Housing Struggles, Social Assistance, and Family Dynamics: A Hidden Crisis in BC

Housing affordability is one of the most pressing issues facing British Columbians today, and it’s affecting more families than ever. As the cost of living rises, many people find themselves moving in with relatives to make ends meet. While sharing a home can help ease financial burdens, it often creates new challenges that many don’t talk about.

The Impact of Rent and Social Assistance

When a family member moves in, the question of rent often arises. If they pay rent, it could change the tax situation for the homeowner, who may have to report rental income. On the other hand, if they don’t pay rent, it can lead to tension in the household, especially when financial expectations aren’t clear.

For those on social assistance, the situation becomes even more complicated. Social assistance programs consider housing costs when determining eligibility and benefits. If someone is living with family and not paying rent, the system may assume they have lower living expenses and reduce the amount of assistance they receive. This can make it difficult for individuals to qualify for adequate support, even when they’re in a difficult financial situation.

Family Tension and Housing Insecurity

One of the less discussed aspects of shared housing is the emotional strain it places on families. Homeowners, particularly those struggling to maintain their own financial stability, may feel pressured or resentful when a relative moves in without contributing to household expenses. This can create a sense of imbalance and lead to conflicts that aren’t easily resolved.

At the same time, those moving in with relatives may feel unwelcome or guilty, knowing they are adding to the household’s burden. It’s a situation that many people face but don’t openly talk about, and it highlights the need for better housing solutions in British Columbia.

Promised Support for Homeowners: Where Are the Programs?

There has been talk of government programs offering financial support to homeowners who open their doors to relatives or roommates, with figures like $40,000 in assistance being mentioned. However, there’s little evidence that these programs are reaching those who need them. Many homeowners are unaware of how to access these funds, or they find that the criteria are too restrictive, leaving them without the help they need.

A Systemic Issue in BC

The reality is that these shared housing situations are part of a larger, systemic problem. As housing costs skyrocket, more people are forced to live in overcrowded or uncomfortable arrangements, relying on family to get by. But without clear financial boundaries or adequate government support, these arrangements often lead to stress and conflict.

Social assistance programs should reflect the complexities of real life. When a person lives with family, it doesn’t always mean their living costs are low, nor should the system assume that relatives are financially responsible for one another. The lack of affordable housing options and meaningful government programs only exacerbates the problem, leaving families to navigate difficult and emotionally charged situations on their own.

What Can Be Done?

There are several steps that could help ease the strain on families:

1. Increase Awareness of Support Programs: Homeowners and renters alike need more information on any available financial assistance programs, with clearer application processes and fewer barriers to access.

2. Reform Social Assistance Policies: Social assistance programs should better reflect the realities of shared housing, where living with family doesn’t necessarily mean financial stability.

3. Encourage Open Dialogue in Families: It’s important for families sharing a home to communicate clearly about financial expectations and contributions to avoid misunderstandings and tension.

A Call to Action

If you or someone you know is struggling with housing or social assistance issues, reach out to local advocacy groups or housing organizations for advice. These challenges are not unique, and together, we can push for more effective solutions to help British Columbiansl ive with dignity and stability.

Painting Wolf Demo #1 to #3 by Zipolita

Helloooooooooo!!

So for me, painting is art therapy. Some of you may know I was on the computer so much this last week, trying to prepare an application for something special I wanted. I finally submitted it. Now I need stress relief!!

So I got a new tripod (I have wanted one for a really long time) that can be mounted on almost anything and I rigged it to photograph my painting, so I can show my progress.

I goofed it though as the photos were not cropped exactly the same. I will do better tomorrow when I try to repeat this and every day that I paint so I can show you my progress.

Okay here I updated it. Just watch this and you will be up to date. Keep watching.

You can also see the painting as it progresses here. I put it on Facebook because I know some people can not view the video.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING-Let me take you for a walk!

Thanksgiving- a beautiful time for giving thanks! But it can be hard, sometimes you can not be with the ones you loved, maybe your parents or partner have passed.

