My Whale Murals- Kitsilano

Whale of Tale - Mural by Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

Tina Winterlik (Zipolita) – Artist Bio

Tina Winterlik, also known as Zipolita, is a Vancouver-based artist, photographer, and storyteller whose work lives at the intersection of resilience, nature, and human connection. With a background in digital imaging, photography, and social media storytelling, Tina has spent years documenting both beauty and truth—often turning her lens toward the overlooked, the misunderstood, and the deeply human.

Her creative path has never been separate from her lived experience. Through personal challenges, shifting economies, and a changing city, Tina continues to create with what is available—transforming simple materials into meaningful expressions. Whether through writing, photography, or painting, her work carries a consistent message: that even in difficult times, there is still connection, still kindness, still something worth protecting.

On the Murals – A Story from the Seawall

Yesterday reminded me why I keep going.

Lately, I’ve been writing about difficult things—heavy things. But out there, on the seawall, something entirely different happened.

Person after person stopped to talk to me. Not just passing by—but really stopping. They told me how much they loved the murals. How they look forward to seeing them. How they noticed when one had been damaged. How sorry they were that someone painted over parts of them… even writing something as harsh as “Nuke the whales.”

That one hurt.

But what stayed with me more was the kindness that followed. The words people took the time to say. The care. The encouragement. Honestly, it felt overwhelming—in the best way. Like medicine I didn’t even realize I needed.

If I ever feel low again, I know where to go.

There’s one piece in particular—the old log on the beach.

Last year, it was almost chopped up. I remember being there when people found out. There was a real sense of loss, like something important was about to disappear. But that log isn’t just driftwood—it feels like an old warrior. It has held its place through storms, tides, and time. It protects more than it harms. It belongs there.

And now, it holds art too.

One man who stopped to talk told me his son used to be a tagger. That could have been a tense conversation—but it wasn’t. It turned into something thoughtful and real. We talked about how expensive spray paint is, and how toxic—not just for the environment, but for the people using it.

We even talked about artists like Emily Carr and Vincent van Gogh, and how in their time, they were exposed to harmful chemicals in their paints—things we understand differently now.

It made me feel grateful for my own process.

Most of my materials come from simple places—$2 bottles of paint, brushes from Dollarama. For about $20 and a few hours of work, I painted a whale that’s still in progress… but already alive in its own way.

There’s something freeing about that. No gatekeepers. No expensive setup. Just time, effort, and care.

Some of the murals are in places that are hard to reach—ledges I have to carefully climb up and down. It’s not easy. But maybe that’s part of why they’ve lasted.

From April through summer, into winter—through wind, rain, and salt air—they’ve held up. Not perfectly, but beautifully. There’s wear, yes. But there’s also strength in that. Like they’ve lived.

Yesterday reminded me of something simple but powerful:

People care.

Not everyone—but enough.

Enough to stop. Enough to speak. Enough to see.

And right now, that means everything.

Check out the Whales! Great video!

These people had the most amazing experience!!
 They certainly were blessed.

The killer whale or orca (Orcinus orca) is a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family, of which it is the largest member. Killer whales are found in all oceans, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas. Killer whales have a diverse diet, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and dolphins. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators, as there is no animal which preys on them.

Cherry Blossoms, Whales & Signs

This morning I was very blessed.

I went for walk this morning. Each day lately I have set out in hopes of seeing the whale. Ever since my friend showed me his video of the whale I have been hoping.

In the 20+ years I have lived in Vancouver I have never seen a whale here in the Burrard Inlet. I heard they were here the other year and I was astonished.

Well today was my day.

Those following this blog know that yesterday I created  some very special posts about the issues the Attawapiskat that are facing and truthfully all First Nations, Metis and Inuit basically the indigenous people of this land have the same challenges. Huge change must be made.

Here are the posts- please read them when you have a chance. Everyone needs to inform themselves.

Truckload of #Motherlove heads to #Crosslake
Question for De Beers & Suggestions for the Attawapiskat First Nation
Let's Unite in Solidarity & Say NEVER AGAIN!

I went for my walk and from this gorgeous cherry tree I plucked a little stem that had 3 flowers. Then I walked along the beach and at one point I plucked the petals off one and held them in my hand as I thought nice thoughts and sent wishes and blessings to the young people in Attawapiskat.

And then I tossed them in the water.

Then I repeated for the elders of  Attawapiskat.

Then I did it for all the mommies and daddies of the  Attawapiskat.

And then a miracle happened. I saw the whale. I walked for a bit and then there he/she was. So exciting. The photos are not that good, I am sorry. But it was really special.

