The Soul of Zipolite: Beyond Elon Musk and Starlink

The Soul of Zipolite: Beyond Elon Musk and Starlink

By Tina Winterlik (Zipolita)

Response to GQ’s “How Elon Musk Changed Mexico’s Most Famous Nude Beach”

Read the GQ article here

Content note: This post discusses violence, crime, and loss. Please read with care.

Articles can capture a headline, but they can’t always hold a place’s soul. I lived in Zipolite. I heard the water trucks, I watched new pools fill while taps ran dry, and I felt the town shift under the weight of attention, technology, and money. This is my response — not to argue with anyone, but to witness what many of us saw and felt.

Water, Noise, and the Cost of “Comfort”

People bought property, put in swimming pools, and the truth is: there isn’t enough water. The pumping trucks are loud — a constant reminder that comfort for some is scarcity for others. My landlord had to order water to be pumped in. It’s not just noise pollution; it’s imbalance made audible.

When Violence Shatters the Illusion

Last year, terrible things happened. A crime ring. Young people went missing — they weren’t from there — and later a car was found with bodies inside, hands cut off. That’s not a rumor for tourists to trade; it’s pain a community carries.

A woman named Gabi — a Canadian from Calgary who’d lived there around ten years — was robbed, shot, and murdered driving home to Canada at night. We were acquaintances; we had exchanged social media info. Everyone knows the rule: never travel at night. But knowing a rule doesn’t undo grief.

What the Nudist Festival Was — and What It Became

The nudist festival was never meant to be sex tourism. Freedom without exploitation. But “anything goes” is not freedom — it’s disrespect. The shift hurt people, and it hurt the place. Old timers know exactly what I mean.

Gloria, Memory, and Meaning

Those who remember Gloria (de Shambhala) know she was part of the spirit of Zipolite. People say she’d be rolling in her grave to see what’s become of some parts of the beach — but she was cremated. The point remains: elders and founders held a line. When that line was crossed, something essential started to fray.

Playa del Amor, Agatha, and the Warnings We Ignore

A few years back, when orgies were happening at Playa del Amor, and after Gloria passed, Hurricane Agatha tore through and blew everything apart. I’ve said before (thinking of Deepak’s teachings): we are not outside of nature. This year, storms hit again. Whether you read that as climate reality, spiritual warning, or both — the message is clear: a place is not a toy.

“We are not outside of nature. When we forget that, nature has a way of reminding us.”

Tech Arrived — But at What Price?

Starlink brought connectivity. Yes, it opened doors for remote work and made it easier to stay in touch. But connection without caretaking can accelerate extraction: more speculation, higher rents, deeper divides. Not all change is progress when the roots are drying out.

What Respect Looks Like (For Visitors, Nomads, and Newcomers)

  • Water is sacred: Don’t build or fill what the aquifer can’t support. Conserve. Always.
  • Quiet has value: Think about generators, pumps, parties, and late-night noise. People live here.
  • Safety isn’t a rumor: Don’t travel at night. Don’t flash money. Don’t assume you’re invisible.
  • Consent & culture: The nudist tradition is about freedom with respect — not commodified sex tourism.
  • Give back: Pay fairly, hire locally, support community initiatives, ask what’s actually needed.

The Car, Pueblo, and a Line in the Sand

Even small symbols matter. When the car was moved up to the Pueblo, it felt like a message: “Don’t do that here.” Lines were being drawn, however quietly, to say: this place deserves care.

Why I’m Writing This

I love Zipolite. I always will. This isn’t about blaming one person or one company. It’s about saying out loud what many locals, workers, and long-timers know: if a place is treated like an endless resource or a playground, it breaks — first in spirit, then in body.

If you share this, please keep context intact. Out of respect for victims and families, avoid speculation and avoid naming individuals beyond what’s already public.

Peace and Love — A Call from the Heart of a Beatles Kid

🌍✨ Peace and Love — A Call from the Heart of a Beatles Kid ✨🌍

I was born in 1962 — right into the heart of a revolution. Not the kind with flags and armies, but the kind that moves through music, laughter, long hair, and dreams of a better world.

My older sibling — twelve years ahead of me — loved the Beatles. I mean, who didn’t? They were lucky enough to see them live at the Vancouver Coliseum. Can you imagine? That energy, those screams, that magic. It left a mark on my childhood in the best possible way.

