Between Two Worlds: An Indigenous Wanderer'Z Song

```I asked AI if they could help me rewrite Stings song for fun but add my words and came back with this, which I thought was pretty hilariously creepy and weird but I like it. It was fast and helpful and fun.
AI
Sure, we can definitely create a new version of Sting's "Englishman in New York" that fits your story. Here's the original chorus and a verse from the song for reference:
Chorus:
I'm an alien, I'm a legal alien
I'm an Englishman in New York
```

Verse:

```
I don't drink coffee, I take tea, my dear
I like my toast done on one side
And you can hear it in my accent when I talk
I'm an Englishman in New York
```

Now, let's transform these lyrics to reflect your story about being a Canadian with a deep love for Mexico and your experiences

Chorus:

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

```
Verse:
```

I love the markets and the street food here

I dream in Spanish every night

And you can feel it in my heart when I talk

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

Full Song:

Verse 1:

I love the markets and the street food here

I dream in Spanish every night

And you can feel it in my heart when I talk

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

Chorus:

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

Verse 2:

Spent my days in Oaxaca and the coast

Covid years were long but sweet

I find my peace in the Mexican sun

But my home still calls to me

Chorus:

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

Bridge:

Living in between two worlds

Canada's cold, Mexico's warm

At sixty-two, I still chase dreams

A life's journey, so it seems

Verse 3:

I can’t work here, I’m not legal in this land

Didn't marry, can't get residency

But Mexico's rhythm is in my soul

In Canada, it's hard to be

Chorus:

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

I'm Indigenous, but I'm legal as Canadian

I'm a wanderer in Mexico

Outro:

I'll keep wandering, I'll keep dreaming

Between the lands, my heart's divided

But wherever I may roam

I carry both lands as my home

Reconciliation Carving Series - Langara College- Fall 2017

I was at Langara College today. Had to drop of a few things and they happened to be having the orientation for the Reconciliation carving program. These are the sacred panels we created.
Our program brought together Indigenous and Non-Indigenous and we worked together to design and create them.

One panel honors the children who did not return from the Residential schools and one panel honors the Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women.

There is a new program starting this fall and I ask you to inquire and share the info and encourage people to participate so we can all "move forward in a good way!"

------------------------------------------------------------

Reconciliation Carving Series

https://langara.ca/…/ab…/reconciliation-carving-program.html

Space available for September 2017!
Langara's Aboriginal Studies Department, in partnership with the Fine Arts Department, offers a unique Aboriginal carving series that is open to all students.
Students will complete two carving courses and an applied research course. Under the supervision of acclaimed Coast Salish artist Aaron Nelson-Moody, students will collaborate on the creation of two reconciliation house boards. Once complete, the house boards will become part of a planned outdoor Aboriginal space on Langara’s campus. Langara Film Arts students will document the carving process. Read more

----------------------------------------------------------------

There is so much work to be done and it starts with you and me. We must each take responsibility and help heal the wounds and create a better world for our children and children's children.

If you are interested in my TRC Carving Journey you can read about it on my blog here.

Carving at the KANATA FESTIVAL!

So if you are like me, you are confused and struggling today with this whole day. I am not going to celebrate colonialism today. That feels so wrong and I had a good long cry in the tub this morning. I wasn't the only one crying, did you see it's raining in Ottawa.

That's the ancestors crying. :(

We did have a lovely time at the Kanata Festival(taking place on the  Unceded Coast Salish Territories) yesterday and I might pop down for a bit today but I will share these photos here. I encourage you all to go to the Kanata Festival and show your support.

#Canada150plus #Canada150+ #KanataFestival

I have to remember what Harold Joe taught me yesterday. He spoke how cedar teaches us patience. He reminded me of how a cedar tree can grow to be 1500 years old..."now that's patience " he said.

Oh how I need patience. I keep thinking everyone is going to wake up and get on board and when they don't it hurts. I am not even the ones that were in residential school and none of my family was but still I have so much empathy. I hurt for them and all the people who suffered from that Residential school legacy and the damage caused by colonialism to these beautiful souls and to the Mother Earth.

I do feel pain though for my great grandma's (Kalapuya, Iroquois, Metis) and great great grandma's (Songhees) because I know they suffered and this is what they call the intergenerational trauma. That trauma is passed through the womb of our mothers, the lifegivers, the matriarchs. The stresses they felt we feel. But I feel contorted because of the settler side too, the Bohemian, Swedish & Portuguese.

So I pray for patience and I need to get some wood so I can carve...carve out all this anxiety and pain and frustration of this day. It's almost over. It's just one day but to think that $500 million was spent. I can not imagine how much money that is...truly...but I can imagine how many people it COULD have helped.

