The Global Village

Researched, Written, Directed, Edited & Mixed by Jennifer Millenor

The Global Village
The World's Suburbia
An UnderStudy2010 Production

The Internet -"a communication system that creates a space for unrestrained conversation & fixes that conversation into a semi-permanent historical record and allows non-commercial cultural production to flourish." ~ The Empire of Mind

We were promised many things about the internet - Increase productivity, Improved Global Dialog, Revolutionize consumer spending patterns, but what do we know about who's online.
Canadians are online, but what about those who aren't.

What do we know about the people online?
Who are the people who aren't online. Those without access.
Does it matter?

Does the Internet enable dialogue?
How important is an opinion if you don't know who's it is.
America's poor and Africa's child soldiers aren't online.

Maybe the internet is the new global memory, but who's memory are they?
Can the Internet be a catalyst for change?

Of course but only if the privileged few who have an address in the global village have the will to make change happen.

Michelle Vulama

Biography

Michelle Vulama is a Canadian artist, originating from Vancouver, BC. Though her work is diverse in form and content, she is chiefly recognised for her original and distinct style of rock-painting.

To those close to her, Vulama’s artistic potential was evident from an early age. As a child she dabbled in an abundance of artistic forms: everything from shoe-box dollhouses, to delicately crafted sock-puppets, to the sketches of ‘pig-faced people’ which still resonate in her current work. However, it wasn’t until her late teens that Vulama, having acquired a job as an office assistant at Vancouver’s Clochard Gallery, found the inspiration, guidance and encouragement to hone her talents and find her artistic niche.
Despite having received no formal artistic education, Vulama has always been fascinated by the idea that she can use her skills to transform ‘bits of garbage into something people will admire and value’. Consequently, Vulama frequently took to painting on unusual canvases such as jam-jar lids and cereal boxes. Experimentation with a multitude of these atypical mediums enabled Vulama to refine her canvas-preference and ultimately led her to develop her unique penchant for rock-painting.  Read More Here http://www.michellevulama.com/bio.html

Sal Spirit Bear for BC Premier

http://salspiritbear.ca/platform

The 6 Claw-Point Plan

If elected Liberal leader and Premier of BC, a Sal Spirit Bear government will move quickly to:
  • Wrap up the 2009 Great Bear Rainforest Agreements that the government committed to. This means implementing all the elements required to achieve healthy communities and healthy ecosystems, including the protection of habitat for his pals — the murrelets, goats, frogs, goshawks and his cousins the grizzlies.
  • Enter into sincere and progressive negotiations with First Nations and other coastal communities of the Great Bear Rainforest to keep the promise made: social and economic well-being for their people and control over their traditional territories.
  • Support sustainable forestry in places that don’t compromise healthy ecosystems.
  • Ban oil tanker traffic from our coastal waters. Sal will represent the Great Bear Rainforest and demand that the Federal Government end its support for the Enbridge pipeline that would bring dirty tar sands oil to the coast of the Rainforest. No pipeline, no tankers, no problem!
  • Protect wild salmon by implementing a long-term strategy developed by his friends in the environmental community. They have a great strategy; I will give it teeth. Mmmmm salmon.
  • Proclaim a province-wide statutory holiday in April: Wild Forests Day. February would be nice – after all, there’s no holiday in February – but too many of his fellow beings are hibernating.
Sal's Story
Sal Spirit Bear was born inside an old hollowed-out red cedar tree. The tree was a huge, old-growth red cedar, big enough for his mamma to give birth in. The red cedar was on Princess Royal Island in the Great Bear Rainforest. Sal has a lot of family there. Many of the spirit bears live on that island and others nearby.
In his early years, Sal was content with catching fish, rubbing his back against massive old trees, chumming around with his brothers and sisters and hanging with his friends the goshawks, the coastal tailed frogs, and the marbled murrelets. Sometimes he went to the mainland to visit extended family and friends like the mountain goats. He also stayed in touch with his cousins the Grizzlies. Life was good. Lots of food, good company, and the local humans were respectful. But one day, while on an extended trip into the Great Bear Rainforest, he saw a hunter shoot one his Grizzly cousins. He also noticed vast scars in the landscape. The big, big old trees were disappearing before his eyes. He was quite upset; his innocence was shattered. He was barely a teenager at this point. His Mom tried to shield him from these dangers to his homeland, but things only got worse. Read More here http://salspiritbear.ca/about-sal-2/

The Sound of ...(silence)

So this is super cool, I used to live in the Kootenays and I always dream about doing something at the Oxygen Art Centre in Nelson. Check out what Deborah Loxam-Kohl created. It's so beautiful!! Not only that she's a super talented inventor and has won awards be sure to read the Articulate Magazine article below.

