Why British Columbia Has a Tanker Ban — And Why Politicians Must Stop Ignoring It

๐Ÿšข๐ŸŒŠ Why British Columbia Has a Tanker Ban — And Why Politicians Must Stop Ignoring It ๐ŸŒŠ๐Ÿšข

By Tina Winterlik / Zipolita — Winter 2025

For decades, people up and down the West Coast have understood something that too many politicians in Ottawa still refuse to grasp:

๐Ÿ’ฅ British Columbia has a tanker ban for a reason.
๐Ÿ’ฅ It exists to protect one of the most dangerous, turbulent, irreplaceable marine ecosystems on Earth.

And yet, here we are in late 2025, still watching MPs — many of whom have never set foot on these waters — argue as if this is some optional policy, some bargaining chip, some “economic opportunity.”

No.
This is about life and death of an ecosystem.
It’s about food security.
It’s about culture, salmon, orcas, Indigenous rights, and entire coastal communities.

๐Ÿงญ The Real Reason for the Tanker Ban: Geography, Danger, and History

Elizabeth May recently reminded everyone of a crucial truth in her video:
๐Ÿ”น The north coast of British Columbia is one of the most dangerous stretches of water in the world.
๐Ÿ”น Twisting channels, fierce storms, unpredictable winds, and narrow inlets make it a deadly maze for massive crude oil tankers.

People forget this — or were never taught.

And here’s the part MPs continuously misunderstand:
๐Ÿšซ Alaskan tankers DO NOT sail down our coastline.
They head west out into the open Pacific, far offshore, navigating huge ocean routes designed to keep them away from sensitive coastal ecosystems.

Why?
Because the risk of hugging the BC coastline is unacceptable.

We learned that the hard way.

๐Ÿ›ข️ Remember the Exxon Valdez?

The 1989 Exxon Valdez spill was a global trauma — 11 million gallons of crude oil spilled into pristine waters.
Thousands of animals died, entire food webs collapsed, and communities are still dealing with long-term impacts.

BC said never again, not here.

But Exxon Valdez wasn’t the only one.
The West Coast has faced:

  • Diesel spills that wiped out clam beds
  • Bilge dumping
  • Fuel leaks
  • Marine disasters hidden by governments because they’re “inconvenient”

Indigenous Nations warned about this for generations.
Scientists warned.
Fishers warned.
Environmental groups warned.

And still, politicians argue as if this is a debate about “jobs.”

๐Ÿ’” Why Are MPs So Clueless? Why So Greedy?

It’s honestly heartbreaking — and infuriating — that people in Parliament still misunderstand basic environmental geography. Some have clearly never studied marine navigation. Some don’t listen to Indigenous stewards of the land and sea. Some don’t even know where the Great Bear Rainforest is.

And some are simply blinded by corporate interests and campaign donations.

This isn’t intelligence.
This isn’t leadership.
It’s greed mixed with ignorance, and coastal communities are always the ones who pay.

When politicians play with tanker bans, they are gambling with:
๐ŸŸ Salmon
๐Ÿš Clam beds
๐Ÿฆ… Wildlife
๐Ÿงก Indigenous food sovereignty
⛵ Local economies
๐ŸŽฃ Fishing jobs
๐ŸŒŠ The entire Pacific coast

๐ŸŒŽ BC’s Tanker Ban Is Not Extreme — It’s Common Sense

The ban is not anti-development.
It is not anti-economy.
It is not “ideological.”

It is basic risk management.
Even one spill would destroy hundreds of kilometers of coastline and billions in natural capital.

BC isn’t being dramatic.
We’re being responsible — because Ottawa won’t.