When I was about four or five, we all piled into a big ol’ Volkswagen Bug and drove to a drive-in theatre to watch HELP! Yes, the actual movie. It was wild, colourful, funny, and full of songs that would become the soundtrack of my life.

I grew up singing "I Want to Hold Your Hand", "Love Me Do", and so many more. We said things like peace and love like it was just how people were supposed to be. And even as the Beatles evolved — got more political, more philosophical — I felt like I was evolving with them. Their music helped me question, grow, and even revolt when the world didn’t feel right.

And oh, Ringo. I had the biggest crush. He was the underdog — quirky, lovable, and sweet. In Help! they wanted to chop off his hand just because of the ring! 😬 But even then, he was so calm and adorable. I was hooked.

From "Revolution" to "Power to the People", from John to Paul to George and Ringo — the Beatles imprinted something deep in my soul: a belief that peace, love, and music really can change the world.

So here’s my ask — simple, small, but powerful.

Today, at noon — wherever you are — say “Peace and Love.”

Out loud. Whispered. Shouted. Sung. It doesn’t matter.

Different time zones? Doesn’t matter. Every hour, somewhere on this Earth, it will be noon. And every time someone says “Peace and Love,” we send a wave of light around the globe.

Please do it.
Do it now if you think you’ll forget.
It’s not silly.
It’s love.

Don’t blow it off. This is our world, and we can fill it with something better than fear, anger, or apathy.

🌸✌️💛
I send you peace and love.
– Tina aka Zipolita

Happy Birthday Ringo😁🤗😎🥰🤩🥳✌️♥️

Never Turn Your Back on a Wave

🌊 Never Turn Your Back on a Wave

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita
📍 July 2025

A hurricane just tore through Zipolite and Huatulco. Its name was Erick. It spun up out of nowhere and became a monster in 24 hours — not even time to breathe. Floods, landslides, people cut off, infrastructure washed away.

Then — poof — it’s “downgraded,” no longer a hurricane. The media drops it. But the storm didn’t stop. It carried on — across Mexico, into Texas, where more than 30 people died in catastrophic flash floods around the Guadalupe River. Most people didn’t even know the storms were connected.

Because the system is broken.

🌍 We Are Not Islands

When the storm leaves Mexico, Mexico breathes a sigh of relief: “Thank God it's gone.”
But does the U.S. care? Not really.
And when the leftovers crawl toward Canada? Crickets.

There’s no real cooperation. No shared system that tracks a storm from birth to death. Everyone is busy with their own borders and bureaucracy. The U.S. cuts the EPA, the NOAA gets slashed, the satellites aren't maintained — and everyone wonders why we didn’t see it coming.

But we did.

We just weren’t listening.
We weren’t talking to each other.
And some people don’t want us to — because when we know the truth, we demand better.

💥 The EPA Was Gutted — And It Matters

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) once helped track pollution, protect clean water, and warn about ecological collapse. But under past U.S. leadership, it was stripped down, scientists silenced, and climate programs slashed.

What happens when you fire the experts?
When you muzzle the people sounding alarms?
When you say climate change is fake while the skies fall?

You get people swept away in rivers.
You get mudslides burying towns.
You get hurricanes that nobody tracks from one country to the next.
You get a global system acting like a bunch of strangers in the dark.

🌀 “Never Turn Your Back on a Wave”

I have a saying. It comes from the beach — from life:

Never turn your back on a wave.
Because that wave might just splash you,
maybe even smack you on the butt and make you laugh —
but it might just as easily knock your legs out,
slam you into the sand, and break your neck before you even know what happened.

That’s what these storms are like.
They don’t care about politics.
They don’t care about state lines.
They don’t care about your forecast app.

They’ll build in the tropics,
explode over the ocean,
rip through poor communities,
and then travel thousands of kilometers inland to flood your home —
long after the name is gone and the news cycle has moved on.

🧠 What Needs to Change?

  • We need to track storms through their whole lifespan, not just while they’re “official.”
  • We need cross-border coordination between Mexico, the U.S., and Canada.
  • We need to restore the EPA, fund climate science, and respect Indigenous knowledge about weather and land.
  • We need to wake up before the next wave drags us under.

This isn’t just about hurricanes.
It’s about how disconnected we’ve become — from each other, from the Earth, from the truth.

We have to do better.
Because the wave is coming — whether we’re watching or not.

🌀 Stay aware. Stay connected. Never turn your back on a wave.

