I was born in 1962 — right into the heart of a revolution. Not the kind with flags and armies, but the kind that moves through music, laughter, long hair, and dreams of a better world.

My older sibling — twelve years ahead of me — loved the Beatles. I mean, who didn’t? They were lucky enough to see them live at the Vancouver Coliseum. Can you imagine? That energy, those screams, that magic. It left a mark on my childhood in the best possible way.

When I was about four or five, we all piled into a big ol’ Volkswagen Bug and drove to a drive-in theatre to watch HELP! Yes, the actual movie. It was wild, colourful, funny, and full of songs that would become the soundtrack of my life.

I grew up singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Love Me Do", and so many more. We said things like peace and love like it was just how people were supposed to be. And even as the Beatles evolved — got more political, more philosophical — I felt like I was evolving with them. Their music helped me question, grow, and even revolt when the world didn’t feel right.

And oh, Ringo. I had the biggest crush. He was the underdog — quirky, lovable, and sweet. In Help! they wanted to chop off his hand just because of the ring! 😬 But even then, he was so calm and adorable. I was hooked.

From "Revolution" to "Power to the People", from John to Paul to George and Ringo — the Beatles imprinted something deep in my soul: a belief that peace, love, and music really can change the world.

So here’s my ask — simple, small, but powerful.

Today, at noon — wherever you are — say “Peace and Love.”

Out loud. Whispered. Shouted. Sung. It doesn’t matter.

Different time zones? Doesn’t matter. Every hour, somewhere on this Earth, it will be noon. And every time someone says “Peace and Love,” we send a wave of light around the globe.

Please do it.
Do it now if you think you’ll forget.
It’s not silly.
It’s love.

Don’t blow it off. This is our world, and we can fill it with something better than fear, anger, or apathy.

It’s June 30th, 2026.

The skies are clear, but there’s no joy in the light. The sun beats down harder now—every season runs hotter than the last. The rivers run thinner. The cornfields in Kansas are cracked. The bees are gone. And so are half the clinics in Mississippi.

One year ago today, the United States passed what its architects called “The Big Beautiful Bill.” But history—and the world—will remember it by its true name: The Big Ugly Bill.

In that bill, $930 billion was carved out of the soul of the country—Medicaid, SNAP, environmental protections, public housing, school lunches—all gutted. And with that knife, the richest got richer, and the rest were told to "bootstrap harder."

What followed was not a collapse, but a slow crushing.

🇺🇸 In America: A Dismantled Future

Within six months, 18 million Americans lost their health coverage. Emergency rooms overflowed. Insulin became black market currency. Some turned to Mexico for medicine. Some just... didn’t make it.

A year ago, little Maisie in Ohio got a yearly check-up for free. Today, her mother must choose: rent or the pap smear that could catch the cancer early. She chooses rent. She always does.

Prison populations grew as poverty criminalized itself. Tent cities bloomed like open wounds across every major U.S. city. Suicide rates spiked. Disability applications soared—but approvals plummeted. Entire towns became forgotten.

And the hurricanes? They kept coming. But FEMA no longer had the budget to help.

🌎 The Shockwaves Beyond the Border

In Canada, we felt the tremors too.

When the U.S. slashed clean energy funding, oil barons doubled down. Carbon emissions surged. Alberta's wildfires swallowed whole towns again, this time earlier than ever. Vancouver's skies turned orange. We wore N95s in July.

Canadian ERs filled with American refugees—people crossing the border, sick, scared, bleeding, begging for a system that still believed health care was a right. But we were already stretched thin.

Global food prices rose as U.S. exports shriveled. Farmers in Guatemala watched their coffee crops rot without subsidy buyers. In Africa, famine zones grew where American aid once reached.

The Amazon, no longer protected by climate pacts the U.S. withdrew from, burned freely again.

Fish patterns changed. Coral bleached. Birds stopped returning.

And so did hope, for many.

🐾 The Animals Knew First

The whales stopped singing near the coast of Maine.

The wolves in Yellowstone, released from silent observation, began hunting closer to towns.

Deer wandered highways more often. More collisions. Fewer survivors.

The animals knew: the balance was broken.

🕊️ A Voice from the Ashes

From my little room in coastal BC, I watch it all. I document. I draw. I resist. I grieve.

And I remember how it happened: in silence, in back rooms, with clerks reading 900 pages aloud to mostly empty chairs. While the world slept. While senators bargained their souls for campaign cash. While citizens begged and were ignored.

