Suzanne Valadon: From Muse to Master

Suzanne Valadon: From Muse to Master — The Bold Life of a Trailblazing Artist

By Zipolita (Tina Winterlik)

I recently came across a powerful video that reignited my fascination with a revolutionary female painter — Suzanne Valadon. Her life story reads like a novel: full of passion, resilience, and artistic brilliance. Here’s a deeper look at this incredible woman who defied convention and carved her own space in the male-dominated world of art.

Who Was Suzanne Valadon?

Born Marie-Clémentine Valadon in 1865 in Montmartre, Paris, Suzanne came from humble beginnings. Before she ever picked up a paintbrush, she worked as a circus acrobat, nanny, and artist's model. She modeled for giants like Renoir, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Degas — learning by watching them work.

But Valadon didn’t stay in the background. She stepped out from muse to master painter, becoming the first woman admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1894.

Her Art: Real, Raw, and Radiant

Valadon’s work is known for its vibrant colors, bold outlines, and a fearless portrayal of women. Unlike the idealized nudes painted by men, her female figures are strong, real, and unapologetic. She painted from life — bodies with stretch marks, emotional expressions, women lost in thought or deeply present in their own space.

Top 5 Must-See Suzanne Valadon Paintings

  • The Blue Room (1923)
A woman lounges in striped pajamas, smoking a cigarette. Books and patterns fill the room.
    Where: Centre Pompidou, Paris.
Why it matters: A radical challenge to the typical nude — here the woman owns her space, clothed and confident.
  • Adam and Eve (1909)
A provocative double nude featuring Suzanne and her younger lover André Utter as the biblical pair.
    Where: Musée National d’Art Moderne.
Why it matters: A symbolic and deeply personal take on love, age, and freedom.
  • Portrait of Maurice Utrillo (1921)
A portrait of her son Maurice, who became a well-known painter despite his struggles with alcoholism.
Why it matters: A heartfelt depiction of her complex role as a single mother and mentor.
  • Joy of Life (1911)
Vibrant, earthy nudes frolic in nature.
Why it matters: A bold, female-driven response to the male gaze in traditional art.
  • Self-Portrait (1898)
Her direct, assertive gaze challenges viewers.
Why it matters: One of the first female self-portraits accepted by the French art establishment.

Why She Still Inspires Today

Suzanne Valadon lived boldly. She loved who she loved, painted what she saw, and refused to be silenced. In a time when women were often denied artistic agency, she claimed it — fiercely. Her legacy reminds us that creativity knows no gender, and courage makes space where there once was none.

If you’ve never seen her art before, now’s the time. Let her bold brushstrokes and powerful figures speak to you. Suzanne Valadon isn’t just part of art history — she’s a woman who rewrote it.

Reclaiming HBC’s Legacy in BC

Indigenous-Led Businesses & Projects Reclaiming HBC’s Legacy in BC

1. The Vancouver HBC Store Reclamation – Tsawwassen First Nation & SFU Partnership

  • In 2022, the Hudson’s Bay building in downtown Vancouver was sold to an Indigenous-led development group.
  • The plan is to transform the space into a cultural, business, and educational hub that supports Indigenous economic sovereignty.
  • This marks a major shift, as land once used for colonial trade is now in the hands of Indigenous leaders.

2. Mobilize Waskawewin (Fashion & Activism)

  • Mobilize Waskawewin is an Indigenous-led fashion collective that reclaims the infamous HBC blanket.
  • They redesign the blankets into powerful fashion statements, challenging their colonial history while celebrating Indigenous strength.
  • Their work represents cultural reclamation—turning a symbol of colonialism into one of resistance and pride.

3. Indigenous Artists Reclaiming HBC Symbols

  • KC Adams (Métis) – Incorporates HBC imagery in art to critique its role in colonization.
  • Kent Monkman (Cree) – Uses HBC blankets in paintings to highlight Indigenous survival.
  • Sonny Assu (Kwakwaka'wakw) – Reworks colonial artifacts, including HBC symbols, into modern Indigenous storytelling.

4. The Land Back Movement & Indigenous-Led Economic Growth

  • The Squamish Nation's Sen̓áḵw Project in Vancouver is one of Canada’s largest Indigenous-led housing developments, symbolizing economic resurgence.
  • Many Indigenous nations in BC are actively reclaiming land that was once controlled by HBC and other colonial institutions.

How You Can Support & Share Indigenous Perspectives

  • Feature Indigenous artists and businesses on your blog and social media.
  • Promote Indigenous-owned brands that are reclaiming HBC imagery in ethical ways.
  • Encourage readers to support Indigenous-led land reclamation efforts.

I wanted to show you the auctions
https://zipolita.com/auctions/

I will have a new auction start at the beginning of each month. I will add new ideas during the month so be sure to check back. All auctions will end at the end of each month and items will not be re-offered for a while, if at all, so if you want something be sure to get in there.
Right now I have 2 ballerina paintings that would look lovely in a dancer's room, studio, or store.

I am also working hard on sales and so I will have lot of cool things to buy.
Right now I have some super cute tiny little bird houses, not sure a bird could actually go in, it is more for fun.

Anyways if you are looking for super cool little gifts for grads, wedding, birthdays check it out and in a bit I am going to be tying them altogether with my favorite environmental causes such as the #SaveMyCoast, #StopSiteC #StopKM #FishFarmGetOut  and try and help them out and myself. My hope is to raise enough funds that I can take my daughter traveling for 6 months and learn more about our roots. I want to immerse ourselves in culture. https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2017/05/will-you-help-us-immerse-ourselves-in.html
Stay tuned.

These photos & video were inspired by The REDress Project - created by Jaime Black. I took these photos to help raise awareness and keep the spotlight on the #MMIW

http://www.theredressproject.org/
The REDress Project, focuses around the issue of missing or murdered Aboriginal women across Canada. It is an installation art project based on an aesthetic response to this critical national issue. The project seeks to collect 600 red dresses by community donation that will later be installed in public spaces throughout Winnipeg and across Canada as a visual reminder of the staggering number of women who are no longer with us. Through the installation I hope to draw attention to the gendered and racialized nature of violent crimes against Aboriginal women and to evoke a presence through the marking of absence.

 Van Gogh 1881-12, Etten - Scheveningen Woman Sewing F 869 JH 83

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Vincent_van_Gogh

"Van Gogh painted this self-portrait in the winter of 1887–1888, when he had been living in Paris for nearly two years. Since his arrival in the city he had devoted much study to the dotted Pointillist technique, thereby learning how he might apply it in his own fashion. His use of brushstrokes running in a variety of directions created a self-portrait with a halo-like circle round his head. This variation and the dynamics it created were Van Gogh’s own contribution to the new style of painting." (Van Gogh Museum notice)

I just learned of Jazmin's sweet works of art the other day, when someone shared this video on Fb. I love them so much, the video is very well done too. Very touching! They really make you smile!

"Both whimsical and poignant, her work depicts women in everyday life and explores themes around friendship, intimacy and motherhood. Painting on large format canvases, Jazmin uses acrylics, oils & dry pastels. She then applies different media like glitters, metal leaves or molding paste to add texture and dimension to the pieces"
