We need to talk. People are distracted. They’re scrolling, shopping, surviving — and while we look the other way, Hurricane Erick just hit the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico as a major hurricane. And it's not done.
🌊 Hurricanes Don’t Die — They Transform
Here’s something most people don’t understand: hurricanes don’t just disappear. They weaken, yes, but if the core stays intact and finds warm water again — like in the Gulf of Mexico — they can reform into new storms. That happened with Hurricane Agatha a few years ago. She came back as Alex and hit the U.S. East Coast.
Could that happen with Erick? It’s possible. It all depends on how much of its energy survives the trek across Mexico.
🛑 Why This Matters — Even If You Don’t Live in Mexico
People dismiss storms in Mexico because they think they won’t be affected. But they might be. If Erick reforms, it could bring floods, tornadoes, or storm surges to the U.S. South, East Coast, or even Canada — again.
And if it doesn’t reform, the moisture alone could fuel dangerous storms across North America.
🚨 What FEMA and Canadian Emergency Services Won’t Say (Yet)
Let’s be blunt. FEMA’s capacity has been slashed and undermined. Trump-era policy changes gutted it. If a big storm forms again and targets the U.S. Gulf Coast or Atlantic, how ready are we? Not very.
And Canada? We’re often lulled into thinking “it can’t happen here.” But it can. It already has. Eastern Canada felt storms like Fiona and Lee. Next could be remnants of Erick, or whatever it becomes.
👁️ Wake Up, Prepare, Care
We need to look south, not just in sympathy, but in solidarity. Because:
- People in Oaxaca are suffering now.
- The media barely reports it because it’s not the U.S.
- Climate change is making storms form faster, stronger, and with less warning.
Now is the time to prepare — check your emergency kits, talk to loved ones, charge devices, secure your property, and stay alert. Even if you're far away.
🇨🇦 A Note to Canadians
Many Canadians are boycotting the U.S. right now for moral and political reasons. That’s a whole other storm — but it matters. These are not normal times. We’re watching systems fail and spin, literally and figuratively. The only way through is together.
📣 Final Thoughts
Just because it’s not in your feed doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Just because it’s not in your backyard doesn’t mean it won’t reach you. And just because the storm has passed over one place doesn't mean the danger is over.
