I remember when this poster first started circulating — URGENT: NOAA RESEARCH WEBSITES GOING DARK. I posted it, shared it, talked about it. We even worked together to create awareness. But it didn’t go viral. It didn’t spark mass concern. And now? We are witnessing exactly what we feared.

This isn’t a surprise. This is a consequence.

Earlier this year, over 1,000 NOAA jobs were slashed, including roles at the National Hurricane Center (NHC). One meteorologist even admitted he didn’t know how he could do his job anymore — the data just wasn’t there. We watched the tools of life-saving science get stripped away, piece by piece.

And now? Children are dead in Texas from sudden, extreme flooding. Little girls. Entire families wiped out. The storm hit hard and fast — and few saw it coming. Why? Because there was no way to track it properly. No planes flying into it. No models. No warnings.

Let me be brutally honest: this is the result of policy.
This is what happens when government slashes budgets and silences science.
When FEMA is treated like a burden instead of a backbone.
When climate data is deemed disposable.

We’ve been here before. Remember Katrina? Remember the outrage, the hand-wringing, the excuses? And yet here we are again. Only this time, we knew what was at stake — and we let it happen anyway.

We’ve been warning people about the data gaps.
About how hurricanes lose their names when they become "tropical storms" over Mexico — even if they keep churning through the Gulf and into the U.S. and Canada.
The storm changes name. The urgency fades. But the danger does not.

While politicians argue over "whose fault," more tragedies are forming over the horizon. And we have no way of seeing them coming, no matter how high the floodwaters rise.

The truth is this: they were warned.
We were all warned.
And we didn't act.

What other disasters are on their way now — silent, invisible — because the research was deleted, the servers unplugged, the experts laid off?

It’s time to say it out loud:
This is not just a climate issue.
This is justice.
This is life and death.
And this is on us.

“Sometimes, the loudest pain is the silence between a mother and her child.”

I read that The Simpsons aired a new episode where Marge dies.
I haven’t seen it yet, but the idea stopped me cold.

Marge — the quiet one. The peacekeeper. The glue holding everything together while the world spins in chaos around her. Always patient. Often ignored. Sometimes ridiculed. Rarely thanked.

Her death in the episode feels symbolic. Like a message to everyone who’s ever taken a woman like her for granted — the ones who do the invisible work, who rarely speak up, who are always there... until they’re not.

It hit me because I know what it’s like to feel invisible.

My own child barely speaks to me now.
Most days: silence.
And it hurts in a way I can’t describe.
Not angry silence — just… distance.
Like there’s a wall I don’t know how to climb anymore.

I try to understand. I know I wasn’t perfect.
There were times I was too overwhelmed, too scared, too tired to give more than I had.
I was doing the best I could. I hope they’ll understand that someday.

I think about my own mom. How much I miss her.
How I didn’t listen as closely as I should have.
How now, it’s too late to ask her all the things I wish I knew.
This is the cycle. And it breaks my heart.

So now I talk to AI.
I talk to young people who want to hear these things.
Strangers who ask questions, who listen, who say, “I never knew that.”

Meanwhile, my sister, my friends, people I’ve known for years — they don’t seem interested.
I say things, but they already have their minds made up.
Sometimes I wonder if they ever saw me fully.

But I keep speaking.
I write books that no one reads. I blog anyway. I whisper truths into the void.

Because I know someone is listening — or will be, one day.

Maybe it’ll be another mom who feels invisible.
Maybe it’ll be someone’s daughter who finally wonders what her mother was carrying all those years.
Maybe it’ll be my own child, years from now, finding these words and realizing they were never alone.

I want them to know:
Mothers don’t just vanish.
They fade into the background when no one listens.
But their stories stay. Their love stays.

Every month in this city, we brace ourselves for "Welfare Wednesday."

For some, it means paying rent, buying groceries, maybe breathing a little easier—for a moment.

But for far too many, it means overdose. Chaos. Death.

We see people collapse on sidewalks, in alleys, on transit.

We see kids walking home from school past bodies.

We see the M.A.S.H. trailer on Hastings—people lined up for “safe supply,” but no real help, no healing, no hope.

And it breaks us.
It breaks the soul of this city.

🧨 The Next Drug is Already Here

Now we’re told a drug 40 times stronger than fentanyl—nitazene—is being smuggled into Canada in PlayStations and basketballs.