To me it was a sign.

Do you believe in signs?

I do! I believe it's a sign of good things to come!!

Sending love and light out to everyone, especially in Attawapiskat.
Have a beautiful day.

See even the whale is waving hello!!

Good Friday Vancouver Aquarium Visit!

So we were super blessed today! We used our leisure pass to go to the Vancouver Aquarium.

You get to touch Sting Rays...or some kind of rays...I have to research it better...sorry..very tired and just edited and put up all the photos on FB and Youtube.

There is NO BENEFIT from this project- It MUST DIE!!!

IF we are to live this project MUST die. The proof is overwhelming. Elizabeth(see video below) is brilliant and eloquent and it is just common sense. So ridiculous that we must even deal with this at this time in history.

I want to thank my friend for sharing this, what a great find. These old songs are so beautiful and have such powerful messages.

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique
And a swinging hot SPOT
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They took all the trees
And put them in a tree museum
Then they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go,
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Hey farmer, farmer
Put away that DDT now
Give me spots on my apples
But LEAVE me the birds and the bees
Please!
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til its gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Late last night
I heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi
Come and took away my old man
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I said
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
‘Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill Devastated Killer Whales

"It’s been 26 years since the Exxon Valdez supertanker slammed into a reef, releasing nearly 11 million gallons of crude oil and destroying hundreds of thousands of animals, from sea otters to bald eagles, in and around Alaska’s Prince William Sound"

"The "Chugach transients," as they're called, are the stars of this three part documentary.

Before the spill, they numbered 22. Nine immediately disappeared and were presumed dead, likely from ingesting or inhaling oil. Another six went missing. Now the transients are down to seven. Not one calf has been born since the spill, and the two remaining females are too old to reproduce. The pod will soon die off."

THIS MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN!!
Burrard Inlet- April 2015

Vancouver city officials posted a boater and watercraft alert on Twitter early Thursday, saying that the spill is “bunker fuel” and that it is toxic. They are warning people not to touch the fuel.

Bunker fuel is a type of liquid fuel used on ships which is fractionally distilled from crude oil. It is extremely crude and highly polluting.

In Racing Extinction, a team of artists and activists exposes the hidden world of extinction with never-before-seen images that will change the way we see the planet. Two worlds drive extinction across the globe, potentially resulting in the loss of half of all species. The international wildlife trade creates bogus markets at the expense of creatures that have survived on this planet for millions of years. And the other surrounds us, hiding in plain sight — a world that the oil and gas companies don’t want the rest of us to see. Using covert tactics and state-of-the-art technology, the Racing Extinction team exposes these two worlds in an inspiring affirmation to preserve life as we know it. We MUST restore the balance! It's about RESPECT!

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2015/11/we-must-restore-balance-its-about.html

Please WATCH this POWERFUL moving video. The message is about RESPECT!!
This is a very very important video that all people should watch but especially people from B.C.
Especially ALL the children of B.C. It should be shown in all schools. This video should be shared throughout Canada and the World.

We must protect and respect the land and the protectors of the land.

We are all created equal, everything, all creatures of this earth. No one or thing is more important that the other.

When we learn and understand this way of life we will restore the balance. We may be in for the fight of our lives against those that do not believe this. But it has been proven, as it was on Lyell Island that the people united can never be divided and great change can happen. Please share the video. SALISH SEA by Dana Lyons- Video

THE GREAT SALISH SEA by Dana Lyons
 https://www.facebook.com/SalishSeaMarineSanctuary/videos/656456104457411/

This new music video is the signature piece of the album by the same name. It is a sequel to Dana's hit music video entitled "Salmon Come Home."

The Great Salish Sea is sung from the perspective of "Granny," the 104-year old matriarch of our bioregion's resident orcas. It highlights adverse changes to the underwater acoustic environment through the last century, in the context of visually stunning imagery and soulful lyrics.Enjoy! :)

This is why we must do EVERYTHING WE CAN TO SAVE OUR COAST #SaveOurCoast

What would you do if you had an experience like this!! Wouldn't you feel so blessed by the universe. I sure would. Amazing!! Beautiful!!

Wouldn't that be amazing to experience something like this first hand rather than having to visit an aquarium http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2015/07/aquarium-visit-2015-july-23-qila-angels.html
Wouldn't seeing it live fill you with awe, appreciation, respect...so you would be filled empathy and want to protect it and not let it be destroyed by oil and pollution.

