Collecting Art: My Opinion

I've been thinking about making a post on collecting art since Invaluable has been working on a similar project. Initially I was hesitant, but I decided that if I pursued it from an angle of social justice and indigenous issues, it could make a difference.

Now those of you that follow me on Google +, Facebook, Twitter, Linked & Instagram know that I am super busy usually blogging about Social Justice, Climate Change, Environmental and Indigenous issues.

I created a project specifically to raise awareness about pipelines, tankers and oil spills and how they can impact our lives and all the animals and marine life as well as forest creatures should a spill occur in their home.

I called it #SaveMyCoast http://savemycoast.blogspot.ca/

I started from just a few paintings I created of my daughter playing on the beach.

And as I blogged about the threat of a oil spill happening right here in Vancouver BC Canada, I was in turmoil of how I could get people to listen and engage. I also needed an outlet to vent my fear and frustration, using Art Therapy I channeled my energy into #SaveMyCoast and digitally added the impression of an oil spill on each painting. It is a glimpse of what could happen if we don't take action and stop them.

It took me a while to think and research what I would suggest to people to collect and this is my opinion. Collect art that raises awareness about #SocialJustice #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalIssues #Indigenous issues. Help bring attention to these serious issues of our time. By collecting them you help preserve them and hopefully they will live on long after you have gone. In the present time, you create conversation and we need to have more conversations about these critical issues that we face and that will impact our children and children's children.

In this way you are helping preserve the #TRUTH

Do you know who Annie Pootoogook was.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annie_Pootoogook
To be honest I sadly did not know of her art until she passed away.
https://canadianart.ca/features/annie-pootoogook-1969-2016/

The news of Annie's passing really affected me. You see her art was a little similar to my early work

But hers had much deeper meanings. What made me really sad and moved me was that instead of writing about how great her art was and the deep meanings behind it and focusing on those issues, the media focus on the wrong thing. It could have helped but it didn't. http://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-monday-edition-1.3779380/stereotypes-plagued-inuk-artist-annie-pootoogook-in-life-as-in-death-says-gallerist-1.3780850

Now Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun: Unceded Territories
http://moa.ubc.ca/portfolio_page/lawrence-paul/
Creates strong messages with his art and it speaks the #TRUTH and I would suggest people collect his work.

My daughter and I visited the Museum of Anthropology this summer and we blessed to see his work
https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/07/inside-museum-of-anthropology-summer_7.html and the work of other gifted artists, such as Ian Reid, Heiltsuk Artist, https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/07/meet-yagis-he-eats-tankers.html

Art has historically been used to portray the #TRUTH but it can tell lies.

https://mylangaratrccarvingjourney.blogspot.ca/2016/10/labels-thanksgiving-truth.html

I find these images so intriguing, one portraying a peaceful moment and the other violence, yet there is so much more going on.

https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/oct/05/artemisia-gentileshi-painter-beyond-caravaggio

From this article in the Guardian, they make a VERY GOOD POINT, why was her art overlooked?
"Artemisia Gentileschi turned the horrors of her own life – repression, injustice, rape – into brutal biblical paintings that were also a war cry for oppressed women. Why has her extraordinary genius been overlooked?" https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2016/oct/05/artemisia-gentileshi-painter-beyond-caravaggio

"“This is the ring you gave me and these are your promises!” yelled Gentileschi as she was tortured in a Rome courtroom in 1612. Ropes were wrapped around her fingers and pulled tight. The judge had advised moderate use of the sibille, as this torture was called, for she was after all 18. Across the court sat the man who had raped her. No one thought of torturing him. Defiantly, Gentileschi told him her thumbscrews were the wedding ring he’d promised. Again and again, she repeated that her testimony about the rape was reliable: “It is true, it is true, it is true, it is true.” "

This painting and the testimony struck a very strong cord with me. The #TRUTH will find a way...sort of like #NATURE finds a way. Well that's my opinion.

So if you are going to collect art, please let it be powerful, let it be for #TRUTH, let is be about #SocialJustice #ClimateChange #EnvironmentalIssues #Indigenous and #Women's Issues,  such as for #MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women).

Let the artist vent and heal through art therapy, let #Truth be heard and shared and let it live on, long past your lifetime so that hopefully in to future, there will be justice, social, environmental, climate.

And as one final suggestion, please, please read this post,
https://mylangaratrccarvingjourney.blogspot.ca/2016/09/cultural-appropriation.html

Watch this video about Cultural Appreciation- There is so much to be learned and it's important to learn and acknowlege the TRUTH in art, culture and to acknowledge Cultural Appropriation and Cultural Appreciation and the Fine Line that exist between them.

That's my opinion.

NEB IGNORES BAY OF FUNDY FISHERMAN!!

