The Power of Art

The Power of Art: When Walls Speak Louder Than Words

Art has a way of speaking that words often cannot. It can provoke, inspire, comfort, and disrupt—all at the same time. Every brushstroke, every stencil, every installation carries the potential to challenge the status quo, ignite debate, and shine light on issues that society sometimes tries to ignore.

Take Banksy’s latest mural outside London’s Royal Courts of Justice. Overnight, a judge in wig and robes appears to strike a protester with a gavel. The protester lies on the ground clutching a blood-stained placard. It’s raw. It’s confronting. It’s impossible to ignore.

Within hours, people were buzzing—on social media, in newsrooms, in casual conversations—because this work of art captures something urgent: the tension between authority and activism, between rules and justice, between silence and speaking out.

Art like this reminds us of its enduring power:

  • Art provokes thought. It makes us question the world around us. Why is this happening? Who benefits? Who suffers?
  • Art sparks conversation. From coffee tables to courtrooms, a single image can create waves of discussion about ethics, policy, and human rights.
  • Art transcends language. A mural, a painting, or a sculpture communicates across barriers of nationality, age, and language. Its message is immediate, visceral, and emotional.
  • Art can challenge authority. History is full of artists who dared to question governments, corporations, and societal norms. Their work is remembered long after the news cycles end.

In a world where so much is filtered, curated, and sanitized, art cuts through the noise. It reminds us that ideas are not just for headlines—they are for hearts and minds.

So, whether it’s a mural on a wall, a sculpture in a park, or a street performance that stops traffic, remember: art has power. The power to wake us up, to unite us, and to make us see the world differently.

Let’s celebrate art that challenges us, that makes us uncomfortable, that forces us to think. Because sometimes, the loudest voice in the room is not a speech—it’s a piece of art.

Letter to the Young Ones Who Stop to Talk

🌈 A Letter to the Young Ones Who Stop to Talk
By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

Lately, while painting my mural, I’ve had the honour of meeting some truly beautiful young souls.

You stop.
You look.
You speak.
You share.

And in those moments, something sacred happens.

So many of you are carrying more than anyone should.
You’ve seen things on the internet no one should ever see.
You’re growing up in a world that feels confusing, violent, and often unfair.
You’re doing your best to make sense of it, to stay kind, and to survive.

This letter is for you.

💌 Dear Beautiful Souls,

Thank you for stopping by.
For saying hello.
For admiring the mural.
For talking with me—really talking.

Every time you share your story, your kindness, your struggle, your curiosity…
you give me hope.

The world right now can feel so heavy.
So broken.
Sometimes it seems like cruelty is winning. But then you show up.
And I remember that love still lives.

I’ve seen storms.
I’ve lost people I love, including a trans family member to suicide.
I know how grief, fear, and injustice can weigh on your heart.
I see the “catch and release” cycles, the violent headlines, the deep wrongs in our systems.
I’ve seen how the internet, once filled with promise, is now flooded with darkness.

You didn’t create this mess, but you’re doing your best to live in it.
And I want you to know:

🕊️ You Matter.

Not for what you produce.
Not for how many followers you have.
Not for your appearance or performance.

You matter because you are human.
You feel. You care. You dream.

🌱 You Are Allowed to Grow.

You don’t have to have it all figured out.
You can change your mind.
You can make mistakes.
You can rest.

Tears are not weakness—they’re truth, and they’re healing.

🌈 You Are Not Alone.

There are still people who care.
Maybe you find them in unexpected places:
A stranger, a mural artist, a kind soul who simply says, “You good?”

Keep those threads. They are lifelines.

🔥 You Are Powerful.

Not because you yell the loudest—
but because you witness, feel, and refuse to numb out.

You care in a world that teaches you not to.
That’s power.

Some days, I want to hide.
But I keep showing up because of you.
Because I believe in your future.
Because I’ve seen your spark.

“Even a small light can guide others through the dark.”
— Yours might be the only light someone sees today.

So shine, softly or boldly. However you can.
You're doing better than you know.
And I’m so grateful you stopped to talk.

With all my heart,
Tina Winterlik (Zipolita)

New Mural NEEDED at Maritime Museum & More

Updated May 18 2017  See Update at the bottom

------------------
As someone who has lived in Kitsilano off and on the last 20 years I have seen this mural at the Vancouver Maritime Museum countless time and I mostly ignored it. I never found it interesting...it always bothered me but I didn't do anything.

But now it really bothers me. Look at it.
The First Nations are on the outside and look at how they are depicted in comparison to the the Military dudes. Pleasee help I might vomit...

There's not a single woman represented.

This mural was created in 1986, probably for Expo 86 and it HAS GOT TO GO!!

So I have sent an email and I hope I get a response. This was part of it...

Please for Canada150+  and for Reconciliation change it to reflect the truth. We know so much more now. Please...that whole area ..has a history no one acknowledges..and yet we occupy it. I challenge you to do something about it for Reconciliation. I hope you will consider my suggestion. Thanks

Here is a write up on it.

Today I saw they were trying to raise money for this

and I suggested on the Facebook page a new mural instead.
Here is part of the letter I wrote to them, let's see if the respond.
I was wondering if you are planning on a new mural. I mentioned on Instagram a while back but heard nothing. The mural should represent Indigenous people bigger or as big as the colonialists and should feature women too!. That mural is 1986 and it is a very visual and I think (negative )influence on all who pass.

Please for Canada150+  and for Reconciliation change it to reflect the truth. We know so much more now. Please...that whole area ..has a history no one acknowledges..and yet we occupy it. I challenge you to do something about it for Reconciliation. I hope you will consider my suggestion. Thanks

I know some people who do murals, create beautiful Coast Salish designs and I have reached out to a few. I did a lot of research on Coast Salish designs as well.

Sharifah is working on a mural and I know she did one for the NEC

Maynard Johnny Jr creates beautiful Coast Salish Designs

Kim is an excellent artist and she went through the Reconciliation Carving with me.

Audrey Siegl

Justine Wallace is an excellent artist and she went through the Reconciliation Carving with me.

I hope to hear back from everyone, most especially you, very soon.
Sincerely, Tina Winterlik

Update May 18 2017: So Vancouver Maritime Museum Responded.
Here is what they said.

So I am going to put a proposal together...I imagine anyone can. So if you have  great idea go for it or maybe we can all work together. Let's see what happens.
