Paddle for the Peace-VANIER PARK- JULY 8

Come on Vancouver, LET'S SHOW SOME LOVE FOR THE PEACE RIVER!!! Go to Vanier Park July 8!! #StopSiteC

On July 8th, our friends up north will be hosting the 12th Annual Paddle for the Peace to celebrate and defend the beautiful Peace River against the Site C dam (https://paddleforthepeace.ca/).

Why here? Here in the Lower Mainland, we want to give people who cannot make it to the Paddle an opportunity to show their solidarity with the Treaty 8 First Nations and the farmers who are losing their land to Site C - as well as their opposition to a project that will affect all of us for years to come!

You're invited! Please join us on July 8th at 1 pm at Vanier Park (by the Maritime Museum) in Vancouver to stand in opposition to this ridiculous dam and to enjoy a fun, family-friendly carnival themed afternoon of entertainment.

From 1-3 pm, enjoy speakers, performances, roving entertainers, and action tables where you can write to your representatives, sign postcards, volunteer, or find other ways to get involved in the movement!

Our featured speaker will be Helen Knott, an incredible poet and activist from Prophet River First Nation. We are honoured and thrilled to have Helen joining us!

We've confirmed stiltwalkers, puppeteers, hula-hoopers, poi spinners, musicians, poets, dancers, balloon sculptures, giant inflatable animals, and many other exciting and fun entertainers and activities! This is going to be an event to remember!

Want to paddle?
The BC Sea Wolves will lead a symbolic paddle from Granville Island to Vanier Park. If you would like to join the paddle, please be prepared to meet at Granville Island at 12 pm sharp. You can rent kayaks from Ecomarine Paddlesports. Sign up to paddle here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/FFBRFYN . Please note that only experienced paddlers should join this paddle, as we are not able to provide guarantees for your safety on the water.

Elizabeth May on Site C Dam

Thank you for trying Elizabeth!! You were great! They have their heads stuck somewhere!!!!

They COULD STOP IT!! But they are hiding behind the courts and delaying everything.

JUSTIN- DO SOMETHING!!!

"The joint federal-provincial review found that this project would probably cause economic losses to British Columbians. It found that the proponent had not adequately considered alternatives. It found that the proponent fell short of proving any need for the project. It also found that this project would cause permanent damage to the environment, including:
…probable extirpation of three species and would further unbalance the species diversity in the River through the ascendancy of [various]…introduced species, into the reservoir…would act cumulatively to affect fish throughout the remaining, previously undammed sections of the…River…
In other words, it would result in “…significant adverse cumulative effects on fish”.
The panel review also found that this project would cause a net loss of habitat, profound change in the type of character of remaining habitat during construction and operations that would be “…probable, negative, large, irreversible and permanent so long as the Site C Dam remains”.

In relation to first nations rights, which was the main point of my question, the panel review found that the first nations peoples of this area, namely a number of communities within the Treaty 8 First Nations, specifically the Halfway River, Doig River, Prophet River, and West Moberly First Nations, jointly within Treaty 8 protections would suffer permanent losses of cultural rights and treaty rights."

Children are committing suicide because of what this government is doing to their land, their parents, the families, their ancestors.

WHEN WILL IT STOP? When will corporate greed stop and "life on earth" take a precedent?

When will the government which was ELECTED by the PEOPLE actually look after the PEOPLE'S NEEDS, the INDIGENOUS PEOPLE'S NEEDS AND THE ENVIRONMENT'S NEEDS!!

JUSTIN, That is what you promised,  right?

JOIN IN SOLIDARITY with the HUNGER STRIKERS for Site C- #KeepthePeace

Solidarity is unity (as of a group or class) which produces or is based on unities of interests, objectives, standards, and sympathies. It refers to the ties in a society that bind people together as one.

This is what the Peace River valley looks like before Site C dam

Supporters of Treaty 8 Stewards of the Land Camp daily hunger strike after the northern camp was dismantled by the RCMP. Please show your support by attending the BC Hydro building. Not everyone is expected to hunger strike!

