My Whale Murals- Kitsilano

Whale of Tale - Mural by Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

Tina Winterlik (Zipolita) – Artist Bio

Tina Winterlik, also known as Zipolita, is a Vancouver-based artist, photographer, and storyteller whose work lives at the intersection of resilience, nature, and human connection. With a background in digital imaging, photography, and social media storytelling, Tina has spent years documenting both beauty and truth—often turning her lens toward the overlooked, the misunderstood, and the deeply human.

Her creative path has never been separate from her lived experience. Through personal challenges, shifting economies, and a changing city, Tina continues to create with what is available—transforming simple materials into meaningful expressions. Whether through writing, photography, or painting, her work carries a consistent message: that even in difficult times, there is still connection, still kindness, still something worth protecting.

On the Murals – A Story from the Seawall

Yesterday reminded me why I keep going.

Lately, I’ve been writing about difficult things—heavy things. But out there, on the seawall, something entirely different happened.

Person after person stopped to talk to me. Not just passing by—but really stopping. They told me how much they loved the murals. How they look forward to seeing them. How they noticed when one had been damaged. How sorry they were that someone painted over parts of them… even writing something as harsh as “Nuke the whales.”

That one hurt.

But what stayed with me more was the kindness that followed. The words people took the time to say. The care. The encouragement. Honestly, it felt overwhelming—in the best way. Like medicine I didn’t even realize I needed.

If I ever feel low again, I know where to go.

There’s one piece in particular—the old log on the beach.

Last year, it was almost chopped up. I remember being there when people found out. There was a real sense of loss, like something important was about to disappear. But that log isn’t just driftwood—it feels like an old warrior. It has held its place through storms, tides, and time. It protects more than it harms. It belongs there.

And now, it holds art too.

One man who stopped to talk told me his son used to be a tagger. That could have been a tense conversation—but it wasn’t. It turned into something thoughtful and real. We talked about how expensive spray paint is, and how toxic—not just for the environment, but for the people using it.

We even talked about artists like Emily Carr and Vincent van Gogh, and how in their time, they were exposed to harmful chemicals in their paints—things we understand differently now.

It made me feel grateful for my own process.

Most of my materials come from simple places—$2 bottles of paint, brushes from Dollarama. For about $20 and a few hours of work, I painted a whale that’s still in progress… but already alive in its own way.

There’s something freeing about that. No gatekeepers. No expensive setup. Just time, effort, and care.

Some of the murals are in places that are hard to reach—ledges I have to carefully climb up and down. It’s not easy. But maybe that’s part of why they’ve lasted.

From April through summer, into winter—through wind, rain, and salt air—they’ve held up. Not perfectly, but beautifully. There’s wear, yes. But there’s also strength in that. Like they’ve lived.

Yesterday reminded me of something simple but powerful:

People care.

Not everyone—but enough.

Enough to stop. Enough to speak. Enough to see.

And right now, that means everything.

Franklin the Turtle Deserves Better — Not to Be Turned Into a Weapon

🐢 Franklin the Turtle Deserves Better — Not to Be Turned Into a Weapon

I’m 62, so Franklin wasn’t part of my childhood. I grew up on CBC classics — The Friendly Giant, Mr. Dressup, Sesame Street, The Electric Company — gentle shows that taught kindness, creativity, and imagination. Those were the programs that shaped my early world.

But when I had my child at 40, they grew up with Franklin the Turtle. And Franklin quickly became one of the loveliest shows in our home. The animation was warm and beautiful, the stories simple but meaningful, and Franklin himself was everything we want children’s characters to be: kind, thoughtful, gentle, honest.

So when the U.S. Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted a meme of Franklin dressed in military gear, firing a weapon at a boat — without permission from the publisher — I felt disgusted. And yes, furious.

Franklin is not a weapon.
Franklin is not a mascot for violence.
Franklin is a symbol of childhood safety.

To twist him into a tool of political messaging during a moment when real people have died in U.S. military strikes is shocking, disrespectful, and deeply out of line. The publisher condemned it because it goes against everything Franklin stands for — and as a parent who watched those gentle lessons with my child, I agree completely.

Children’s characters are sacred spaces.
They teach empathy, not aggression.
They soothe, they comfort, they help little minds grow.

Taking a character built on kindness and turning him into propaganda is not clever — it’s disturbing. It shows how numb society is becoming to violence, how quickly innocence gets co-opted for shock value or political stuntwork.

Franklin — like Friendly Giant, like Mr. Dressup, like all the characters who shaped generations — deserves better. And so do the kids who grew up loving him.

🐢💛 Keep children’s characters out of warfare.
Let Franklin stay who he was: a gentle friend, not a fighter.

"Greed has poisoned men’s souls, has barricaded the world with hate, has goose-stepped us into misery and bloodshed. We have developed speed, but we have shut ourselves in. Machinery that gives abundance has left us in want. Our knowledge has made us cynical. Our cleverness, hard and unkind. We think too much and feel too little. More than machinery we need humanity. More than cleverness we need kindness and gentleness. Without these qualities, life will be violent and all will be lost...."

"You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure."

Have You Heard of Peace Prayer Flag Project

#PeacePrayerFlagProject
Peace Prayer Flag Creation & Photography by Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita © 2015

Peace Prayer Flag Creation & Photography by Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita © 2015

Well  I just created it, so you may not have heard of it. Maybe others have created similar but this is my twist on it. You've heard of Tibet Prayer Flags, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prayer_flag

"A prayer flag is a colorful rectangular cloth, often found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside and for other purposes. Prayer flags are believed to have originated with Bon.[1] In Bon, shamanistic Bonpo used primary-colored plain flags in healing ceremonies in Nepal. They are unknown in other branches of Buddhism.[2] Traditional prayer flags include woodblock-printed text and images."