We Canadians may not have voted in that bill. But we live on the same planet. And now, we live in its shadow.

⚠️ The Warning

This isn’t just an American tragedy. It’s a planetary one.

When one nation forgets compassion, others must double down on it.

So I write this to warn you.

If you're reading this in comfort—in power, with voice or platform or even just a pen—know this: we are not safe from indifference. We are not exempt from history. We are not immune from the collapse of empathy.

One year later, I whisper across the border: don’t let your country follow.

The Politics of Compromise: A Lesson from The Candidate

 

As we approach the upcoming elections in Canada, it's impossible not to reflect on how the political system can shape those who enter it. The 1972 film The Candidate, starring Robert Redford, offers a sobering look at the compromises politicians make as they climb the ranks. Redford's character, Bill McKay, starts with idealistic intentions but, as the campaign progresses, he finds himself trapped by the very system he hoped to reform—forced to make promises and strike deals that conflict with his original values.

This mirrors the reality for many politicians today, not just in Canada, but across the globe. Once in power, they often face a paradox: in order to secure their position, they must give up a part of themselves, their ideals, and their authenticity. The compromises become necessary to survive in the political game, but they can ultimately lead to disillusionment and a disconnect with the very people they promised to serve.

As election season approaches, it's important to reflect on the promises made by those seeking office. Will they stay true to their values, or will they too be shaped by the complex web of deals and compromises that politics demands? The mess of global politics today underscores the need for voters to critically examine not just what politicians say, but what they do once they’ve made it to the top.

As citizens, we have the power to hold them accountable—but we must be vigilant in recognizing when those promises are too far removed from the realities of governance.

" I don't mean monetary, I am talking about water...in a stream, ocean, river, not forced into pipes and dams and prison really. What have we done to water. :( :( Have you told the water lately that you "love it!" You should. It apparently has amazing healing and networking abilities and by telling it that it's loved, it will go out and heal any water it mixes with. Have I told you lately that "I love you". To those who can hear me, I say - do not despair. The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed - the bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress. The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish. .....

Soldiers! don’t give yourselves to brutes - men who despise you - enslave you - who regiment your lives - tell you what to do - what to think and what to feel! Who drill you - diet you - treat you like cattle, use you as cannon fodder. Don’t give yourselves to these unnatural men - machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines! You are not cattle! You are men! You have the love of humanity in your hearts! You don’t hate! Only the unloved hate - the unloved and the unnatural! Soldiers! Don’t fight for slavery! Fight for liberty!

In the 17th Chapter of St Luke it is written: “the Kingdom of God is within man” - not one man nor a group of men, but in all men! In you! You, the people have the power - the power to create machines. The power to create happiness! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful, to make this life a wonderful adventure.

Then - in the name of democracy - let us use that power - let us all unite. Let us fight for a new world - a decent world that will give men a chance to work - that will give youth a future and old age a security. By the promise of these things, brutes have risen to power. But they lie! They do not fulfil that promise. They never will!

Dictators free themselves but they enslave the people! Now let us fight to fulfil that promise! Let us fight to free the world - to do away with national barriers - to do away with greed, with hate and intolerance. Years ago....many many years ago, I went to a gym and I did aerobics...as everyone esle did at the time...I even joined a Jazz class...I wish I had kept going...I chickened out sadly. :(

But I was good at doing all the little routines and I think I could start slow...I love the idea of doing bellydancing. When I was 18 I remember going to a restaurant and saw the belly dancer and always thought how wonderful to be able to move like that.

So like this lady says...you get to some place in your life and you want to do more...

Show Your True Colours- Hang with Cyndi Lauper

I love Cyndi Lauper, We are actually the same age. :D I used to try and dress like her, my hair was cut like hers (sort of...  ;) I had her tapes and listened to them all the time, we would go out dancing and listen to her music.

Her wonderful fabulous powerful music that imprinted me and spoke to me so profoundly. It spoke of love and understanding, it had elements of protest and outrage but was soft and sweet.

Several studies have pointed to a link between climate change and the civil war in Syria, which started in 2011 and is still ongoing as of 2015. The direct causes of the conflict relate to popular discontent with the government. Yet the mishandling of a major drought in the preceding years likely fed into this discontent, and climate change increased the likelihood for such a drought.

We examine these dynamics by introducing the ECC Factbook -- a visual and interactive tool informing policy makers and the general public about conflicts with an environmental dimension.
