How Stunningly Beautiful

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

How Stunningly Beautiful this is. This is being One with Nature. Absolutely Gorgeous. These peoples future is being threatened by a hydro electric dam. Share this, tell people, let`s STOP this!!

For 6 years, Hans Sylvester photographed the people of the Omo River in Ethiopia. Their bodies are their canvases...

Quoting from this website
"A way of life threatened

The tribal people of the Omo Valley keep cattle, sheep and goats but their unique pastoral way of life is sadly threatened by the modern world and the march of development.

A hydroelectric dam, known as Gibe III, is planned to be constructed across the Omo River Valley and according to Survival International this will cause the threatened end to the way of life of some 200,000 Ethiopian tribal people."

Quoting Amazon:
In this ambitious work, Hans Silvester turns his photographic eye toward ancient Africa, the birthplace of humanity. Silvester was essentially adopted by his subjects during his travels, and his stunning color photographs present a rare, intimate view of their world.

The first volume of this deluxe two-volume set presents the everyday lives of the Omo people, their rituals, parades, children’s games, and even their battles. In the second volume, each photograph becomes a masterpiece of abstract art, revealing close-ups of the tribes’ traditional body paintings. Silvester’s accompanying text traces his journey to the Horn of Africa, revealing the fascinating beauty of a world now in danger of extinction.

About the Author

Hans Silvester was born in Germany in 1938 and took his first photographs at the age of twelve. He became a master photographer and world traveler. His many books include Cats in the Sun and Lavender: Fragrance of Provence (Abrams).

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. In this stunning collection of photographs, Silvester (Ethiopia: Peoples of the Omo Valley) celebrates the unique art of the Surma and Mursi tribes of the Omo Valley, on the borders of Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan. These nomadic people have no architecture or crafts with which to express their innate artistic sense. Instead, they use their bodies as canvases, painting their skin with pigments made from powdered volcanic rock and adorning themselves with materials obtained from the world around them—such as flowers, leaves, grasses, shells and animal horns. The adolescents of the tribes are especially adept at this art, and Silvester's superb photographs show many youths who, imbued with an exquisite sense of color and form, have painted their beautiful bodies with colorful dots, stripes and circles, and encased themselves in elaborate arrangements of vegetation and found objects. This art is endlessly inventive, magical and, above all, fun. In his brief text, Sylvester worries that as civilization encroaches on this largely unexplored region, these people will lose their delightful tradition. 160 color photographs. (Apr.)

Product Description

The scene of tribal conflicts and guerrilla incursions, Ethiopia’s Omo Valley is also home to fascinating rites and traditions that have survived for thousands of years. The nomadic people who inhabit the valley share a gift for body painting and elaborate adornments borrowed from nature, and Hans Silvester has captured the results in a series of photographs made over the course of numerous trips. 160 color photographs

I Believe She's Amazing Flash Mob

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

I love Flashmobs, lots of times they make me cry because they just make me `feel so good!`  There is just something about everyone coming together, and the dancing, it`s just really powerful, inspiring, AMAZING

This one is extra Special, read below.

http://www.IBelieveShesAmazing.com Kim MacGregor organized this flash mob of 200 dancers to launch the "feel good" movement, "I Believe She's Amazing" in honor of her friend Erika Heller who passed away May 28th, 2009 at 31 yrs. old...this is her living legacy.

The amazing choreographers and dancers pulled this together in just one-6 hr rehearsal the day before the shoot.

(The song is I Believe by Yolanda Adams, from the soundtrack to the movie Honey starring Jessica Alba.)

Energy Security / Climate Action

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Listen to what Adriane Carr has to say about Energy Security and Climate Action

Climate change is not just an environmental issue. It is an economic, social, and global security issue.

It is the most significant issue of our times -- despite the fact that the other major parties are not seriously discussing it in this election. Our action or inaction now will have repercussions planet-wide, for generations.

The majority of Canadians want Canada to take the action needed to meet our international obligations on climate change. We want Canada to be a global leader, not a laggard. By investing aggressively in energy conservation and renewable energy by acting now we strengthen our economy. We improve our chances of averting catastrophic climate change. We put ourselves on the path of achieving long-term energy security.

As a Green MP in Parliament I will be the champion in Ottawa that Vancouver needs in its pursuit of the "greenest city" vision to be a global leader in climate action

This would include pushing the federal government to:

Become a global leader in combating climate change, leaving no stone unturned in finding ways to conserve energy, reduce greenhouse gas emission, and ramp up the development and use of renewable energy. That includes putting an economy-wide price on carbon to level the playing field and entice investment in renewables.