Hurricane Erick Isn’t Over Yet — And Neither Are the Storms To Come

🌪️ Hurricane Erick Isn’t Over Yet — And Neither Are the Storms To Come

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

We need to talk. People are distracted. They’re scrolling, shopping, surviving — and while we look the other way, Hurricane Erick just hit the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico as a major hurricane. And it's not done.

🌊 Hurricanes Don’t Die — They Transform

Here’s something most people don’t understand: hurricanes don’t just disappear. They weaken, yes, but if the core stays intact and finds warm water again — like in the Gulf of Mexico — they can reform into new storms. That happened with Hurricane Agatha a few years ago. She came back as Alex and hit the U.S. East Coast.

Could that happen with Erick? It’s possible. It all depends on how much of its energy survives the trek across Mexico.

🛑 Why This Matters — Even If You Don’t Live in Mexico

People dismiss storms in Mexico because they think they won’t be affected. But they might be. If Erick reforms, it could bring floods, tornadoes, or storm surges to the U.S. South, East Coast, or even Canada — again.

And if it doesn’t reform, the moisture alone could fuel dangerous storms across North America.

🚨 What FEMA and Canadian Emergency Services Won’t Say (Yet)

Let’s be blunt. FEMA’s capacity has been slashed and undermined. Trump-era policy changes gutted it. If a big storm forms again and targets the U.S. Gulf Coast or Atlantic, how ready are we? Not very.

And Canada? We’re often lulled into thinking “it can’t happen here.” But it can. It already has. Eastern Canada felt storms like Fiona and Lee. Next could be remnants of Erick, or whatever it becomes.

👁️ Wake Up, Prepare, Care

We need to look south, not just in sympathy, but in solidarity. Because:

  • People in Oaxaca are suffering now.
  • The media barely reports it because it’s not the U.S.
  • Climate change is making storms form faster, stronger, and with less warning.

Now is the time to prepare — check your emergency kits, talk to loved ones, charge devices, secure your property, and stay alert. Even if you're far away.

🇨🇦 A Note to Canadians

Many Canadians are boycotting the U.S. right now for moral and political reasons. That’s a whole other storm — but it matters. These are not normal times. We’re watching systems fail and spin, literally and figuratively. The only way through is together.

📣 Final Thoughts

Just because it’s not in your feed doesn’t mean it’s not happening. Just because it’s not in your backyard doesn’t mean it won’t reach you. And just because the storm has passed over one place doesn't mean the danger is over.

Stay aware. Stay connected. Stay compassionate.

Hurricane Erick: Unprecedented Strength and Deep Concern

Hurricane Erick: Unprecedented Strength and Deep Concern

⚠️ Latest Update: June 19, 2025

Hurricane Erick made landfall along the coast of Oaxaca as a Category 3 storm after rapidly intensifying to Category 4 offshore. Experts say this is one of the fastest recorded intensifications in Pacific hurricane history.

🌪️ Eye near Puerto Ángel: At one point, the eye of the storm was clearly visible just offshore from Puerto Ángel. Winds peaked at 140 km/h (87 mph) before dropping slightly to 119 km/h (74 mph)—still strong enough to cause severe damage.

🚫 Power outages: There is currently no electricity in many coastal areas, and power is not expected to return for at least three days.

🌍 Global concern: Friends in Oaxaca City, Texas, and beyond are deeply worried. We are staying in touch however we can to check on loved ones and the region.

🛰️ Satellite imagery shows the storm’s massive size and highly organized structure, underscoring how serious and far-reaching this system is.

📉 Unprecedented intensification: Erick strengthened from a tropical storm to a Category 4 hurricane in less than 24 hours—an alarming sign connected to unusually warm ocean waters and climate change.

🙏 Hoping for safety for all affected. If you have family or friends in Oaxaca, please stay tuned to updates and check in with them when possible. Share this post to raise awareness.

Zipolite's Embrace

 Zipolite's Embrace

by Tina Winterlik with help of AI

From the Blog Adventurez in Mexico

https://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.com

In Oaxaca's heart, Zipolite lies,

With crashing surf and tranquil skies.

A laid-back haven by the sea,

A perfect place to simply be.

International souls gather here,

For days, weeks, months, they hold dear.

Locals lovely, warm and kind,

A gentle peace you'll surely find.

Always something, yet nothing much,

A mellow rhythm, a soothing touch.

Visit Shambhala, taste the fare,

Views that take you everywhere.

Don't miss Meditation Loma's crest,

Sunset paints the sky its best.

Zipolite calls, with calm and grace,

A sanctuary, a peaceful space.