Maybe everyone is far away or you can not go to them. Maybe you are broke..I know a lot of people are and the whole Thanksgiving thing can be stressful because you can't afford all the fixings.

This holiday is all about gratitude. Take time to remind yourself what a beautiful world we live in. (I have to!) Take a walk in nature and give thanks for that!! Just to have freedom, clean air, green grass, trees, and if you live by the ocean or rivers that's a super bonus. WE ARE SO BLESSED!!

To be truthful Thanksgiving can be a sad time for me, while the leaves start to fall and it's very beautiful...the leaves are dying...and on the dark and dreary days like yesterday it can be depressing. This is the time of year that my dad passed, I was eleven. I remember after the funeral my aunt sending me out to rake the big maple leaves and telling us to go jump in them. We tried to have fun..but how could we.

What ever is stressing you, please remember, you are NOT alone. Many others are suffering or feeling the same grief, disappointment, stresses that you are feeling. You are not alone. Remember that!

You have to force yourself. Sometimes, you have to! When it's dark and dreary do what I did, snuggle in, put on a good movie and remember tomorrow is a better day!!

And it is, today here in Kitsilano it's a gorgeous day and we will go for a lovely walk soon. I took the same walk a week ago and this is what I saw.

Come for a walk with me and HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
Remember you are not alone!  Sending love and light to you all!!

For Mikey- and everyone who loved him.
If you are wondering about the gargoyle...My friend passed a couple of years ago from pancreatic cancer. Very very sad, we were the same age and we really miss him.  Anyways he had a couple little gargoyles in his apartment. He was a very kind man and let me sublet that apartment when he went away to work and it helped me and Angel immensely.  While out for my walk I saw this gargoyle in a tree in someone's yard and snapped a couple of photos as it reminded me of him. I like to remember him and this is little sign he's still around and there if we need him. So if you are wondering that's why. Miss you Mikey!

Keep An Open Mind

So let's see where to start....I have bad cold, made a lot worse by what happened this week. Stress it is definitely is a monster.

So let's back up a bit. You know how people often look down on people on Social Assistance/Welfare and shake their heads and think something negative like why can't they get a job ...

Well now I am fortunate, I just finished my course at Emily Carr and I also got a little steady job for a couple a days a week to help me when I'm in between Web Design/ Mobile App gigs.

I was adding it up the other day...including 6 months of my pregnancy I have been off and on the system about 5 years and I hated every minute as it's just stressful. It's super hard to get it and then it's hard to get off...remember I have been supporting my 11 year old daughter by myself and I have no parents and I have no family nearby. Now people have stepped up to the plate and helped out occasionally and I truly appreciative but I want to share something with you.

Let me tell you about my week. I worked and then had a day off and then the next day I went to a funeral of someone I loved very much. My daughter had a cold and I kept her home from school 2 days...if I was working full-time or when she was younger I couldn't do that without help. Childcare in Vancouver is super expensive.

I got paid...and this is the part I want you to realize..
I had a huge hassle trying to cash my cheque...because it was a first cheque and my employer doesn't have direct deposit because it costs money and he only has a few employees.

I walked miles...with my cold from one bank to another and back trying to resolve this. Getting sicker and more stressed.  Now it all worked out but don't you see how the system is set up to screw the poor.

You finally get a job. Then someone you love dies or something happens that makes you vulnerable, then your kid is sick- and if they are little you need daycare...and you get sick....buses are so expensive...you have no money because you can't cash the frigging check...at your bank with out the holding if 5 days...

you go to bank where the check was issued but they want to talk to the person that wrote it...that person isn't available till later...you walk back and forth...back and forth...meanwhile sad and missing the loved one that passed...sick with this stupid cold...stressed because you can't cash they cheque...the buses are expensive so your walking...your energy is zapped and ...well that is the sh_t that can happen to people.