๐Ÿชž Reflective Questions (for Readers and Politicians)

  1. Why do MPs with no knowledge of West Coast waters feel entitled to override local voices?
  2. Why are corporate profits always placed above Indigenous rights and environmental safety?
  3. Why do politicians pretend tanker bans are “new,” when BC communities have fought for them for decades?
  4. What does it say about our leadership when they cannot grasp basic marine geography?
  5. If one spill could destroy ecosystems for generations, why do some MPs still treat this as an economic game?
  6. What is the role of greed in political decision-making on environmental issues?
  7. Would these same MPs support tankers in their own home riding’s most dangerous waters?
  8. How can citizens better hold Parliament accountable for decisions that directly threaten coastal life?

Open Letter: A Plea for Accountability on Predatory Lending, Car Debt, and Transit Injustice in Canada

๐Ÿ“ฌ Open Letter: A Plea for Accountability on Predatory Lending, Car Debt, and Transit Injustice in Canada

By Tina Winterlik (Zipolita)

Dear Elizabeth May, and all Members of Parliament who claim to care about affordability, financial justice, climate action, and human dignity:

I’m writing this open letter as a 63-year-old mother, artist, and dog walker who is currently couchsurfing in British Columbia. I worked hard, raised a child as a single mom, and gave up owning a car 24 years ago to reduce my carbon footprint. I walked, biked, and bussed — even endured a 4-hour daily commute from South Surrey to Granville Island — because I believed in doing the right thing.

Now I see how this system rewards the wrong things:

  • Auto dealerships and banks handing out 20% car loans to newcomers with no credit
  • Bridge and highway megaprojects funded while people sleep in tents
  • New homes sitting empty while the working poor are buried in car debt
  • And a government that keeps claiming to be “green” while subsidizing urban sprawl

I recently published a blog post that tells my story and connects the dots:
๐Ÿ“ “A Timeline of Extraction: The Real Cost of Predatory Lending and Car-Centric Urban Planning”
๐Ÿ”— https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com/2025/08/a-timeline-of-extraction-real-cost-of.html

In it, I draw a direct line between:

  • The auto loan trap ensnaring thousands of newcomers in debt
  • The lack of reliable transit, forcing people into cars
  • And the deliberate choice by governments to build bridges, not homes

This is Canada’s version of the U.S. subprime mortgage crisis — only this time, it’s cars instead of condos. And the people affected are the ones trying to make a life in this country.

๐Ÿ™ I am asking you, Elizabeth May, to:

  1. Raise this issue in the House of Commons — especially the systemic abuse of car loans and infrastructure that destroys communities.
  2. Speak with Mark Carney — the former central banker and current UN climate envoy — and ask him to finally say something about this domestic economic injustice.
  3. Demand answers from the following officials who are either responsible or complicit:
  • ๐Ÿ“ฉ Chrystia Freeland, Finance Minister
  • ๐Ÿ“ฉ Sean Fraser, Housing & Infrastructure
  • ๐Ÿ“ฉ Pablo Rodriguez, Transport
  • ๐Ÿ“ฉ Peter Routledge, OSFI
  • ๐Ÿ“ฉ Judith Robertson, FCAC

I know many people dismiss emails unless they’re from their “constituents.” So I’m putting this in public.
Because the system is rigged — and I’m not the only one saying so.

“There is no bridge wide enough to carry us over the consequences of this crisis if it continues.”
– Tina Winterlik (Zipolita)

Let’s stop pretending we don’t see what’s happening. The banks profit. The politicians deflect.
And the people are left walking — or falling — through the cracks.

No Recess During Crisis: Canadians Demand Parliament Stay and Work

✊๐Ÿ“ข No Recess During Crisis: Canadians Demand Parliament Stay and Work

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

Canada is in crisis — and Parliament wants to take the summer off?

No. Absolutely not. This is UNACCEPTABLE.

While families are sleeping in tents, food banks are overwhelmed, and thousands are dying in the fentanyl crisis, our highly paid Members of Parliament are preparing for nearly 3 months of summer recess.