Deborah Loxam-Kohl: The Sound of… (silence)
by Bill Metcalfe on Thursday, December 30th, 2010 at 8:26 pm

Artist Deborah Loxam-Kohl has set up shop at the Oxygen Art Centre in Nelson for a two-month residency during which she will create ”The Sound of… (silence)”, an installation using felted wool. See the schedule at the bottom of this page for associated events including an artist talk and workshops.

Sandra Hartline has written about this project in Articulate magazine. http://www.wkartscouncil.com/articulate/ARTiculate_Fall10_lowres.pdf

The proposed installation developed out of two areas of interest: exploring the applications of felted wool in making form; and an increasing awareness of, and sensitivity to, noise.

“I love wool, it is warm, you can wrap yourself in it, it is like a cocoon, it is a sense of well-being and in those moments there is that sense of silence that comes over you like a shroud.”

Those are the words of Deborah Loxam-Kohl, talking about her favourite artistic medium. I wrote about her plans for the installation The Sound of…..(Silence) in an earlier post. Last week I interviewed her a few days after the opening reception for the finished work. I have included the text of a few of her comments here along with some photos, and you can click here to hear the whole 14-minute interview in a podcast.

And you can check out her upcoming form felting workshop on our events calendar here.

http://arts.inthekoots.com/3-d-form-felting-workshop/

One doesn’t often think inventions when it comes to felting but Deborah Loxam-Kohl is in fact just that. She’s inventor of a technique and machine to felt three-dimensional objects in-the-round and a sculpture artist. Her work has been exhibited around the globe and she recently finished a residency at Oxygen Art Centre , ‘The Sound of… (silence)’ that explores the sound-absorbing qualities of felted wool within a built environment. The body of work resulting in a low-relief sculptural wall of felt wool.

Loxam-Kohl will be offering a not to be missed 3-D FORM FELTING WORKSHOP (Intermediate) at the Slocan Valley Threads Guild. This two-day intensive teaches basic techniques for felting in-the-round, by hand. Participants will produce small samples before continuing onto a project. Felted forms can be applied in the making of hats, handbags, basket-like containers, toys and other items. Examples of finished felted pieces will be displayed at first session. Needs list provided upon registration.

The course runs on Saturday Feb. 26 and Sunday, Feb. 10am to 4pm. Fee: $150 + HST Call Craig at Slocan Valley Recreation for registration at 250.226.0008.

Deborah is a graduate of the Alberta College of Art & Design Fibre program and works as an independent curator and directs DLK Design Lab, a multi-disciplinary studio, from her base camp in the Slocan Valley.

Blind Sculptor Recreates Untouchable Masterpiece

Blind sculptor recreates untouchable masterpiece

http://ca.news.yahoo.com/blind-sculptor-recreates-untouchable-masterpiece-20110221-033101-269.html

SALA BOLOGNESE, Italy (Reuters) - When blind sculptor Felice Tagliaferri was forbidden to touch one of Italy's most famous statues, he decided revenge was best served not just cold but stone cold.

Tagliaferri, 41, spent much of two years creating his marble interpretation of "Cristo Velato," or "Veiled Christ," a 1753 masterpiece that he has neither seen nor touched.

Giuseppe Sanmartino's exquisitely detailed sculpture of the body of Christ lying wrapped in a fine shroud is one of the prime tourist attractions in Naples.

Busloads of blind and disabled people from throughout Italy came to Tagliaferri's studio near Bologna in northern Italy to take symbolic taps on his chisels. The result is a powerfully rendered life-sized Jesus that Tagliaferri punningly calls "Cristo (ri)Velato," or "Christ Revealed."

"There are so many messages. One is that a block of marble isn't ruined when it is lightly touched by expert hands," he said.

"Second, the disabled are sick and tired of waiting for others to decide and tell them what they can and cannot do."

In May 2008, Tagliaferri visited the Sansevero Chapel, eager to experience its famous "Veiled Christ" in the only way a blind person can: by touching it. He was blocked, he said, first by a guard and then by the administration, despite his protests that he was a professional sculptor who would do no damage.

Now, he is savoring a triumphal return to Naples when "Christ Revealed" begins a national tour at the Royal Palace from February 26 to March 13. The pope is expected to see it in Ancona on September 11. The statue will also travel to Messina, Rimini and Siena.

BLIND

Blind since the age of 14, Tagliaferri was studying furniture restoration and working at a switchboard when he joined an experiment to test whether sight is necessary for sculpturing. The answer changed his life.

Reviews

"This movie is a really great introduction to Egyptian cinema. Many aspects of the movie's humor easily transfer to English audiences. We can all share the frustration with bureaucracy and the humor in stock characters. This movie is an interesting examination of the issues of Egyptian society and modernization. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in contemporary culture in Egypt."--Time Out Magazine

"A complete outstanding Egyptian triumph, which deserves dozens of awards!!! a controversial script from the brave Wahid Hamed. magnificent performances. a classic black political comedy that would make you laugh to tears".-- AL Ahram Weekly