Now what if that person gets really sick now...misses work...loses the new job. I am fine so that won't happen to me as I am going to rest all day...but what about the person who gets screwed like this...

This is how it happens people. This is how people fall through cracks and end up poor and homeless because the banks make your life hell. Why do they have so much power...why do we give them our money. It's dum.

Now the really annoying part and that may also lead to illness/job loss etc... is lack of good food...all the energy that I normally use to walk and go get my groceries is gone because I used it up walking miles to the bank and the cold has zapped me...and I didn't mention it but I also went to the doctor but the wait was so long I had to leave and come back...

So do you see...do you see how little sh_t like this can happen and that it isn't one thing...that tears a person down...people are resislant but life can really give you sh_t kicking sometimes...even though you are trying so hard...but it's exhausting.

Think about that next time,  before you think thoughts like "why aren't they working" or "why are they so lazy" or ...whatever...

Not only that...the doctor was very kind but he did offer me some kind of Valium thingy to help me relax and then the pain in my ears would go away  and other sinus spray and antibotic...to combat the pain in my ears. I thought I had a really bad sinus infection but we figured it out that I was probably clenching my jaw really hard.

I said I would pass on the Valium and asked would it be okay just to have some wine and he said that I could take those meds with wine.   In the end he said I might want to wait to buy them as the cold should clear up and by relaxing the pain in my ears would get better.
(the spray cost $45 and the antibiotic $25)  I didn't buy either(but what about the person that does, they work so hard and then end up spending it on medicine...that sucks)

But see...what if I took the valium...yuck...then I would be all groggy well I just want to show you what happens to people and how some decisions really mess people up.

So since I was able to cash my check I bought a big bottle of lavender...which is why I think I got sick in the first place....because I was out, because I had no money. ...and I grabbed a bottle of wine and came home, watched a video, had a drink and went to bed. Today I am feeling better.

This is not written very well because I am still sick and tired and I am heading back to bed but do you see it now...do see how peoples lives can get all f__k'd up.  It's not one thing...it is one thing piling and piling on top of the other.

I want to make a little side note. After I got the check cashed I took the bus...and while riding I saw man that had a serious disability but he was coping well and it was a reality check that we can overcome huge challenges.

So my point is keep an open mind. Don't judge that single mom or that homeless kid or that addict so harsh...you don't know what happened to them...instead say a prayer for them, think a nice thought and project that their life will get much better soon. Keep an open mind because you never know if one day this sh_t could happen to you...because we are all the same. We are one!

Check out this Tedtalks, it's very interesting!

What Makes You Feel Beautiful?

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2014

So something I have never really talked about on my blog is bodyweight.  I have struggled ....oh my God how I have struggled....but mostly in the past...I am happy with my body image for the most part now...but it took years.

The first time I thought I was fat was when I was about 12 maybe and I had a little tiny tummy bulge and a friend of my brother's called it a spare tire..until then it never occurred to me. That started it..I had this friend in school whose mom had a yoga tv show and this girl did fasting and they suggested  try it. Insanity. It started me on this terrible rollercoaster of not eating for a day or two and then of course as soon as you cave I would bing.

My weight fluctuated most of my teens between 5-20 lbs over what is considered "normal" by those stupid charts...

I remember I had all these stupid diaries...they were diet diaries,,...every page was crossed out..tomorrow I will start again...

In my 20's I went on this liquid, chocolate bar diet, you know those dum meal replacement things...oh I lost weight alright, I went down to like 105 and I was so happy, but then something happened, I had to quit my job due to tendonitis  and I was depressed and I also quit smoking(a very nasty habit that I am so glad I beat) and I gained....I was 150lbs. It's hard to believe looking back.

I remember how critical all my friends from back then were of people who were not as slim as they thought they should be. I remember one saying "I would kill myself if I got that fat!!"  What a terrible sad thought...

Needless to say I had to get away from all that and I moved to the Kootenays and started college as a mature student. I met someone and he didn't mine my love handles and with routine of school and being loved for who I was, I did slim down again.

