Who Can Afford a Home in BC Now? Not the People Who Built This Province

 By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

I recently read that you need a $125,000 salary to buy a home in BC. My first thought? Who actually makes that kind of money? Because I sure don’t—and most people I know never have.

Let me take you back.

In 1999, I was working a tech job, doing night shifts and overtime. I earned around $45,000—a decent wage for the time. But after taxes, nearly $10,000 was gone. I was working hard, sacrificing sleep, and still barely getting ahead.

Fast forward a few years, I worked as a nanny—an essential, caring job—and made about $24,000 a year. Try living on that in Vancouver today. Many people are lucky if they make $30,000 or $40,000 working full-time. And now we’re told we need $125,000 just to buy a modest home?

How Did We Get Here?

It didn’t used to be like this.

In the '80s and '90s, you could earn a working-class wage and eventually buy a home, even in cities like Vancouver. A single income household could sometimes manage. You didn't need to be rich—you just needed stability, hard work, and a little luck.

Now, even two full-time incomes aren’t enough.

This shift didn't happen overnight. Housing became a commodity, not a human right. Global investors, financial speculation, unchecked development, and policies that ignored everyday people led to a system where only the wealthy—or the already-housed—can win.

Add in Trump’s trade war, pandemic inflation, rising interest rates, and the cost of everything from lumber to lettuce shot up. Our wages didn’t keep up. And people like me—artists, caregivers, workers, parents—were left behind.

Newcomers: You’re Not Alone

If you’re new to BC and struggling, I see you. You may be wondering why everyone seems to have it so good—while you’re hustling just to make rent.

The truth is, many long-time residents are struggling too. We remember a time when this place was livable. But over the decades, it’s become a province that rewards speculation, not contribution

What Can We Do?

We need to:

Tell our stories. The truth gets buried under glossy developer ads and government spin.

Push for policy change. Real rent control, better wages, and non-market housing.

Support each other. Community matters now more than ever.

Housing shouldn’t be a dream only for the rich. It’s a basic need—and we all deserve dignity.

Have a story about housing in BC?  Let’s raise our voices—together.

No Clark or MASS HYSTERIA in the streets!!

I heard that Clark is going to raise the welfare rates..what a joke...lie... and John Horgan ...a big $100 a month is nothing and WILL NOT HELP!! So many poor are not on welfare, can't get it, refuse it and if they need disability or IE they are not eligible SO GET WITH THE PROGRAM!! Many would rather live on the streets, and horrible often dangerous situations than be screwed over and over and over by the welfare system.

No Clark or MASS HYSTERIA in the streets!!

Let me tell you how really F*K'D things are here in Vancouver. There is a lovely Filipino lady who has just returned to her job after taking a year off to look after her newborn child.  Guess what!! She has no day care, she can only work when her husband isn't working.

Now let's look a little closer.  She has looked around but she can't find anyone she trusts or will work for a wage that even makes it worthwhile to work.

I mean think about it, you have a child ...so you can ACTUALLY raise it yourself, NOT some lovely Filipino nanny, which by the way is how this lovely woman came to Canada. She looked after another poor woman's child, that couldn't do it herself...because she had to WORK to support herself and child and possibly with the help of a husband.

So now we've come FULL CIRCLE. The Filipino nanny immigrated, married, had a child but she can't afford to stay at home and raise the child herself, as is, it's 1. 5 hour commute to the job she is returning to.. and so you need someone to work 8 hours + another 3 or more for traveling time.

People must charge $15 an hour to survive, Daycares were outrages in the early 2000's, I can't imagine now... I remember it being $700 a month if they were potty trained, $900 for babies...something insane.

So even at ...minumum wage is $10.45 (I think it is) but that's not going to happen.

Any they wonder why women and children are having a problem with POVERTY & HOMELESSNESS.

GEE WHAT COULD POSSIBLY BE THE PROBLEM?

Any of this sound familiar...right here in good ole' BC with CC!

The irony of the whole thing is if people get helped out now, with daycare and housing and stuff. AGAIN I fall through the loophole.  I was born and raised and worked my whole life here, in BC and had and raised my child  here. When I needed, whether is was WCB, Welfare, EI ( I had to cash my RSVP's to take a course) , banks (Student loans ) they have SCREWED me over and over.

So when people come here and get the benefits and they buy homes and they go to nice schools it pisses me off a bit.

Then I look at the abuse First Nations, their land- unceded territories, the treaties, the DTES, the Opoid Crisis and I get really pissed.  I guess they figure if they can't force us into poverty and /or jail then they will build a pipeline and poison us and the land and take are the rights and money.

I think about my Gr. Gr. Grandma who was actually from here and her family the last 13,000 + years and how she felt when she saw what was happening.. What did my grandparents think... what damage was done by my immigrant grandparents...

But let's fast forward to 2001 and onwards....

I have ALWAYS believed that all of us women who were victimized by Gordon Campbell's cuts and continued with Christy Clark's antics WE DESERVE COMPENSATION!!