They already had an 11-week winter break. They already get long weekends. They already make $200,000+ a year, and they get a pension most of us could never dream of. And now, they want to walk away — again — while:

  • Thousands remain homeless across BC and Canada
  • 16,000+ lives lost to toxic drugs since 2016 in BC alone
  • Millions can't afford food — 1 in 4 households are food insecure
  • Rent and housing are unaffordable for a generation
  • Wildfires, floods, and climate breakdown are getting worse
  • Young people are losing hope

This is not “business as usual.” This is a national emergency, and our leaders should be in the House of Commons working — every day, all summer — until lives are saved and change is made.

๐Ÿง“ Do you remember when politicians served the people?

They’ve forgotten. But we haven’t.

We, the people, are watching. And we are demanding:

❗ NO SUMMER RECESS DURING A NATIONAL CRISIS ❗

❗ WE DEMAND ACTION — NOT VACATION ❗

❗ WORK THROUGH THE SUMMER ❗

๐Ÿ’ฌ What Elizabeth May said:

“We are in a national crisis and Parliament is pretending everything is fine.”
— Elizabeth May, June 2025

She’s right. And we must amplify her voice.

✍️ What YOU can do:

  1. Tag your MP on social media and say:
➤ “No recess while Canadians suffer. Get back to work.”

  2. Write to your MP:
➤ “I expect you to vote against summer recess and demand Parliament stay open.”

  3. Start a petition or share this post — because if enough of us say NO, they’ll have to listen.

๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ We are calling for a Summer of Justice.

A Summer of Courage.
A Summer where Parliament finally does the people’s work.

Because Canadians are suffering. And people are dying.

Let’s remind our government:
Recess is for children. Not for MPs during a national emergency.

> Subject: No Summer Recess – Canadians Are in Crisis

Dear [MP's Name],

I am writing as a concerned citizen and constituent to say: Canada is in crisis, and Parliament must not go on summer recess.

While MPs prepare to take nearly three months off, the people you represent are suffering:

16,000+ people in BC alone have died from toxic drug poisonings since 2016.

Thousands are living on the streets or in unsafe shelters.

Food insecurity is at record highs.

Climate emergencies are worsening, and many Indigenous communities are still waiting for basic infrastructure.

Housing is unaffordable, and rents are crushing a whole generation.

This is not a time for vacation — it is a time for leadership, courage, and work.

You are among the highest-paid public servants in the country. We expect you to be in the House of Commons throughout the summer, passing laws, funding solutions, and responding to the people’s real needs.

Please take a public stand: Oppose the summer recess and demand Parliament stay open. We are watching. We are organizing. We will remember who stood up — and who walked away.

Sincerely,

SHAME ON HOUSE OF COMMON HECKLERS or aren't they really BULLIES?

Update: I took this post down because it was acting odd. Makes you wonder why. I am reposting just for a few days...to see happens. I believe there have been some changes....I certainly hope so.

Isn't is absurd that in this day and age adults can be so rude to one another.

What is even more disturbing is these people are making $60,000+ a year - PAID by the taxpayers and they act WORSE than many children.

If children were to be so rude and disrespectful, we would be making great attempts to manage their terrible behaviour, people would look at us, or completely ignore us, our children would get bad grades, be sent to the principals office, offered medication possibly Ritalin or something to manage SHAMEFUL OUTBURSTS that we heard while Elizabeth May was trying to make a very important point.

The point being RESPECT!

SADLY as I heard on the video, there is VERY LITTLE RESPECT in the House of Commons.

HOW DOES ANY WORK GET DONE when people act like that towards one another.
Oh right it doesn't that is why there are so many people suffering in f_king poverty and the climate is totally f_d and these supposed elected people are supposed to fix it...how can we have faith when it feels so hopeless ESPECIALLY WHEN WE HEAR AND SEE BEHAVIOUR LIKE THIS!!

How can any country respect ours if this is the way you work. HOW can we teach our children to respect anyone in government when you ACT LIKE THAT!!!

IT'S 2016, We aren't in the middle ages...no one is getting their head chopped off but you might think we lived in a time like that because the attitude is similar.

IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE.
YOU NEED TO CLEAN UP YOUR ACT- OR GET NEW JOBS.
GROW UP- Or should we say MATURE UP- because YOU ACT WORSE THAN CHILDREN...worse than animals...shameful..disgusting...you should be VERY VERY ASHAMED!!!

Do you act like that at home. DO YOU TEACH YOUR CHILDREN TO ACT LIKE THAT!!
Seriously, do you think you are doing good work when you act in such negative, disrespectful and selfish ways.

BULLYING ISN'T THAT WHAT THIS REALLY IS?
How do we stop children from committing suicide because of bullying when the government is setting an example like this. Seriously, would you treat your mother, sister, family in such a manner. If you do, you need help!!

Here are some links and you should inform yourself and take action.

Climate Change Upon Canada- Watch this!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

Watch this very informative video discussing the issues of Climate Change in Canada and the problems it is causing and how little is being done by Stephen Harper.

"Listen carefully to what he says about the children who were in the womb during disasters."

They Canadian Government has not budgeted for Climate Change Disasters. The are cutting funding for Environment Canada.

HOW MUCH WORSE DOES IT HAVE TO GET BEFORE THE GOVERNMENT WAKES UP!

(Quoted from Video info)
Green Party of Canada Leader Elizabeth May held a press conference with Dr. Gordon McBean on November 18th, 2011 concerning the potentially devastating effects of climate change on Canada in the coming years. A special report from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released earlier in the day on this topic from a global context, called Managing the Risks of Extreme Events and Disasters to Advance Climate Change Adaptation (SREX).

Dr. Gordon McBean is a Canadian climate expert who recently became President-elect of the International Council for Science (ICSU), a non-governmental organization devoted to international co-operation in the advancement of science.

Additional information on Dr. McBean can be found here: http://greenparty.ca/media-release/2011-11-18/canadian-climate-expert-takes-new-international-role

The summary report from the IPCC can be found here: http://ipcc-wg2.gov/SREX. The full report will be found at the same URL in February.

Hey, Hey Hey Canada, Listen UP!!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://gplus.to/zipolita Google+

So this morning I received a very disturbing email. (See below)

Stephen Harper is going to try to push thru a VERY FLAWED BILL AND YOUR PRIVACY IS IN SERIOUS DANGER. Basically it says that if the bill passes that law enforcement will be able to tap our phones and access our online information WITHOUT a search warrant and the will be able to access it by just "SHOWING REASONABLE CAUSE" to the service provider. That "reasonable cause "  wording is way to flexible and you know that it can be abused.

Let's not give our privacy or our rights away!! We have to STOP this now.

Start re-posting this on your Facebook, Twitter & Google+ and raise awareness.  Make sure you do your part to let EVERYONE know about this terrible bill.

This bill needs to be treated the same as the "Stop Gordo from getting the award" because it's way more important. So Listen UP!! and Speak Up Canadians, because this is some serious sh_t!!!

http://www.elizabethmay.ca/
Omnibus Crime Bill

This is Elizabeth's email below.

In a few weeks, Parliament will resume and Elizabeth May, Canada’s first elected Green MP, will be in the House raising the issues that so many others won’t speak to.
Harper’s Conservatives plan to table an omnibus crime bill that contains some very bad legislation. Three of the more disturbing items lumped in with the omnibus Crime Bill are collectively known as the “Lawful Access” legislation:
  • Improving Access to Investigative Tools for Serious Crimes Act (C-50)
  • Investigative Powers for the 21st Century Act (C-51)
  • Investigating and Preventing Criminal Electronic Communications Act (C-52)
The Green Party supports efforts to tackle cyber crime, but is deeply concerned about the erosion of Canadians’ privacy. Currently, government agencies must show probable cause and obtain a court order before tapping your phones, and intercepting your mail and online communications. If this bill is passed, government agencies will be able access your online communications without a court order--they need only tell your service providers that they have a ‘reasonable suspicion’.
In this context, reasonable is a dangerously flexible word that threatens your right to privacy. A reasonable government would give each section of the crime bill the attention that it deserves, encouraging debate and a clarification of possible, unforeseen consequences. Omnibus bills are known to make profound changes to unrelated aspects of administration and policy, especially because Parliament can’t properly study them.