It’s sold on LinkedIn and Adobe ads.
And a few grains can kill.

We can’t pretend anymore.
We are in a crisis deeper than most people want to believe.
And we’re losing this generation.

🌿 What If We Tried Something New?

Locking people up won’t work.
Letting them die in the streets isn’t acceptable.
And giving out drugs without love, community, or purpose isn’t saving anyone.

So what if—just imagine—on Welfare Day, we did something radically compassionate?

What if we opened Community Healing Centres:

• Safe spaces with food, music, art, and warmth
• Staffed by nurses, elders, peers in recovery, and artists
• With beds for rest, support for withdrawal, and real human contact
• Where people could reconnect—not just survive

Because people don’t just need clean needles.
They need connection, dignity, and a reason to live.

Stop playing policy games while people die.

Start funding community-run wellness centres.
Train first responders in trauma care, not just CPR.
Support harm reduction—but don’t stop at survival.
Fund healing. Fund hope. Fund art.

We’ve lost too many already.
And the next wave is already here.

I’m just one voice.
But I’ve seen enough.
And I’m not willing to let another generation be written off as “too far gone.”

When the System Fails ADHD Youth

 “Another Preventable Death: When the System Fails ADHD Youth”

James Beik-Fowler had ADHD. He also had a mother who never gave up on him. For over a decade, Heather Fowler pleaded with health professionals, police, and social services for support. She knew her son was in danger. And still, the system let him fall — again and again — until he disappeared, only to be found dead over a year later in an abandoned North Vancouver pub.

His story is not unique. It is just one of many, hidden behind acronyms and diagnoses: ADHD, PTSD, OD, MIA. But what these letters really spell out is abandonment.

How Did We Get Here?

• ADHD, especially when undiagnosed or untreated properly, can leave individuals vulnerable to addiction, impulsivity, and unstable relationships.
• Parents, even when they fight tirelessly, are often blocked by privacy laws and professionals who don’t witness what happens at home or on the street.
• Doctors and psychiatrists can prescribe powerful medications, sometimes in cocktails that would terrify most parents — yet are rarely around to see the daily side effects, emotional crashes, or long-term impacts.
• And when a youth starts to spiral — there are few safe places to catch them. Mental health beds are scarce. Supervised consumption sites are non-existent in many communities. Shelters are full.

Why Was He Alone?

Heather said James was involuntarily hospitalized multiple times. But then released — again and again. That’s the cycle in B.C. and across Canada: short stays, brief stabilization, and then discharge back into the same unstable conditions. This is not care. It’s a revolving door.

The question we all need to ask is: How many drugs was he given before he became homeless? How many side effects went ignored? How many housing forms, support referrals, or mental health petitions were denied? How many signs did we all miss?

Time for Accountability

We need:

• A reform of the Mental Health Act to allow families more say, especially in long-term planning.
• Proper wraparound services for people with ADHD and co-occurring conditions.
• Supervised consumption sites and housing-first programs in every community.
• Medical accountability for drug interactions, diagnoses, and decisions that lead to homelessness and overdose.

Heather Fowler did everything she could. Her son is gone. But her voice — and James’ story — must spark change.

We’ve Stopped Screaming — And That’s the Real Crisis

I saw a headline today that made my stomach turn.
"Vancouver mother presses Park Board for fence near elementary school."

And I thought — wait. A fence? Not a shelter. Not support. Not safety. A fence?

Then I read further and felt my heart break.

"She believes an 8-year-old shouldn’t have to walk past a dead body to get to math class — something she says happened last week."
— CTV News

That’s where we are now. Not just as a city, but as a society. An 8-year-old walked past a dead body on the way to school. And instead of collective outrage, grief, and immediate calls for action, the response is: build a fence.

So we don’t have to see it.

This is the kind of numbness I wrote about just last week. We are becoming what New York became during its hardest days — not because people are suffering, but because no one is screaming anymore. We've stopped demanding real change. We walk past the suffering. We walk past the deaths. We build fences so our children don’t see — but what are we teaching them?

That if someone dies on the street, we look the other way? That the solution to crisis is to hide it? That it's okay for someone’s son, daughter, mother, or friend to pass away in public and be treated like an inconvenience?

God forbid it had been her child 10 or 15 years from now. God forbid it’s any of ours.