New Year’s Celebration- Shambhala- Zipolite, Oaxaca Mexico

I have been.
I've been blessed.
That is how I felt after attending this truly beautiful ceremony. It touched my heart, my soul. I was so blessed my child and I could attend together. Even more blessed to know Gloria and Shambhala.

I am missing it tonight. I makes me sad. I know the momentous task that they all take on every year preparing the flowers, crowns, the decorations, food and just everything that goes into preparing this and on very little funds. I seriously do not know how Gloria makes it happen every year. She is AMAZING!

It's magic. Miracles make it happen or maybe we should say it's a MIRACLE! After you have been, that's what it feels like...like you have been blessed with miracles.

Every year I plan to get back but it isn't happening tonight...
As I write this from Kitsilano, Vancouver Canada,  the snow is really coming down.

So I send you love and light and pray that next year I will join you and that 2017 is a beautiful year, with love and many victories for peace and the environment.

And for you, I ask that you take a moment and send back the love they are generating tonight and let's heal this cRaZy mixed up world...for our children, and our children's children.

Happy New Year!!
Sending out love, light and peace!
Thank you Gloria!! Thank you!!

New Year’s Celebration

Our celebration consists of a ceremony to CLEAN OUR SPIRITS. Our true being is a pure spirit and this night we will try to give total expression to our humanity, united in LOVE AND PEACE. This is an offering to God: The Divine Intelligence.

We have chosen the essence of each philosophy and religion of the world. Because each of them has his own truth we respect.

The symbol of our soul is the flower, and we bring it to the fire with all the negativity that we have inside us in the form of a tree of life that we will construct during celebration.

Help Shambhala Vision Raise $2000-

I have copied this from the Shambhala Vision Facebook page. Please visit it and see the photos of the devastation  https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.263100920460652.47568.250304258406985&type=1 for yourself. They are trying to raise $2000. Every little bit helps. PLEASE HELP!

Shambhala- devastated by Hurricane Carlotta. Please Help!!

Dear friends! Shambhala is soggy and and battered, but recovering slowly. Power, water and cellular service have been restored, and we've just had our first 24hrs without rain. We are cleaning and repairing as best we can. Every square foot of Shambhala inside and out was covered with crud, and everything got wet. Two cabanas were completely destroyed, and most of the other roofs have problems and are leaking. almost all the mattrasses are damp, and there are mountains of laundry to do, but it is difficult with the rain. Hopefully we have some more sun so we can dry things out a bit, but the rain never goes away for long.

To the people who have forwarded us money, thank you!! We have raised 4000 pesos so far and that money is going directly into relief efforts. We've bought nails, hinges, and other hardware, cleaning supplies, and some much-needed groceries to provide decent nutrition to the workers, friends and volunteers who are here rebuilding Shambhala. Some Shambhala workers have also lost homes in this storm, they need to be paid.

We are still in serious need of help. Most of all we need building and roofing materials -- tiles, laminate, palm fronds, etc. and tarps. The longer we go without proper roofing, the worse the damage gets. And the electric bill is due. If you are planning to visit Shambhala in the future, to stay or even just for a meal, we would be grateful if you would forward us payment in advance. The current need is great. Any amount you provide will be put to immediate use aiding recovery. Of course if you simply feel moved to help us, we would be very grateful.

With all of the Shambhala familia, far and wide, pulling together we will get through this. Thank you everyone for your support and well-wishes. Keeps sending positive energy! Love to you all..

SAVE THE BUTTERFLIES--Milkweed Disappearing= No Butterflies

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

It's very disturbing you know. My little girl and I have been looking and looking, last year and this year, we never see caterpillars and rarely see a butterfly. Such a shame and darn right scary. As a child, we played with caterpillars all the time. They were the brown and black ones. Really fuzzy and fun. Like a little bear. But there just aren't any. I'm sure it's the chemicals. All the spraying to keep gardens so lush, and the pulling of weeds...there was a lot of milkweed where I was as a child.

In Mexico we saw lots of butterflies, of course we saw a drastic change from one year to the next. One year it was very very green and we would walk down this road that we call butterfly alley. Lots and lots of butterflies, it was so beautiful, they loved the bougainvilleas.

The next year it was soooooooo dry and the bougainvilleas were in bad shape and there were none until much later there was some rain and then flowers came and some butterflies came.

Please Don't Spray Chemicals. Please Plant flowers the butterflies love. We need caterpillars and butterflies.