With a majority government, knowing that it can pass every piece of legislation that it creates, the Conservatve government shows a disturbing contempt for Canadians by continuing the practice of linking highly dubious laws to those upon which we can all agree.
Elizabeth forced the Conservatives to take the Mega-Trials section of the omnibus bill to committee and we were able to help fix serious flaws in that section. Now she needs your help in reminding the Conservatives that Canadians care deeply about our justice system and right to privacy. This bill should be divided into logical segments and debated with the attention and seriousness that Canadian voters deserve from their MPs.

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

After the crappy results of the election last night, I can't blog today. I'm too depressed. What happened Canada? I don't get it! I can't talk about it....it's to frustating, saddening, maddening...at least it's sunny out. (What kind of example did you just set for all the children???)

Someone showed me how to fix up all my Facebook pages so I'm going to work on that today and I have a meeting about getting a mentor, so I'll talk to you all tomorrow when I feel a bit better about things.

At least Elizabeth May got in! Thank God for the one little ray of sunshine...now there's little hope for the next time, ...4 frigging years away.

What can happen in 4 years?...that's what Four Years.Go is all about.

35% rise- High Turnout in Early Voting

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Well the World is watching Canada. I think we will be a wonderful example of what we CAN DO if we stick together. If we really let Democracy work for us, we can turn things around and set the example for other Nations.

Egypt was a fabulous example of what Social Media can do, and with Elizabeth May shut out of the debates, it's up to each and everyone of us to make sure that people see her platform so that everyone has the opportunity to make the most informed choice possible.

High Turnout in Early Voting
 http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-13217280
More than two million Canadians have cast early votes ahead of the 2 May general election, marking a 35% rise compared with the 2008 election, officials have said.
Elections Canada said the number indicated a strong turnout but warned the count was only preliminary, with not all polling stations reporting.

Green- Not a Throw Away Vote

Not a Throw Away Vote

Voting Green Is Not A Waste
Why My Vote Isn't Being Thrown Away
by Maureen Turner

Quoting Maureen - http://ht.ly/4HkWK
"When you vote for a party, you are telling them that you believe in what they are saying. If you just voted for them to oust the other party, they don’t know that you are still not satisfied. They assume that a vote for them is a vote FOR their policies.

When you vote for The Green Party, they get $1.75 for every vote and that will help to support them and make them stronger for the next election.

When you vote Green, you are telling the big parties “I’m not happy with you”.

When you vote Green, you let people know that green policies are important."

Come On Canada- Let's be Democratic

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

You know you watch the news sometimes and look at countries where really bad things happens and there are dictators and you wonder "Oh my God!" How did that happen? How did that get so bad. "

Well I feel we are on the cusp of something really bad here. If people really don't stand up and vote this time and make a difference, we are going to be one of those countries that people look at and shake their heads and say "Wow! what happened to Canada!"

I don't want that to happen here! I love Canada. Granted things aren't always perfect, I myself have fallen thru lots of cracks and loopholes in the system but at other times the labour standards act saved me, once when I was a youth and then again later in life when employers tried to take advantage of me.

The health system saved me so I could have a c-section otherwise neither my kid nor I would be here, and there are lots of other great things that I love about Canada and the systems in place.

The systems have for the most part helped me in many ways but there is huge improvement needed in many areas, and where things have gone terribly wrong is when we get a leader in power that creates havoc.

Gordon Campbell did that and has created terrible child poverty, not to mention so many other issues.

Stephen Harper is not good for Canada. He is making Canada sick. He is not for the environment, he is turning the clock back on so many things that were moving forward.

Let's not go back in time folks.

Let's move forward, think open-minded, "treat others as we want to be treated", be transparent, put Climate Change issues at the forefront, all these things that we know are right.