When I came back to the coast and went to school here well living on student budget and packing heavy photography equipment everywhere I got pretty slim again.

And I felt good for a long time about my weight. I didn't diet anymore I just tried to eat healthy. When I got pregnant at 40 with my little cherub I gained about 45 lbs but it was all good...after I had her it took a few years but it all came off.

It was when my mom passed away (we'd moved back to the Kootenays) that I got really really thin, every day I would shovel snow to get rid of the stress of my mom being sick and then when I was in mourning after she passed. I was like a 100lbs.

One day, I think it was Angel's birthday I looked in the mirror ...at my neck and YUCK!! I thought, my God I look awful...my boobs were all saggy and seriously FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE...I thought I am too thin.

When my mom was alive mom would always tease and call me "Ana" short for Anorexia...she was trying to make me recognized in the nicest, gentlest way to cut it out and eat more.

Anyways, that was a turning point. I like to have a little meat on me...and if I gain a bit, hey I know it's okay I can walk it off.  I never count calories or anything...I just try to eat healthy and  walk a lot.

Sometimes things have been tough and I wouldn't eat so well, so that my kid could but hopefully that won't happen any more.

Do I have a tummy, yes, but I don't care anymore. I am so glad to be free of all that ugly stress. It worries me to see so many girls and women still struggling with this...

I am so glad people are talking about it, I've spoken with my daughter about it and I think she understands it all. She is just in her tweens and I've shown her many videos on the topic, just as I will show her this one.

I'm not sure where we are in this battle with the media and our culture it is all still really warped out. How can we teach people to love themselves. With education and talking about it, with videos, and apps about medititation...

It's going to take a lot of work...we have a long long way to go but it's great to see videos like this. Thanks for sharing your stories, thanks for the poem Natalie, thanks Soulpancake....keep up the good work.

Now Repeat After Me. I LOVE MYSELF JUST THE WAY I AM!! I AM BEAUTIFUL!!
Because your really are. We all are!!...

I tried to find some old photos to show you but there's nothing on this computer...so they must be in storage

You know for a lot of people "Mondays Suck!"  Fortunately not for me. :D

I thought since people might be a little stressed as Christmas in Canada/US can be stressful, and you may have been shopping and baking cookies and decorating all weekend, now your tired and the week hasn't even started, maybe you need something to brighten your day.

I'm up early and I happened to come across this video. I have never seen it and I found it very amusing. I loved the Muppet Show when I was growing up. In my teens I loved Queen. I also happen to be Bohemian so I find this a really great video and will share it with Angel when she gets up.

Well here you go. It's not Christmasy but it's well done and funny. I found it looking for Muppet Christmas shows. Enjoy. Happy Holidays!! (They are on the way...soon :) Just 14 sleeps to Christmas!

Finding Balance

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Hi Everyone, So you may have noticed that things look a little different around here.

I am joining all my blogs together, so it's like a website.

Why? you may ask.

I am seeking balance. I'm tired and I have a bad cold. I've been blogging alot and building my Tina'z Social Media Workshop. It's alot and then I take care of my little girl, who I homeschool, 24/7.

So the way I plan to do it is blog 1x a week on each blog, as some of my blogs get neglected, and they shouldn't. Also I need to make time for my Workshops. So this is my way of having my cake and eat it.

It's a beautiful day here today in Vancouver and I am going to see someone I love dearly who is in the hospital.

Another way of finding balance. I haven't seen this person in over a year. They will be 90 soon, I can't put this off.  Shameful, but she moved and well there's been alot of other factors, we moved, we had colds, we had lessons, no money, but everything is coming together and I am really looking forward to our Adventure today!!

I appreciate a little prayer and positive thought from you for our journey and for my loved one please! Thanks, that's helps.

Okay so stay tuned, as I find balance and share all the things I love and cherish and hold dear to my heart with YOU. Have a great day! Big hugs all!