When you vote this election....VOTE TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT!!
Use what every powers you have to have a voice and use it.
Use ART!! VIDEO! PHOTOGRAPHY! BLOGGING! SOCIAL MEDIA!

Share this and anything you can to pursuade people to vote to PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT!!
It's truly our only hope, I believe.

So today my little girl went to the Vancouver Public Library http://www.vpl.ca/ and she came home with a magazine called Waters from the Vancouver Aquarium http://www.vanaqua.org/

So I thought it might be nice to do a blogpost on the Vancouver Aquarium. Now I've been going to the Aquarium since I was a little girl. I grew up with Skana (she was a killer whale or orca if you prefer - we all adored her), and ever since Angel was born we have tried to visit once a year- it's my birthday gift to her- we missed last year, I hope to go this year.

The Aquarium has gotten very expensive, but I understand, they have a lot to take care of and I realize that this fabulous facility cost a LOT to maintain.

We were fortunate to see the baby belugas, a really once in a life time experience, I and will cherish those 10 little minutes forever. How beautiful to see such a rare and wonderous event.

We love the Amazon display and the butterflies, and the sloth and the snakes. Once Angel got to hold a big walking stick bug, now that was super special.

The otters, Ohhhhhhhhhhhh, they are just so sweet. When they swim on there back and open food on their tummy. The old moma ones are so cute with there grey chubby faces.

The B.C. Coast Exhibit is really fabulous. It's truly amazing to see all the beautiful sea life that lives just under the surface, that we would never experience, if it weren't for that wonder display with the sturgeon and all the anemones and fish.

I love the seahorses and the big jelly fish display.

Once Angel got her face painted, that was really cool.

We love to watch the belugas, one of the biggest thrills for Angel is touching the sea cucumbers and star fish.

Yes the Aquarium is really a wonderful place, if you haven't been in a while, you should check it out. Now is a good time as the off season is cheaper than summer.

The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre is a self-supporting, non-profit association dedicated to effecting the conservation of aquatic life through display and interpretation, education, research, and direct action.

The Aquarium is home to over 70,000 amazing animals.
Each year 80,000 school children learn about aquatic life through our school programs.
980 people volunteer at the Aquarium, logging 58,000 hours of service in 2008.
More than 35,000,000 people have visited the Aquarium since 1956.
The Aquarium's 20,000 member-households represent a total of 55,000 people who support the Aquarium.

Located in Stanley Park, the Aquarium is open to visitors from around the world 365 days a year.

The annual operating budget for 2009 is $23 million.

Admissions, programs, groups, membership, retail operations, and food services account for 81% of the Aquarium's operating budget while charitable contributions, donations and restricted grants comprise the remainder.

The Aquarium formed the Vancouver Aquarium Conservation Foundation in 1997 to manage endowment funds to support the Aquarium's education, marine science, animal care and conservation programs for years to come.

The Aquarium also houses five beluga whales:
  • Kavna is the oldest beluga at the Aquarium; she is estimated to be around 40 years of age. She is distinguishable from the other belugas by the fact that she is the whitest, due to her age. She is in the behind the scene along with Imaq. She has given birth at Vancouver Aquarium to a male calf named "Tuaq" however he died around 4 weeks later.
  • Imaq is the only male beluga and is around 21 years of age. He is distinguishable by the fact that he is the largest beluga at the Aquarium. Located in the behind the scene along with Kavna. Imaq fathered "Tuvaq", "Tiqa", and "Nala"
  • Aurora is a female beluga and is around 21 years of age. She gave birth first to Qila, Tuvaq (who died in 2005) and recently Nala. "Aurora" is named after the famous northern light Aurora borealis.
  • Nala was the youngest female beluga born to mother Aurora in June 2009. In the fall, members chose the name Nala which means "surprise gift" in Inuktitut. She died due to inflammation in the lung on June 21st 2010 at around 10:15 p.m. Coins and foreign matter were found in her respiratory tract.
  • Qila is a female beluga and is around 15 years old. She was born at the aquarium to mother Aurora and father Nanuq on July 23, 1995. She is the first beluga to be conceived and born in a Canadian aquarium, and is also the first beluga conceived and born in a Canadian aquarium to give birth to a calf. "Qila" means "beluga" in Inuktitut.
  • Tiqa is a female beluga calf, the daughter of Qila and Imaq. She was born on June 10, 2008.[11] Tiqa has a very interesting personality, she likes to play with birds. Tiqa is the only beluga calf at Vancouver Aquarium. "Tiqa"s name stands for T- Tuesday (the day she was born), I- Imaq (the father), Q-Qila (the mother), A-Aurora (the grandmother).
