 A stern warning: if you come to Canada, respect the community you are entering.

What happened in Guelph this weekend should concern all of us. Vandalism, violence, property damage and dangerous behaviour aren't harmless partying. They affect residents, businesses, emergency workers and everyone who has to deal with the aftermath.

Canada welcomes students, visitors and newcomers from around the world. But coming here comes with responsibilities.

If you deliberately break the law and cause serious trouble, expect consequences. And for foreign nationals, serious criminal offences can have immigration consequences, including possible removal from Canada.

This isn't about someone's nationality. It's about behaviour.

There seems to be a growing lack of respect for other people, for property and for the communities we live in.

Come here to study. Come here to work. Come here to build a life. Enjoy yourself.

But if you come here to cause destruction, don't expect Canada to simply look the other way.

Respect the community. Follow the law. Take responsibility for your actions.