So I am going to share my photos here and let you see what fun we had. Thank you Harold Joe for your patience and guidance and letting us carve on your house post. Truly grateful!!
O'Siem. I hold my hands up to you!

What was neat was the day before we had visited and I had walked into the longhouse, taken a photo of the inside but had missed it from the outside and I wanted to get that photo...then I saw the Kitsilano/Khatsahlano sign and a big bell went off in my head...because that is my neighbourhood and there was the housepost and the carver- who turned out to be Harold Joe- he's from Cowichan.
So that was super special to me. A sign!

Will you help us immerse ourselves in culture?

My daughter was 4.5 when my mom passed and we were in Nelson.
We moved during Kindergarten. We had 4 teachers in that one year. 2 in Nelson because the first teacher needed a knee operation and so another teacher took over. But in Vancouver, the same thing happened. The first teacher got sick and so another came.

On the first day of grade one some really funky things happened and it was the catalyst that pushed me to buy the tickets...and because I had managed to scrape together enough money and off we went to Mexico, so she could learn about her Mexican culture, language and landscapes.
Here's a little post about it. http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.ca/2016/12/to-zipolite-with-love.html
on my blog Zipolita'z & Angelita'z Adventurez in Mexico
http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.ca

This is a great video and it explains so simply what is wrong with the way people learn these days and what is considered "normal everyday life" and what is school and how it got there.

And this doesn't even mention the TRUTH... about the evilness of Residential Schools and how that was the horrendous way of assimilating all the Indigenous people for 125 years and it's legacy lives with so many children taken away (stolen) and put in the welfare system and the parents put in jail...it is still happening, just a different format but there has been good and Shane Pointe talks about it here...but we have so much work to do.

And do you SEE how evil corporate greed and selfish politicians hurt so many children, teachers, families, so bad that they had to go to court. Angel had 16 teachers/subs in grade 7. It was truly insane.

Teachers Federation of BC Wins in Supreme Court!!!
https://tinawinterlik.blogspot.ca/2016/11/teachers-federation-of-bc-wins-in.html

So my kid's been brainwashed by the system. She's convinced she needs to stay in school. I am like what the "f" are you learning there that we can't learn from the environment (Mother Earth) and the internet (Google God).

Traveling is huge.
 Learning another language and culture and it is her culture. Her father is Mexican and she has half siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins and they all speak Spanish and live in Mexico and we have not been there for 5 years. It is too long.

When I made my first trip with her it took my 7 years from the time she was conceived to the time she actually met her father.

She has forgotten SO MUCH! and she doesn't even know or realize it. Time is like that.

So I am putting it out there. I want to take her on a big trip. Maybe just to go to Mexico. Maybe bigger... like a train across so called "Canada" and fly to Portugal, go to Sweden, (Prague-Bohemia) and then to Mexico and up to Vancouver Island (Nanoose Bay) ...

See that would be tracing my roots and hers. Maybe I could make a documentary about it all. That's the dream.

And I am not asking for freebies, I want to sell my art to pay for it. So that's why I was thinking of doing an auction or something. Maybe use Facebook Live or something because I want to donate some of the money raised to help the environmental causes that need help fighting the stupid government/pipelines/fishfarms/dams/Lng ...I don't know yet.

I just know I have to do something soon. I would like to de-phone ourselves. I bought her a phone for safety but her and I are on it way to much...I want us to spend time on the beach, in the woods, outside enjoying life, learning new things, customs, culture.

My Spanish sucks right now, my French is basically non-existent. She on the other hand is finishing up a year of French and Spanish. So impressed she could do both at the same time. Now she needs immersion.

Will you help us immerse ourselves in culture?

http://savemycoast.blogspot.ca/

See I made this paintings to raise awareness for the causes I love but also to hopefully fund a big trip or a big move. I need a tiny house and a garden...all my stuff is in storage, I want to get it out.

So can I be honest here. I can't really fundraise because I have a history of old student loans/ debt...and well while I paid off more than half it all fell apart just before I had Angel, when I got downsized and well what ever... I haven't had a credit card in all that time. 15+ years.

Could you do that? Live with out a credit card. So not sure how all that funding stuff works(haven't looked into it in years) but I don't think I can collect it. It will have to go into a friends name and then they will have to give it to me. So if you are wondering that is why I have never done it. I hope I don't regret being honest here. Okay, I will keep you posted as I figure out the details.

oh ps. I tried something on Kickstarter many years ago...to travel with Angel and they denied it. That was before all the big craze of crowdfunding. And for the longest time I felt guilty to ask because it seems so many others have such valid causes.