Please go out and Vote on May 2nd and Keep In Mind the Canada you Want!

Vote for the Canada we love, because Canada is in danger. Help Save the Canada We LOVE!!

"Canadians, and all the opposition parties, are basically in the same camp on the major issues in this election -- 74% of us want to keep our gun laws, 82% want a UN treaty on climate change, 56% oppose dropping corporate taxes, 69% want one-tier public healthcare, and on and on. Even conservative voters oppose Harper's flagship policies!

It's time to fix our democracy. Above is a new online tool that tells you if you live in a riding where a challenger can defeat Harper's candidate. This tool identifies the leading opposition challenger in each close race -- if enough us come together across party lines to vote for them, Harper loses, and the majority wins. Simple! "About the Riding Predictions

The riding predictions you see on Project Democracy are based on a model that uses the 2008 election results (with some exceptions noted in specific ridings) and current polling to help voters understand what the public polls probably mean in their constituency" Read More Here http://www.projectdemocracy.ca/vancouver-centre

For the Record- I'm Voting Green, because I believe the Environment is first and foremost because if we don't do something about that, there is NO point to Anything Else. We have to ACT NOW on the environment, there is no more time to wait! It is URGENT! We have to ACT COLLECTIVELY! Now is the time to make a change in the modern world.

Adriane Carr can do that for Vancouver. Elizabeth May can do that! Let them get to Ottawa and fight for us. Vote GREEN Vancouver, let's flip this thing on it's ass and SHOW THEM WE MEAN BUSINESS!!

Prominent former Conservative activist and NDP MLA join forces to back Elizabeth May

A prominent former Conservative and Reform party activist, Fraser Smith, and a former NDP MLA, Don Scott, joined forces today with Elizabeth May for a media conference and “wave” to passing motorists in Sidney. The event took place beside a number of large highway election signs from all candidates in Saanich Gulf Islands, which also now includes a giant sign, commissioned by Smith, stating “CANADA NEEDS ELIZABETH MAY – BUT ONLY YOU CAN ELECT HER”.

“If we all vote as we have in the past, nothing will change for Canada. We will continue to be governed by large parties that like things the way they are,” said Smith. “It is true that Elizabeth May is a tree hugger. But she is also a very good conservative when it comes to the economy, and she is a rabid liberal when it comes to ensuring that we find the ways to help those who cannot help themselves.”  Fraser Smith

Energy Security / Climate Action

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Listen to what Adriane Carr has to say about Energy Security and Climate Action

Climate change is not just an environmental issue. It is an economic, social, and global security issue.

It is the most significant issue of our times -- despite the fact that the other major parties are not seriously discussing it in this election. Our action or inaction now will have repercussions planet-wide, for generations.

The majority of Canadians want Canada to take the action needed to meet our international obligations on climate change. We want Canada to be a global leader, not a laggard. By investing aggressively in energy conservation and renewable energy by acting now we strengthen our economy. We improve our chances of averting catastrophic climate change. We put ourselves on the path of achieving long-term energy security.

As a Green MP in Parliament I will be the champion in Ottawa that Vancouver needs in its pursuit of the "greenest city" vision to be a global leader in climate action.

This would include pushing the federal government to:

Become a global leader in combating climate change, leaving no stone unturned in finding ways to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emission, and ramp up the development and use of renewable energy. That includes putting an economy-wide price on carbon to level the playing field and entice investment in renewables.

End the subsidies to the oil and gas industry and use the funds instead to expand federal programs of specific importance to Vancouver such as for energy retrofits of buildings, including homes, low income housing, schools and hospitals, and a national solar roof program.

Create a secure "green bonds" investment program to raise funds for cities to improve mass transit and undertake other programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the end, if we make the right decisions now, we will end up with a stronger economy, greater energy security, healthier communities and the satisfaction of knowing that we did our very best to minimize the impacts of climate change.

You've got the power. Vote Carr.