Published on YouTube Aug 10, 2016
It was a stunning public relation blunder by the NEB. On the very first day of the Energy East review process, instead of welcoming and accepting comments and concerns from a 1000+ fishermen association in Nova Scotia, the three NEB Board members took only two (2) minutes before deciding to strike down their remarks from the hearing record.

At a Press Conference earlier in the morning, Colin Sproul outlined the reasons why their fishermen feel a tar sands bitumen spill in the Bay of Fundy would devastate their $2 Billion industry. "The fastest tides in the world mean the fastest spreading oil in the world, with no means to mitigate it our stop it in a quick fashion."

MEDIA RELEASE FOR PRESS CONFERENCE: http://canadians.org/media/risk-energ... (Council of Canadians, 2016. "Risk of Energy East to Water and Atlantic Coast Too Great Groups Tell NEB on First Day of Hearings in Saint John". August 8.)

SUMMARY OF CONCERNS FROM BAY OF FUNDY INSHORE FISHERMEN'S ASSOCIATION:

The Bay of Fundy is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the world; a bitumen spill in the Bay of Fundy could end their multi-billion dollar fishery industry which significantly contributes to the food security of Canada; further industrialization with tanker traffic will increase uncompensated fishing gear loss and threaten the critically-endangered North Atlantic Right Whale; the extreme tides of the Bay of Fundy is an unsafe place to navigate Post-Panamex supertankers; question how a bitumen spill could ever be cleaned up from the seafloor or the surface of the sea of the Bay of Fundy; surface oil spills in the Bay of Fundy would spread faster than almost anywhere else in the world and enter it's critically important estuaries in a very short period of time; flow through a single tide cycle is greater than all of the river systems in the world combined and this would carry any spill with it.

Could you imagine a oil spill here? HORRIFIC! What are people thinking...where are their values, ethics, hearts....what about our children...their children...

A LOT of Good this will do me....

 DID YOU READ THIS?

Go have a glimpse at the link and info below, then think about this,
A LOT of Good this is going to do me when there are no salmon to eat because they are all polluted.

Quick Facts:
B.C.’s five conditions were established in 2012 to outline requirements that must be met for the Province to support the construction and operation of heavy-oil pipelines in B.C. The Province’s position has not wavered since then. The 5 conditions are:
  1. Successful completion of the environmental review process.
  2. World-leading marine oil spill response, prevention and recovery systems for B.C.’s coastline and ocean to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy-oil pipelines and shipments.
  3. World-leading practices for land oil spill prevention, response and recovery systems to manage and mitigate the risks and costs of heavy-oil pipelines.
  4. Legal requirements regarding Aboriginal and treaty rights are addressed, and First Nations are provided with the opportunities, information and resources necessary to participate in and benefit from a heavy-oil project.
  5. British Columbia receives a fair share of the fiscal and economic benefits of a proposed heavy-oil project that reflect the level, degree and nature of the risk borne by the province, the environment and taxpayers.
_________________________________________________________

A LOT of good this will do me when I can't breathe from the forest fires caused by the climate change from the mining, drilling, destruction of mother earth to steal her life's blood.

A LOT of good this will do any of us and I know this is a scary thought but it is one we MUST CONSIDER.

An earthquake.

"Vancouver is at a high-risk of having an earthquake. Be prepared, and learn what you can do, and what we are doing to keep us safe during and after an earthquake."
 http://vancouver.ca/home-property-development/earthquake.aspx

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/vancouver-oil-spill-report-predicts-dire-consequences-for-burrard-inlet-1.3076740

IMAGINE... 17 OR more tankers, cargo, and what ever types I see sitting in Burrard Inlet on a given day.  When an earthquake hits, and for what ever reason there are fires everywhere and KABOOOOM,  KABOOOOM, KABOOOOM, one tanker blows and then another and another and there is oil leaking all over the place.

You know what.  Sort of like the end of the dinosaurs. At least the end of us. All of Kitsilano, Point Grey, False Creek.  So then what.

Canada just says ah well, silly people, SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER and they move to Victoria or up the coast and start a new port.

GIVE ME A BREAK!

This isn't rocket science people. The rules and regulations are all nicey nice but you just stop for a minute and think about FLINT MICHIGAN and how all those beautiful children have been poisoned.

And everyone is asking WHY? HOW? I thought we had rules and regulations to protect us.
Right?

But the truth is when it comes to the people...let's face it the poor people or middle income, no one cares. Because rich people don't have time for poor people. People who are not rich are looked down upon by most of  the 1% and haven't a clue to the life you are living. They think they can just move away...and they can. But we can't. And maybe we don't want to.