#StopSiteC

Beginning on Thursday, we invite everyone to gather daily from 8am to 5pm with the intention of shaming BC Hydro, who are violating treaty 8 rights and preparing to decimate vital agricultural lands in the Peace Valley.

"The hunger strike was called immediately following the aggressive RCMP attendance at the Site C/Treaty 8 Stewards of the Land Camp on Tuesday, March 1st, 2016.

Justice Bruce Butler approved B.C. Hydro’s application for an interim injunction and enforcement order to forcibly remove the Treaty 8 Indigenous Land Defenders and supporters, including local farmers and members of the Peace Valley Landowners Association. The court order and the riot act were read out to those at the camp and the RCMP were present until the camp was dismantled.

We believe B.C. Hydro is a failing and highly mismanaged Crown Corporation operating with reckless disregard for the public it is meant to serve. Continued hikes in rates and declining mining and LNG projects have cost us all enough. It is unacceptable that despite this, the British Columbia Supreme Court and the B.C. government have supported B.C. Hydro through its violations of the public trust and rights of the Indigenous Peoples of our province, whose territories they access without appropriate consultation and most certainly without consent. as a result of a flawed and extralegal permitting process the B.C. Provincial government is conducting.

We find it unacceptable that the RCMP have enforced such injustices on members of the Treaty 8 Stewards of the Land Defenders.

The hunger strikes will be held daily outside the BC Hydro Office from 8am to 5pm. Our demands are the same as the Treaty 8 Stewards of the Land; No construction until the court case of Treaty violations is finished and that this project be given a review with the BC Utilities Commission. "

”The government signed Treaty 8 in the early 1900s on our territory. The proceeded to pressure Indigenous people to follow and obey it, but in turn they do not honor our Treaty rights. We were promised to live and thrive continuing our ways of life, our livelihoods. We did not surrender, lease, rent or sell our lands” Yvonne Tupper – Member of Treaty 8

“We’re not eating here today to symbolize how this government is literally flooding the best agricultural lands of the north that could feed approximately a million people. "

"We’re not eating because our government is literally starving us of any form of justice and reconciliation for Treaty 8.” – Tamo Campos

David Suzuki's letter to BC Hydro's CEO Jessica MacDonald re Site C yesterday
Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2016 11:43 AM
To: Jessica MacDonald
Subject: Letter from David Suzuki

Dear Jessica,
I’m deeply disappointed with BC Hydro's heavy-handed tactics in dealing with Treaty 8 community members and their supporters, who had been camped at the historical Rocky Mountain Fort in the Peace Valley for weeks. I'm told efforts had been made to broker a discussion between people at the camp and you before Hydro sought a court injunction to remove them.
Throughout the regulatory process and consultation with affected First Nations, BC Hydro has never been able to make the case that power from the Site C dam is needed or that the project is worth the enormous cost to Indigenous lands and livelihoods, not to mention prime farmland and wildlife habitat.

Peer-reviewed research by the David Suzuki Foundation found that nearly two-thirds of the Peace region has already been devastated by human land use, from fracking to logging to mining, as well as earlier major hydro developments on the Peace River. The Joint Review Panel concluded that the cumulative impacts of this development are massive, and the negative consequences for First Nations and their treaty rights cannot be mitigated.

With Treaty 8 First Nations still in court, these issues remain unresolved. And yet BC Hydro has chosen to steamroll forward, in the absence of proper due diligence and without social license to proceed. Expert after expert has concluded that halting development on the dam to allow these court cases to conclude will not come at a cost to BC Hydro but will in fact save money for Hydro's customers.

I urge you to use common sense and halt work on the Site C dam and sit down with First Nations. The days of running roughshod over First Nations and local communities must end.
Yours sincerely,
David Suzuki

If you live anywhere between Prince Rupert to Fort St.John, there will be a solidarity bus leaving from Rupert to Site C tomorrow. Picking up folks also in Prince George! Lets fill the bus! See details below! Contact Goot Ges for more details!

