought for them for decades?
  4. What does it say about our leadership when they cannot grasp basic marine geography?
  5. If one spill could destroy ecosystems for generations, why do some MPs still treat this as an economic game?
  6. What is the role of greed in political decision-making on environmental issues?
  7. Would these same MPs support tankers in their own home riding’s most dangerous waters?
  8. How can citizens better hold Parliament accountable for decisions that directly threaten coastal life?

Exxon Valdez Spill will NEVER BE CLEANED UP!!

Updated.. I meant to edit the more but got stung by a wasp. https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/08/wasp-sting-ring-er.html  My hand is badly swollen so I am going to post as is. .. I missed going to the event at SFU and  that was upsetting. I saw it get about 10 seconds of coverage on mainstream...which shows how manipulated they are...which is why I wanted to be there to document it. anyways here's my post.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The mayor died suicide after the spill.
Exxon promised to make them whole...said they were lucky.
Listen to the 9:39 mark and 17:40
YOU MUST HEAR THIS!! Don't turn it off.

Your life and your children's live ARE IN DANGER!!!!

This isn't made up...this is real. REAL!

This will happen here in Vancouver, it's not if a spill happens, it's when. There have been 4 spills already...

Listen, Listen...could you imagine this happening to your beach, your river, your town...STANLEY PARK-voted the most beautiful...imagine it as Prince William Sound. 20 years later and there's icky brown toxic shit on the beachs...imagine English bay...Kitsilano beach...covered in this. :(

"Bankruptcies, divorces, suicides, domestic violence spikes, substance abuse spikes, the town was unraveling"

"They were waiting for someone to help..."

Exxon just blew it all off.  They asked for 50 billion and got 5 billion.
That's what they do. LOOK AT THE AMAZON!!

The Big Miracle, Exxon Valdez & Oil Spill Paradigms

#‎crescentbeach‬ train

After watching the Amazon Spills, the Exxon Valdez, Kalamazoo and the many other horrific spills that have occurred,  many of us recognize the paradigms of the Oil spills, the Corporate Army of Oil Giants and the events that occur but for those of you unaware please do read my post and the many others I have created. Inform yourself because this could/will be in your backyard, neighbourhood, vacation paradise and then who will you blame. WE MUST ALL MAKE A STAND!
Read below to get a better understanding of how things really play out. See other links.

There 3 things I want you to consider carefully. Here are some links to explain it better. I getting tired. (this section was from a much larger post.. https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/03/a-lot-of-good-this-will-do-me.html  )

1) The movie is very different than the book
(Inspired by does not mean true)

MOVIE
Big Miracle is a 2012 British-American family drama film starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. The film, directed by Ken Kwapis, is based on the 1989 book Freeing the Whales by Tom Rose, which covers Operation Breakthrough, the 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Miracle

BOOK
Big Miracle tells the true story of three gray whales trapped beneath Arctic ice in the fall of 1988, and of Operation Breakthrough, the collaborative efforts to free them by oil company executives, activists, Inupiat people, the U.S. military, and Soviet ice-breakers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Miracle_%28book%29
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Breakthrough

2) The Press/Media made a Event from a non- Event

The movie shows how all of the participants in the rescue used or tried to use the media for their own purposes, including Greenpeace, which had to bring in more people to answer *phones as calls came in from all over the world and the oil man portrayed in the film by Ted Danson.

* see they didn't have the internet YET!!!

**Remember my other post- about grassroots, power of the people...social media is the new media..it didn't exist when this whale rescue happened. We can use it to OUR advantage. So keep that in mind. Because TOGETHER we WILL change the world! http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/03/grassroots-rock-candy-revolution.html

http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/moviemom/2012/02/the-real-story-big-miracle-and-the-alaskan-whale-rescue.html

"The film focuses on the challenges of the arctic conditions and the bigger challenges of finding a way for the humans to set aside their differences for a common goal.  It also touches on some ot the darker themes Rose addresses more extensively in his book, as indicated by its original title:

Freeing The Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event
"Rose points out that the Soviet ice-cutting ship portrayed in the media of the time and the movie of today as the whale-saver was actually in Alaska as a part of the USSR’s whale-slaughter industry, the largest in the world at the time of the rescue and for many years after. "
"Rose’s book explores the role of the media in what a cynical character in the movie calls “cat up a tree” stories.  The rescue of the three whales had enormous public appeal, but all around it were stories the media overlooked that were more important by any measure.  Rose calculated that the cost of the rescue and media coverage was more than $5.7 million."
3)- (I need to find the link) but the guy that cleaned up the Exxon Valdez oil spill, he got really rich cleaning it because he got chosen for being nice OIL guy in the movie. Updated (see documentary below- watch at the 6:45 mark)

READ THIS!!

"The $500,000 ARCO spent on Operation Breakout was one of the best investments it ever made. A $20 million public relations campaign** couldn’t have bought a tenth the goodwill ARCO earned helping free the three trapped whales. It seemed to be perfect timing.

ARCO cashed in at a critical juncture in the history of the slumping Alaskan oil industry. No oil company in Alaska ever received more favorable press coverage than ARCO did during its two week investment in Operation Breakout.

Usually the rich whipping boy of the environmentalists, ARCO now worked side by side with Cindy Lowry and Greenpeace.

In the game of P.R. Pac-Man, ARCO swallowed any hint of criticism by pouring tremendous resources into a rescue destined to save three animals endangered by nature, not man’s insatiable carving for fossil fuels.

Of course, ARCO’s work on behalf of the three whales stranded in Barrow did nothing to clean up its share of the more than 11,000 acres of North Slope Arctic tundra the Environmental Protection Agency said were ruined by oil drilling."

There is NO BENEFIT from this project- It MUST DIE!!!

IF we are to live this project MUST die. The proof is overwhelming. Elizabeth(see video below) is brilliant and eloquent and it is just common sense. So ridiculous that we must even deal with this at this time in history.

I want to thank my friend for sharing this, what a great find. These old songs are so beautiful and have such powerful messages.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot SPOT
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer, farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But LEAVE me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Come and took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Devastated Killer Whales

"It’s been 26 years since the Exxon Valdez supertanker slammed into a reef, releasing nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil and destroying hundreds of thousands of animals, from sea otters to bald eagles, in and around Alaska’s Prince William Sound"

"The "Chugach transients," as they're called, are the stars of this three part documentary.

Before the spill, they numbered 22. Nine immediately disappeared and were presumed dead, likely from ingesting or inhaling oil. Another six went missing. Now the transients are down to seven. Not one calf has been born since the spill, and the two remaining females are too old to reproduce. The pod will soon die off."

 APRIL 2015 BURRARD INLET
THIS MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!
Burrard Inlet- April 2015

Vancouver city officials posted a boater and watercraft alert on Twitter early Thursday, saying that the spill is “bunker fuel” and that it is toxic. They are warning people not to touch the fuel.

Bunker fuel is a type of liquid fuel used on ships which is fractionally distilled from crude oil. It is extremely crude and highly polluting.

Otters Holding Hands- So Adorable

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

My daughter and I love the Vancouver Aquarium and we especially love the otters. Check out this super sweet adorable video of otters holding handing. It's just too cute!  I hope we can go soon, I hope we can get a family pass this year that would be awesome!

The YouTube Sea Otters

Vancouver Aquarium sea otters, Nyac and Milo, were the stars on YouTube in 2007.

A video showing the otters holding paws, a natural behaviour called "rafting", appeared on the Internet in March 2007. It has now been viewed over 11 million times by people all over the world. Aquarium visitor Cynthia Holmes, who was then a PhD student at the University of British Columbia, shot the video in 2002.

The tremendous response to Ms. Holmes's video on YouTube is a testament to the allure of sea otters. And that's good since they are a threatened species and need our help.

Oil spills are one of the greatest threats to sea otters. Nyac, the blond, female otter in the video was a rare survivor of the 1989 Exxon Valdez Oil Spill. Read More Here