Update: I just remembered that not only did my grandparents build a home in Vancouver, my dad did too, and then sold it when we moved to Surrey and then Hope. I will try to find out if it still exists. I know my grandma's house is gone.

My grandparents owned a home in Vancouver, my mom was born in Vancouver, my  great great grandmother was from Songhees- a Coastal Salish people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Songhees

The Songhees' traditional foods included salmon, shellfish, whale, deer, duck, berries, camas root, and herbs. The Coast Salish traditionally lived in bighouses, which were large rectangular communal houses of cedar planks, adorned with carved and jointed totem posts.[1]

(Just updating here)
My great great grandpa was one of the early Portugese Pioneers and he settled in Nanoose bay and Enos Lake was named after him.

I truly am entitled to live here. I have lived my whole life in BC and I have lived the last 20 years in Vancouver.

IT IS MY HUMAN RIGHT to have clean air, food and shelter and no government or corporation has the right to create actions that will destroy it.
http://www.claiminghumanrights.org/udhr_article_25.html

If our home, food and water are destroyed....what then.

And the corporations have it made so you will never get justice, because like I said in my other post, once you are on life support, all the money in the world is not going to help you enjoy your life to the fullest before the life support.

So think about this.  This has been going on for the last 20 years that I have followed it and long before that and WHAT makes you think it would be any different hear in BC, in our beautiful Vancouver.  #WeDisagree

Did you ever watch that movie the Big Miracle?
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Miracle

It's a nice show, but the show is much different than the book and there's a 'KEY ' element that people aren't looking at. LOOK LOOK deeply into my eyes when I tell you, there's big money in cleaning up an oil spill.  YES! as gross as that sounds watch the Exxon Valdez video below.

So something else I want you to consider.

There 3 things I want you to consider carefully. Here are some links to explain it better. I getting tired.

1) The movie is very different than the book
(Inspired by does not mean true)

MOVIE
Big Miracle is a 2012 British-American family drama film starring Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski. The film, directed by Ken Kwapis, is based on the 1989 book Freeing the Whales by Tom Rose, which covers Operation Breakthrough, the 1988 international effort to rescue gray whales trapped in ice near Point Barrow, Alaska.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Miracle

BOOK
Big Miracle tells the true story of three gray whales trapped beneath Arctic ice in the fall of 1988, and of Operation Breakthrough, the collaborative efforts to free them by oil company executives, activists, Inupiat people, the U.S. military, and Soviet ice-breakers
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Miracle_%28book%29
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Breakthrough

2) The Press/Media made a Event from a non- Event

The movie shows how all of the participants in the rescue used or tried to use the media for their own purposes, including Greenpeace, which had to bring in more people to answer *phones as calls came in from all over the world and the oil man portrayed in the film by Ted Danson.

* see they didn't have the internet YET!!!

**Remember my other post- about grassroots, power of the people...social media is the new media..it didn't exist when this whale rescue happened. We can use it to OUR advantage. So keep that in mind. Because TOGETHER we WILL change the world! http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/03/grassroots-rock-candy-revolution.html

http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/moviemom/2012/02/the-real-story-big-miracle-and-the-alaskan-whale-rescue.html

"The film focuses on the challenges of the arctic conditions and the bigger challenges of finding a way for the humans to set aside their differences for a common goal.  It also touches on some ot the darker themes Rose addresses more extensively in his book, as indicated by its original title:

Freeing The Whales: How the Media Created the World’s Greatest Non-Event
"Rose points out that the Soviet ice-cutting ship portrayed in the media of the time and the movie of today as the whale-saver was actually in Alaska as a part of the USSR’s whale-slaughter industry, the largest in the world at the time of the rescue and for many years after. "
"Rose’s book explores the role of the media in what a cynical character in the movie calls “cat up a tree” stories.  The rescue of the three whales had enormous public appeal, but all around it were stories the media overlooked that were more important by any measure.  Rose calculated that the cost of the rescue and media coverage was more than $5.7 million."
3)- (I need to find the link) but the guy that cleaned up the Exxon Valdez oil spill, he got really rich cleaning it because he got chosen for being nice OIL guy in the movie.

Read more at http://www.beliefnet.com/columnists/moviemom/2012/02/the-real-story-big-miracle-and-the-alaskan-whale-rescue.html#rkb2QRsLmcyGFcop.99

"The $500,000 ARCO spent on Operation Breakout was one of the best investments it ever made. A $20 million public relations campaign** couldn’t have bought a tenth the goodwill ARCO earned helping free the three trapped whales. It seemed to be perfect timing.

ARCO cashed in at a critical juncture in the history of the slumping Alaskan oil industry. No oil company in Alaska ever received more favorable press coverage than ARCO did during its two week investment in Operation Breakout.