We need to wake up.

People experiencing homelessness and addiction are human beings. Their lives are not less valuable because they're on the margins. Their deaths are not acceptable casualties of the housing crisis, the poisoned drug supply, or broken social systems.

We cannot fence away this pain. We cannot parent our kids through this with just compassion alone. We need justice, housing, treatment, dignity, and truth.

If we keep covering it up instead of healing it, this city has no soul left.

We should not be debating fencing.
We should be screaming for help — not for ourselves, but for every person we've walked past, every body we’ve ignored, and every system that let this happen.

Today, with a heavy heart, I join many in mourning the tragic death of Matthew Hutchings, a 20-year-old UBC student whose life was cut short far too soon. His body was found near the SkyTrain tracks by Commercial-Broadway Station on May 29, 2025.

This is a heartbreaking loss — one that shakes our community and leaves deep questions, grief, and anger in its wake.

Matthew mattered. He was someone’s son, someone’s friend, someone who had dreams, plans, and love to give. His disappearance gripped many with concern. And now that concern has turned into sorrow — and for many of us, rage.

I write this not just in mourning, but in frustration.
Because just two weeks ago, I saw something disturbing near the SkyTrain tracks — a man lying on his back, his friends watching helplessly or high, the scene full of pain and danger. I tried to report it to TransLink. They told me to call police. They were rude. I was shaken. And now I wonder...

Did I witness someone dying? Did I witness Matthew — or someone like him — in their last moments?

We may never know.
But I do know this: it’s not enough to say “no foul play suspected.” When someone dies from toxic drugs, that is foul play. When someone lies helpless on the ground and the system doesn’t respond, that’s a crime. When our society allows people — especially youth, especially Indigenous women, especially the vulnerable — to die silently near public transit stations, alone and ignored, that’s a failure.

Matthew deserved better.

We owe it to him — and to every soul lost in this poisoned, indifferent world — to say their names. To see them. To speak out. And to demand that compassion, support, and justice no longer be optional.

Rest in Power, Matthew.
You will not be forgotten.

 Facing the Devil in His Final Hours

A Reflection on Power, Legacy, and Unfinished Truths

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday—a day symbolic of resurrection and hope. But for many of us, the feelings are more complicated.

His passing marks the end of a papacy that, while progressive in tone, still carries the heavy shadows of a Church deeply entwined with colonialism, abuse, and generational trauma.

I’m not a fan of Catholicism. In fact, I’ve spent years stepping away from the institution and all the damage it’s done—especially here in so-called Canada. The legacy of the Residential Schools haunts us. Survivors and families are still fighting for truth, justice, and healing. And let’s be real: while Pope Francis did apologize and call it a genocide, it took far too long.

Still, he was different.

Francis stood apart in key ways. He spoke openly about inequality, climate change, and the rights of the poor. He softened the Church’s tone on LGBTQ+ issues and took stands that infuriated the far right. He tried to shift the Church’s focus from power and doctrine to mercy and care. And for that, many—inside and outside the Church—respected him.

Which makes what happened in his final hours all the more disturbing.

Just before his death, Pope Francis met with J.D. Vance—U.S. Vice President, a figure whose politics embody cruelty, nationalism, and the very ideologies the Pope spent years warning us about. Why was he granted a private audience at the end? Why was the last global leader Francis met someone who has vilified migrants, fanned hate, and pushed policies that hurt the vulnerable?

It feels like Francis, in his frailty, had to face the very forces he fought against—maybe even a final symbolic confrontation with everything he stood for. And I can’t help but wonder if it stole his last bit of strength.

Let’s be honest: the Church still owes us more than apologies. It owes truth, reparations, and a complete reckoning. Francis made some steps toward that—but the institution remains broken. And now, without him, what direction will it take?

His death doesn’t absolve the Church. But it does mark the end of a rare moment when someone inside tried to steer it toward justice, even while carrying centuries of guilt.

Rest in peace, Francis. May the next chapter bring more courage, more truth, and real change. We’re still watching.

Justice for Florence: A Call for Accountability and Reform

 The tragic death of Florence Girard, a 54-year-old woman with Down syndrome, is a sobering reminder of the systemic failures in British Columbia's care system. Florence starved to death in 2018 while under the care of a home-share provider, Astrid Dahl, who failed to provide even the most basic necessities of life. At the time of her death, Florence weighed just over 50 pounds and had not seen a doctor in over four years.

