In today’s digital world, most people imagine social media as a place to connect with real friends, families, and communities. But behind the screen, there’s something much darker happening.
“Not Farms” (a term I’m using to reflect their fake nature) are massive networks of fake accounts — sometimes run by humans, sometimes by bots (automated software), and often a mix of both. These fake profiles are designed to:
- Argue, troll, and attack
- Spread lies or propaganda
- Manipulate public opinion
- Confuse and isolate real people
They don’t grow food — they grow conflict, confusion, and control.
🏭 What Do “Not Farms” Look Like?
In some countries, you can literally find warehouses filled with smartphones, all connected to power banks and internet. Each device runs multiple fake accounts — on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, YouTube, and more.
Imagine:
- A wall of glowing screens
- Fake users arguing online
- Automated bots liking, commenting, and sharing
- Pretend “concerned citizens” in your feed
That’s a Not Farm.
📜 Where Did They Come From?
The history of Not Farms is tied to the weaponization of social media:
- Early 2010s – Governments and campaigns realized social media could influence voters faster than TV ever could.
- 2016 US Election – Russian troll farms like the Internet Research Agency used fake accounts to stir division.
- Now – They exist globally. Some are political. Others are profit-driven.
They’ve evolved into sophisticated digital actors, trained to imitate real people with fake posts, opinions, and empathy.
🧓 Who Are They Targeting?
No one is immune, but some groups are especially vulnerable:
- Seniors – Especially those with dementia or memory issues
- Youth – Shown harmful, polarizing, or fake content
- People in recovery – Targeted with triggering ads or content
- Activists – Harassed or silenced
- Everyone – Fed false narratives to divide and distract
🤖 How Do “Not Farms” Trick Us?
- Emotion Hacking – Fear, anger, and sadness override logic
- Repetition – Lies repeated often start to feel true
- Fake Consensus – It seems like "everyone" believes it
- Gaslighting – Making you doubt reality or your memory
- Mimicry – They pose as regular people
💰 Who Funds Them?
Not Farms are often backed by:
- Political parties
- Billionaires
- Corporations protecting profit
- Foreign governments weakening democracy
- Extremist groups spreading hate
🔐 How Can We Protect Ourselves & Our Loved Ones?
For Everyone:

- ✅ Ask “Who posted this? Why?”
- ✅ Check the source before sharing
- ✅ Report and block trolls
- ✅ Don’t engage — they want your attention

- 🤝 Fact-check with friends or mentors
- 📚 Learn media literacy — no one is immune
For Seniors & Caregivers:

- 📞 Encourage real-world conversations
- 👨👩👧 Assist with privacy and settings
- 📘 Share trustworthy news sources
🌱 A Message to Youth
You grew up in a pandemic, surrounded by screens and ads. You've been manipulated from the moment you could scroll. But here's the truth:
You have power. You have vision. You can resist manipulation and help others too.
Use your voice. Create art. Tell stories. Help elders. Connect offline. If you're tired — rest. That’s resistance, too.