Usually the rich whipping boy of the environmentalists, ARCO now worked side by side with Cindy Lowry and Greenpeace.

In the game of P.R. Pac-Man, ARCO swallowed any hint of criticism by pouring tremendous resources into a rescue destined to save three animals endangered by nature, not man’s insatiable carving for fossil fuels.

Of course, ARCO’s work on behalf of the three whales stranded in Barrow did nothing to clean up its share of the more than 11,000 acres of North Slope Arctic tundra the Environmental Protection Agency said were ruined by oil drilling."

Justin- You are off to a Great Start!!

Wow!! It's wonderful to be heard. To have a government ACTUALLY listen! It's unheard of ! I have to pinch myself this is all real.

So the first thing I heard was they are opening the Kitsilano Coast Guard!! FANTASTIC!! This will save lives right there! Great move!! Thank you!!

http://globalnews.ca/news/2337715/justin-trudeau-tells-fisheries-minister-to-re-open-the-kits-coast-guard-base/

Next and this is HUGE, A moratorium on crude oil tanker traffic for B.C.'s North Coast. OMG!! when this is a  reality, we can all breath!! Such good news, I could cry!!

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/british-columbia/crude-oil-tanker-traffic-moratorium-bc-north-coast-1.3318086

As these realities are sinking in, I am crying!! It's hard to hold back tears, when people have laughed at you and told you you are wasting your time,  that your crazy, and don't bother making an effort to #SaveOurCoast

#SaveOurCoast series- Photography by Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita © 2015

I am so happy, crying tears of JOY!!

And then this, he published all the letters to the minister- that is so awesome!! We can see what he actually have asked them to do!

This is an excerpt of it  to Mr. Duclos:

"All Canadian children deserve a real and fair chance to succeed, and all Canadians should be able to live with dignity. "- See more at: http://pm.gc.ca/…/minister-families-children-and-social-dev…
and this.

"I draw your attention in particular to the Ethical Guidelines set out in Annex A of that document, which apply to you and your staff. As noted in the Guidelines, you must uphold the highest standards of honesty and impartiality, and both the performance of your official duties and the arrangement of your private affairs should bear the closest public scrutiny. This is an obligation that is not fully discharged by simply acting within the law. " - See more at: http://pm.gc.ca/…/minister-families-children-and-social-dev…

Now we just need all the ministers to follow through and we will be starting down are wonderful path to a New and Improved Canada!!

One that people around the world will respect and hopefully try to emulate. It's a long path but I am happy we are starting down it. Hurray!

I am looking forward to a much better life for my child and myself and all Canadians! Baby steps but today he took a lot of babysteps...Way to go Justin!!

http://pm.gc.ca/eng/ministerial-mandate-letters

On a little side note: Justin, if you ever happen to read this, my friend said that once many years ago, (you were probably in your twenties) he picked you and your brother and dad up in his cab. He said you lived on Nelson street in Vancouver here and he took you to the airport. Your dad sat in the front.

He said your dad was really cool and laid back. My friend was impressed that your dad was dressed in a nice casual plaid shirt and not a suit and he was just very quiet, kind and genuine. My friend mentioned something about your mom was writing a book and your dad had inquired if my friend had seen her...he hadn't, he was just making conversation. Do you remember that at all? Probably not! But it's funny to think that we've indirectly connected. Have a great day Justin!! Thank you!!!

P.S. I realized I didn't know how old Justin was, so I googled and looked him up in Wikipedia. Everyone says, he's so young but he's actually 44 years old. He's not a young pup!! He just looks fabulous!   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Justin_Trudeau

I want to send a Thank you to Sophie and Margaret too! Because they are on this journey together and I am so happy for all the working you are all doing. Cheers!

#SaveOurCoast- A Visual Reminder by Zipolita

If we have tankers and pipelines
It's not "if" a spill happens...

It's when a spill happens...

Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita is a B.C. Artist. She has lived in Vancouver for over 20 years.

She holds a Certicate in Interaction Design Essentials from Emily Carr 2014 as well as a Diploma in Professional Photography from Langara 1995 and has completed many online and private studies.

Passionate about the environment, she blogs about important issues that challenge her and others. Her blog http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com is where she started her #SaveOurCoast Series in 2012

Zipolita.com is her portfolio website. When not working in video, photography, web design or social media, she loves to paint. Her muse is her daughter, Angel.

She hopes the digitally imposed oil spill on the paintings of her daughter enjoying a lovely day at the beach will help raise awareness of we stand to lose if there is a major spill.

We must turn to alternative energies.

We have the technology and knowledge but lack the wisdom to use it. Together we must try. This project is one part of a giant step towards a better life for our children and the next 7 generations.