**Before I took the first trip with Angel, I tried to fund it myself and encourage people to help fund each portion...like one person pays the bus tix, one pays the plane, one the hotel...but then someone in my family made me sad as they laughed at me and said "no one is going to pay for your vacation"

So then I gave up...and then all things funding things happened.

Well it will be up to everyone to decide but the way those things work is you have to get 30% from friends and family and then people will consider giving...so my social media family, would you be willing to help me? We will see.

STAY TUNED!!

Top Ten Reasons to go to College @NEC_Vancouver

Top Ten Reasons to go to College

1. Become More Knowledgeable About Your Culture – Learning the real history and accomplishments of Indigenous people is sometimes sad but ultimately liberating.

2. Learn More About Your Favorite Subject - You’ll gain access to professors who have advanced degrees in their subject and can teach you more about psychology, ecology or astronomy.

3. Build Self Confidence – As a college student completes more courses and finds those areas to excel, a strong sense of self becomes more evident.

4. Expand your Brain Power – Dive into subjects such as maths and English to develop pathways in your brain on how to think in many different ways.

5. Enhance Employment Opportunities - In today’s employment market ever more jobs prefer workers with post-secondary credentials and these jobs often offer better work conditions.

6. Enjoy Your Life – Almost half of Canadians live paycheck to paycheck and an education is the biggest factor in building job security, a good credit rating and personal savings to do the things you love.

7. Set an Example for Your Children – Want your children to have a college education? Probably the best way to encourage this is to set the example by taking some college courses yourself.

8. Gain Independence - The transition to living on your own can be much less stressful and more gradual as you build your skills in a college program.

9. Meet Different People and Make New Friends - College is a great opportunity to make new friends and meet new people who have both similar and different backgrounds from yours.

10. Increase Your Social Network - College friends and acquaintances can create a valuable network you can utilize for years to come in your career and social life.

Opening the Harriet Nahanee Memorial Trail- Walbran

Quote:

"What I would like to see is people with [traditional] knowledge to teach the small, little people how to grow up with pride. This generation is lost. My generation is lost − they're assimilated. They don't think like an Indian.

What I'd like to see is our five-year-olds being taught their language, their songs, their games, their spirituality, their Indian, eh, their Indian-ness.

'd like to ask all the people out there to reclaim their culture − practice it, teach the children, and let's reclaim our backbone, our culture and put some pride in our children"
Harriet Nahanee
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harriet_Nahanee

Harriet Nahanee also known as Tseybayotl[1] (December 7, 1935[2] – February 24, 2007) was an Indigenous rights activist, residential school alumnus, and environmental activist.

Photo by Rob Baxter- Wikipedia

"FYI Harriet Nahanee, originally from Pacheedaht and present in the Walbran Valley on the front lines in the 90's, was a lifelong activist involved in many struggles fighting for the recognition of Indigenous land rights and protection of the environment.

She was a human rights activist and fought against discrimination, marginalization and institutionalization of Indigenous people in the cities, especially Indigenous women in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

She was a vital member of many movements and activist communities, and a strong role model for many including some FOCW organizers.

We are honored to attach her name to the magnificent trail system that lies outside of the protected area of the Central Walbran Valley."

Cultural Curation

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Cultural Curation, I love that term. Read below Rebecca Coleman's experience, I believe it's a very common theme these days and it's wonderful and special. I know I love looking at old photos, and the home movies my dad made are SO special, as he died when I young, but he made those memories for me.

I may not have really remembered all the things he documented if I didn't have those movies to look at and thus trigger the memories. Even the photos of my grandmas house in Vancouver and watching it be built. I am glad my grandfather was good photographer and took all those photos. They are like gold to me.

 Rebecca tells about and conference she went to recently and some points the Keynote speaker made. To Quote Rebecca...

"A couple of weeks back, at the #Eat.Drink.Tweet conference, the keynote was delivered by a guy named Rick Bakas, whose claim to fame is that he was the very first Director of Social Media in the wine industry ...

Rick Bakas

"legacy of thoughts, photos and even conversations he would be leaving to his own grandchildren via blogs, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flickr: a kind of cultural curation, he called it. "

http://www.rebeccacoleman.ca/2011/04/06/social-media/on-living-life-out-here/
 Quoting Rebecca-
"It’s pretty cool when you think about it. My son is growing up in a time where I’ll often hear him say “Hey, Mom, take a picture of this and put it on Facebook.”

And he even knows how to do that himself.