End the subsidies to the oil and gas industry and use the funds instead to expand federal programs of specific importance to Vancouver such as for energy retrofits of buildings, including homes, low income housing, schools and hospitals, and a national solar roof program.

Create a secure "green bonds" investment program to raise funds for cities to improve mass transit and undertake other programs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

In the end, if we make the right decisions now, we will end up with a stronger economy, greater energy security, healthier communities and the satisfaction of knowing that we did our very best to minimize the impacts of climate change.

You've got the power. Vote Carr.

It's a New Day! Vote Canada!!

The Mountain

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

WOW. This is truly AMAZING.This is what we have to live for, this is what we have to give THANKS for, this is Why we have to WORK TOGETHER, to SAVE this INCREDIBLE GORGEOUS WORLD

The Mountain from Terje Sorgjerd on Vimeo.
This was filmed between 4th and 11th April 2011. I had the pleasure of visiting El Teide.

Spain´s highest mountain @(3718m) is one of the best places in the world to photograph the stars and is also the location of Teide Observatories, considered to be one of the world´s best observatories.

The goal was to capture the beautiful Milky Way galaxy along with one of the most amazing mountains I know El Teide. I have to say this was one of the most exhausting trips I have done. There was a lot of hiking at high altitudes and probably less than 10 hours of sleep in total for the whole week. Having been here 10-11 times before I had a long list of must-see locations I wanted to capture for this movie, but I am still not 100% used to carrying around so much gear required for time-lapse movies.

A large sandstorm hit the Sahara Desert on the 9th April (http://bit.ly/g3tsDW) and at approx 3am in the night the sandstorm hit me, making it nearly impossible to see the sky with my own eyes.

Interestingly enough my camera was set for a 5 hour sequence of the milky way during this time and I was sure my whole scene was ruined. To my surprise, my camera had managed to capture the sandstorm which was backlit by Grand Canary Island making it look like golden clouds. The Milky Way was shining through the clouds, making the stars sparkle in an interesting way. So if you ever wondered how the Milky Way would look through a Sahara sandstorm, look at 00:32.

Jesus Christ Superstar

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

My sister and her husband took me to see this Jesus Christ Superstar when I was about 10 I think, I must say it had a profound effect on me. It had just come out and that was 1973, WOW, nearly 40 years ago.

It really is an incredible production, the music is beautiful and it really tells the story of Jesus in such a beautiful sad way.

I have the video, I may watch it today. I've watched most of it with my child, I edit parts(the lashings) I like her to have a broad understanding of all religions, and this is the one I am most familiar with.

I'm not a practicing Catholic, I do believe in God and I'm spiritual but my main motto is "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" it's so simple, treat others as you want to be treated.

Anyways, you can watch the rest of the videos on Youtube or rent the movie.

Last year I was in Oaxaca, I took my daughter to the Church of Santa Domingo, a 500 year old church covered in gold. We sat thru part of the mass, (too long for my little girl to sit still). It was really special.

This year is much different, it's about Easter Eggs and spending time with family and enjoying the day. We could go to church, but just watching this movie, sort of brings it all home for me.

There's a saying "You can take the girl out of the church, but you can't take the church out of the girl."

I stopped going to church when I was 14, but I still pray alot and I have recieved so many miracles, too many to count.

I count my blessings all the time. And I am thankful that I have an open mind. That I have been able to expose myself and my child to lots of different enviroments and beliefs.

There is no one right way. We just have to all work together, to get along, to strive for Peace.

Peace be with you!!

Easter Beagle- My Fave Easter Show

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

This is one of, if not my Favorite Easter Show. I just love the scene where Snoopy looks into the eggs and sees the bunnies dancing, I kept that memory for a long time, and when I saw it as an adult, I was like, Wow, that's where that memory comes from

Hope you all have a fabulous Easter, as my little girl said, just 2 days to Easter, and I said "Just one sleep" and she said "Hey, today is Easter Eve"

So we are colouring eggs today, if you are too have a fabulous time.

Today we are just using food colouring and vinegar, we went to buy the pack last night but they wanted $5.

Yikes, a few days ago they were just $2.99.

Anyways, I looked it up on the web and it says it should work, so we will give it a go and show you our results later.

Why were those voices so badly under-represented?

Sandy's investigation began at the 2009 Women's Campaign School (sponsored by the Canadian Women Voters Congress) in Vancouver
