Prime
Minister Trudeau will meet with provincial leaders and first ministers
in the Vancouver Convention Centre on March 3rd to launch discussions on
developing a National Climate Strategy.
Trudeau urged us to
"take an active part in" ensuring the success of the Paris Climate
Agreement.
And we will, by gathering outside and speaking out for a bold
Climate Strategy that creates more good jobs, protects the air, land
and water, and tackles the climate crisis head on.
By keeping fossil
fuels in the ground and rapidly shifting to renewable energy, we can
create an economy that is fairer and generates hundreds of thousands of
good jobs.
We need a Climate Strategy that honours Indigenous Peoples’ rights and recognizes
their leadership in protecting the land, water and climate.
We need a
Climate Strategy that re-allocates public resources from polluting
freeway expansions to public transit powered by renewable electricity.
We need a Climate Strategy formed by listening to the ideas of ordinary
people.

When the Liberals were elected in October it was on a platform that included a number of important promises related to climate change that would set out to fix some of the damage done by a Conservative government with an atrocious environmental record. One of the most significant of these promises was to overhaul the National Energy Board (NEB) environmental assessment process for resource-based projects like pipelines – a process that was badly undermined under the last government. However, the Liberals are already sending strong signals that they’re not serious about following through on this process. Next week the final round of hearings for Kinder Morgan’s proposed Trans-Mountain pipeline expansion will move forward and will do so under the same rules set by the Conservatives – the same rules the Liberals promised to change. is important that we do that first and foremost from our end obviously
for Quebeckers but also for all Canadians. And it’s extraordinary what
we… what we are beginning here in Paris. Also, the work that we will
continue to do there together in the coming months and years.