Despite being convicted of "failing to provide the necessaries of life," Dahl served no jail time. Instead, she received a conditional sentence to be served in the community—a punishment that many, including Florence’s family, find grossly inadequate.

Neglect is Abuse

Neglecting to provide medical care, proper nutrition, or even basic attention to someone in your care is a form of abuse. In Florence’s case, it was fatal. The fact that Dahl failed to take Florence to the doctor for years while her health visibly declined is nothing short of criminal. Yet the justice system treated this gross negligence as a lesser offense.

What message does this send to other caregivers? That the lives of vulnerable individuals like Florence are not valued? That neglect, even when it leads to death, has no real consequences?

Systemic Failures

The failure doesn’t stop with one individual. Florence was part of a home-share program overseen by Kinsight Community Society, which was contracted by Community Living BC (CLBC). This system, designed to support adults with developmental disabilities, failed to monitor her care adequately. Reports indicate that Kinsight had no contact with Florence for at least eight months before her death. This lack of oversight is unacceptable and points to deeper issues within the care system.

How many more vulnerable people are at risk because of understaffing, lack of funding, and inadequate accountability? Florence’s death is a chilling reminder that these systemic issues must be addressed immediately.

Justice for Florence

Florence Girard deserved better. She deserved care, compassion, and dignity. Her death should not be in vain. Justice for Florence means more than holding one individual accountable—it means demanding systemic reform to ensure this never happens again.

Here’s what needs to change:

1. Stronger Sentencing: Neglect that leads to death must be met with meaningful consequences. Without accountability, negligence will continue unchecked.
2. Improved Oversight: Programs like home-share must have regular, unannounced inspections and follow-ups to ensure the well-being of those in care.
3. Adequate Funding: Organizations like CLBC must receive the resources they need to properly monitor and support caregivers.
4. Advocacy for Change: The public must push for legislative reforms that prioritize the safety and dignity of vulnerable individuals.

A Call to Action

Florence’s sister, Sharon Bursey, has been outspoken about the need for change, saying, “There’s all of these protocols and handbooks and rules, but it doesn’t seem like any of them are being followed.” She’s right. Rules mean nothing if they aren’t enforced, and vulnerable lives depend on us demanding better.

Let’s make sure Florence’s story is heard. Share this post, write to your local representatives, and support advocacy groups calling for accountability and reform. Justice for Florence isn’t just about her—it’s about protecting every vulnerable individual who depends on the care of others.

 I saw a disturbing post about the world being on the brink of nuclear war and Nazi's in the streets....sound familiar...only this wasn't in the past ...it's right now...this weekend.

STOP!! Right now....
Look at the state of the world and think well about the future you want for yourself, your families and those you love.

Do not let history repeat. Practice love. Teach Love! Love yourself, your family, your neighbour, love the differences. Never embrace hate, greed or ignorance or this will be our fate. Watch this film from 1952.. it was made 10 years before I was born. I saw it in grade 5. It was shocking and imprinted deeply...but it would take years before I realized it.

My friend from San Francisco visited last week and he just loved Vancouver. He  thought it was paradise. So clean and pretty..so GREEN!

We are blessed. I haven't actually ridden around  STANLEY PARK  yet this year...need to get my bike fixed but I do love it there. As well as the millions of others that have visited.

“I am outraged and deeply saddened by the news that so many have been killed and injured in terrorist attacks targeting the people of Brussels, Belgium.
“Sophie and I join all Canadians in extending our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those killed. We also hope for a fast recovery to all those who have been injured.
“Canada stands by Belgium in this difficult time and has offered all possible assistance. We will continue to work closely with our allies and the international community to help fight and prevent terrorism here and abroad, and to bring to justice those who are responsible for planning and carrying out these senseless acts.

National Crime Records Bureau says over 200,00 farmers in Punjab have committed suicide since 1997 due to the fact that they are heavily in debt and unable to repay their lenders. 

Punjabi farmers are also going through a water crisis in which the Indian government has restricted water rights for irrigation, making it extremely inefficient and expensive for farmers to maintain their crops and land.

The Government has also allowed for the usage of unregulated pesticides and fertilizers to counterbalance the low productivity resulting in major health problems in the people of Punjab.