We deserve compensation for undo stress, suffering, pain, anguish, harassment (I was harassed by bill collectors ) and our children, they have paid with their mental and physical health. I believe that Gordon Campbell and Christy Clark should pay. I think politicians should pay for their #CrimesAgainstHumanity

They should be charged and made to pay and made to do some hard labour. Like clean people homes and toilets, vacuum, wash floors on hands and knees and  really see how the other side lives because if she ever understood it, she forgot...and if not then she needs to experience it.

Oh I as an extra give her a nice dose of bed bugs.(not really- I wouldn't wish them on my worse enemy...but then again she may be my worst enemy...) I remember that someone said that of  poor Jagrup...as they said "you truly haven't lived until you've experienced that. "

I could share tons more but better stop.

Yah...that's how F*k*d things are.

Hey Hey Ho Ho CC has got to go!

I do not like her,
I do not like her here, I do not like here there,
I DO NOT, DO NOT, LIKE HER ANYWHERE!!

I don't want my kids to
PUKE BROWN GOO
As so sadly they did
IN KALAMAZOO!!

Post #998 Save the Artist's Cabin

This is very sad. Destroying something for money. Yes they say it's to clean it all up and remove the toxic chemicals but it's about condos. Everyone can see that when they read this. Tragic that they would treat elderly people like that, especially artists that have been living there for years. Why couldn't they just wait until they pass on. How cruel. Shame on this city and government for treating them this way. Reflects very poorly on the city.

"Mr. Neil, now 90 – a musician, composer and visual artist who received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Vancouver Mayor’s Arts Award last year – has lived in the cabin on and off since 1966, serving as a sort of beach watchman for the company next door, McKenzie Barge. He initially paid rent to the shipyard – $15 a month, “and then eventually they said don’t bother,” says Ms. Itter, a sculptor and writer who joined Mr. Neil 13 years after he moved in."

Carole Itter, above, says Port Metro’s warning of financial repercussions for non-compliance are very unnerving: ‘We have a little savings, and if it all gets tied up in that, I don’t know what we would do.’

"The cabin—built as a Coal Harbour float home during the 1930s but beached between Deep Cove’s Cates Park and the McKenzie Barge shipyard for the past several decades—has existed in a state of legal limbo for years. It’s on land owned by Port Metro Vancouver, the entity that has given Itter and Neil until January 31 to vacate the premises and that is threatening to charge them for the cabin’s removal or demolition."

Good-bye Elevator, Hello Couch

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Today is a funny day for me, a day of Gratitude, a day of Good-byes and New Beginnings.

Today after months of waiting they took out the old elevator...we've been using the new one for a few weeks now, and it's wonderful, but it's sort of sad too. I've lived in this building off and on for many years now.

I've had my own apartment, lived with friends, subletted and repeated this process. We moved away but came back and I'm sure we will do it again. That elevator and I had a long term relationship and I took it for granted...until today when I saw him/her being taken away by the workmen, all it's metal bits and pieces and the particle board...being compacted and thrown away.

I was sad realizing how many times that elevator had moved me, or how many birthday parties it saw, how it gave me a ride when I brought my cherub home from the hospital or all the sad moments when my mom passed and the happy moments when we left and came home from Mexico. If the walls could talk ...OMG the things that elevator saw.

Well Good bye Elevator, THANK YOU for never breaking down while I was inside, Thanks for all the rides, Thanks for the good times!!

Hello Couch. I got a new couch today! So Happy!! There was a really great sale ($150) on at London Drugs. I really needed a new couch, as I have been sleeping on this little cot thing from Ikea, but it's just not wide enough and well I had some issues a while back and got rid of the original mattress, so just had a bunch of blankets on there and basically this thing sucked because it was hard as a rock.

Anyways now I have a lovely new couch. YAY!!!

So as I said it was a Day of Gratitude. Thank you UNIVERSE for smiling on me.

I also want to thank the Universe for some of the great connections I've made lately and the gorgeous weather and for letting me be inspired.

Thank you for letting my kid learn to ride her bike and I got my bike fixed yesterday...so we are MOBILE! Yay!!!

So Everyday the plan is to go out an Paint. Thank You God for Inspiration!!

Well have to run, my cherub is hungry. Thank you God and the Universe for the delicious salmon, rice and carrots we are about to have. YUM!

May you all be as blessed and have a wonderful day!!

Earth Bag House

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

One day, I'm going to have house like this. An Earthbag House. Somewhere in the Kootenays with a BIG herb garden and a small apothecary. That's my dream and I'm going to make it happen, What's your dream?  http://www.earthbagbuilding.com

Quoting from "Earthbag Building.com" Building with earthbags (sometimes called sandbags) is both old and new. Sandbags have long been used, particularly by the military, for creating strong, protective barriers, or for flood control. The same reasons that make them useful for these applications carry over to creating housing. Since the walls are so substantial, they resist all kinds of severe weather (or even bullets) and also stand up to natural calamities such as earthquakes and floods. They can be erected simply and quickly with readily available components, for very little money.