We have Elders...saying NO to this project....and we need to honour them. We need to honour the generations that are coming. This is going to belong to them when we are gone. And we need to ensure that it happens. This is our home."

"This is a big fight. I think we are going to win it! I feel it in my bones that we are in the right spot. We are on the side of right here. They are on the wrong side. As long as we stand together on this matter, we are going to prevail."

Save the Peace River Poem

thoughts of a fire keeper listening to heavy equipment preparing to dam the Peace River
listen to the beat
of their windego drum
pounding iron into the river
injecting consumerism
into our Mother's blood
as if they could ever addict her
to her own self-destruction
the way they've addicted us

selling us a dam
that no damn world
could ever need
to feed us more electronic distraction
more disconnection
ramming their ego rapist erections
down our throats

selling us money they say
we've gotta have
arbitrary portraits of genocidal heroes
so we can buy factoried souls
reduced to supermarket meat
when we used to have bison here
selling us fear and oranges
off a boatload
from some far off country
when we have the soil
beneath our feet
to feed ourselves

and telling us if we want
our children's bellies to be full
we have to climb up in their beasts
and beat the windego drum
cannibalize our own blood
and the future of generations to come
leave them earthquakes and drought
with the never ending flood
of the greed we're now
addicted to

while our Mother cries out no!

no more
you cannot make her a whore
it isn't about how much
you're willing to offer
in dollars and in cents
the answer is no
this river wants to flow
no more bondage
with your dams

only offering humility, and respect
then she will give
and give and give again
and wrap us in the peace we crave
to hear the drums of our own hearts
to eat the food
we grow ourselves
and to bring the bison home
for our generations yet to come

we say no more

no more dancing to the sound
of the industrial windego drum

and with this sacred fire
like Saaya we'll turn back the beast
and let the river of our ancestors' love
not be stopped here
with the insatiable greed
of our addicted selves
but let it flow
with abundance to our young
they way our Mother
has always nurtured us

So This Is Forestry? :( Share WIDELY!

If a tree falls in the forest, does anybody hear?
WHAT IF YOU BLOW IT UP???

So this is logging? WTF?
This is disgusting. What about all the animals and creatures that might lived there...So they just BLOW THE SHIT OUT OF IT!!

"the beauty of explosives" - Did he really say that?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clearcutting
Clearcutting, clearfelling, or clearcut logging is a forestry/logging practice in which most or all trees in an area are uniformly cut down. Clearcutting, along with shelterwood and seed tree harvests, is used by foresters to create certain types of forest ecosystems and to promote select species that require an abundance of sunlight or grow in large, even-age stands.[1] Logging companies and forest-worker unions in some countries support the practice for scientific, safety, and economic reasons. Detractors see clearcutting as synonymous with deforestation, destroying natural habitats[2] and contributing to climate change.[3]

IF A TREE FALLS
Rain forest
Mist and mystery
Teeming green
Green brain facing labotomy
Climate control centre for the world
Ancient cord of coexistence
Hacked by parasitic greedhead scam
From Sarawak to Amazonas
Costa Rica to mangy B.C. hills
Cortege rhythm of falling timber.

What kind of currency grows in these new deserts,
These brand new flood plains?

If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?

Cut and move on
Cut and move on
Take out trees
Take out wildlife at a rate of species every single day
Take out people who've lived with this for 100,000 years
Inject a billion burgers worth of beef
Grain eaters, methane dispensers.

Through thinning ozone,
Waves fall on wrinkled earth
Gravity, light, ancient refuse of stars,
Speak of a drowning
But this, this is something other.
Busy monster eats dark holes in the spirit world
Where wild things have to go
To disappear
Forever

If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?

If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
If a tree falls in the forest does anybody hear?
Anybody hear the forest fall?