And it's made by pressing an inked wooden block on to material.
I have a whole PINTEREST BOARD if you want to see.  https://www.pinterest.com/zipolita/prayer-flags/

And have you heard of the Kindest Flag Project- Well it's a cool project that sprung up after the  Stanley Cup Riots. http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2011/06/kindness-flag-project.html

It started when this woman  Ingrid Tamboline, decided to help give the people cleaning up and passing through the area damaged by the rioters, the opportunity for healing. It was very emotional for us and I am very grateful for Ingrid thoughtfulness and ingenuity. https://kindnessflagproject.wordpress.com/about-3/

Angel's Kindness flag- a Peace Sign with a heart - surrounded by hearts!
So after the attacks in Paris and then just the pain and grief that goes with the realization that ALL OVER THE WORLD right now there is TERRIBLE things happening to people but ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN. http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2015/11/did-you-ever-charlie-wilsons-war-or.html

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2015/11/i-tell-you-love-sister-its-just-kiss.html

The fact that France went back in and bombed and Canada and the US, it makes me very ill and unhappy and I feel powerless. But I do have power, we all do. Peace starts with YOU!!

So my idea was born the other night when I got this idea to make little PEACE PRAYER FLAGS and just make a garland for my Christmas tree but somehow the idea has morphed into this fabulous idea of sharing LOVE and PEACE with EVERYONE AND UNITING US with our little PEACE PRAYER FLAGS!!

I am a bit tired, I have been working on this non stop since the other day and I need to rest and write this all out properly and give it it's own site and all but right now this is what I have.

Here are 2 videos and I hope to go out on Saturday for an hour to see what peoples react to my idea is and how they perceive it all. I started an Esty site but I don't know if I am going to get it set up.

See below videos.

Small Miracles have Huge Impact!!

It's a GREAT DAY! Today something SPECIAL AND WONDERFUL happened. One of Angel's teachers brought us a Christmas hamper! Yay!!! Full of lots of wonderful yummy healthy treats. HOW AWESOME! and two gifts.

That was so sweet and so appreciated as we REALLY NEEDED IT!  I'm feeling much happier today. I feel loved and the outlook on life is much brighter today.

Then I read this SUPER WONDERFUL STORY about people paying off lay away plans at Kmart. http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/1103024 You just have to read this, it had me balling like a baby. It revives your faith in mankind when people do beautiful things like this. Like it says in the story, sometimes $50 doesn't seem like much but it can be a million when given to the right person at the right time.

I hope lots of people get the help they need and we can all Share this Wonderful Christmas Joy. Right now my girl is putting together a gingerbread house...something we might not have gotten considering things...it's these little things that bring so much joy but when cash is short...it's a choice that or milk...

Thank you to people who love and care about others and for making efforts. We didn't ask, someone just did that. Thanks Ms.M. We love you!! We love everyone and wish you all a Merry Christmas!

Kindness Flag Project Inspired by Ingrid
Location: Vancouver Public Library
Time: ‎2:00PM Saturday, June 18th
From Ingrid Tamboline
 From Ingrid Tamboline,
To the amazing people who helped in more ways than I could possibly describe, THANK YOU! To Guy, Janice, Marie, Iman, Neil and the many others whose names I sadly cannot remember, thank you! Today I had a little idea and took a chance to see if anyone wanted to participate, and within minutes it exploded into a creative force. People WANTED to make something and and set in motion acts of creation to offset the senseless acts of destruction we experienced the other night. People shared the few paints, brushes and pens I had. They helped each other out, they collectively made flags with words and images of loving kindness. They were incredibly kind and generous to me. THIS is Vancouver! THIS is our city! Thank you, hooligans! Because of you, Vancouverites and visitors to our beautiful city have a common goal, and that is to transform anger, hostility and destruction into happiness, kindness and creation. You've reminded us of the importance to be kind. Thank you!

And once again, a million thank yous to everyone who participated and has helped or offered to help. This is your project, and it's wonderful!

Ingrid

The Kindness Flag Project

So glad we made the effort and walked downtown yesterday. (Something was telling me we had to go)  We were just going to look at the wall and add some little gold hearts with a heart shaped sponge and some gold paint.

Angel saw them making Kindness Flags and we made one too! It was really nice. It was a wonderful healing artistic expression of love for ourselves and the city.

Art Therapy- an awesome tool for when your grieving, and seriously we are going thru a type of grief. Shock, dismay, post traumatic stress, all these things we carry around as we watched that night, and as we still are seeing shocking video at the insane behavior by many people, our youth!

But it doesn't represent all youth or the people of Vancouver.

There are many fabulous kind people in this world and we have a choice, to chose to live in Love or Fear. Which do you chose?

By choosing love and participating yesterday we began our healing process. I created a little film from the photos I took of the wall and all the flags, and it really is a Beautiful Celebration of Kindness and Love and Peace

The Kindness Flag Project

The Kindness Flag Project
Let's Create love and peace and help the healing of our grand city.

Today Ingrid Tamboline decided she needed to do something, so she took a table and art supplies and sat outside of the Bay and gave people the chance to voice their love and support for the people of Vancouver.

Lets help her make it an even bigger show of kindness!

Come down and make a flag.
Make one at home and bring it down
If you want to bring supplies, Great!
Teachers - have your students make flags and put them up!

Post pictures of the beauty of love and your flags!

It is quite amazing to be standing among like minded people who just want love, peace and acceptance.

Lets show the world who we truly are!!!
