I’m watching Hurricane Polo from Vancouver tonight, but my thoughts are down on the Pacific coast of Mexico — especially Oaxaca.

Polo has become a powerful hurricane while moving offshore, and although it is not currently expected to make a direct landfall in Oaxaca, the coast can still feel a storm like this through huge waves, dangerous surf, strong winds and heavy rain.

When I hear “Oaxaca coast,” I think of Puerto Escondido, Huatulco, Mazunte, San Agustinillo, Zipolite and all the little communities in between.

I’ve spent enough time there to know that the Pacific is both beautiful and powerful. The same ocean that brings those magnificent waves to Zipolite can become something entirely different during a hurricane.

So tonight I’m watching from Vancouver, checking the updates and thinking about the people, animals, homes, fishing boats, palapas and beaches along that coast.

Polo, please stay offshore. 🌊

And to everyone on Mexico’s Pacific coast — stay safe, listen to Protección Civil and respect the ocean.

Distance doesn't mean I don't worry about people and the place I love.
