Lineage, Memory & Survival

 πŸŒΏ Lineage, Memory & Survival

When I was taking a Carving and Reconciliation course at Langara, some of the men laughed about dating when they were young — or “snagging” as they called it πŸ˜πŸ˜‚.

They said sometimes you’d see someone you liked… and then your Aunty or Mom would step in:
πŸ‘‰ “That’s your cousin.”

πŸ’‘ Those teachings were protection. They kept the family lines safe, and they carried wisdom about lineage and balance.

πŸ’” What Was Broken

But then came the F*CKING Residential Schools.
Family trees torn apart. Names stolen. Kinship systems shattered.

And not just here. Across history, humanity has seen:

  • Cousins marrying unknowingly.
  • Women forced into marriages.
  • Slavery.
  • Violence against women on a massive scale.

🧬 What Sperm Carries

Every act of violence, every broken lineage, every trauma — it doesn’t vanish.
Science calls it epigenetics.
Elders call it memory.

It lives in the sperm.
It lives in the eggs.
It lives in us.

🌟 The Miracle

And yet — here we are.
Alive. Breathing. Continuing.

We carry scars.
But we also carry resilience.

We are proof that survival is stronger than destruction.

πŸ’ A Question for Today

What wisdom will we choose to pass forward?
What wounds will we choose to heal so the next generations don’t have to carry them?

From Dot-Com Crash to AI Layoffs:

From Dot-Com Crash to AI Layoffs: What’s Really Happening in Vancouver?

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

History is repeating itself — and this time, it's hitting Vancouver hard.

The Dot-Com Crash 2.0?

In the early 2000s, the dot-com bubble burst after a frenzy of overinvestment in tech startups. Thousands of workers lost jobs as companies folded overnight.

Fast forward to 2024–2025, and we're seeing the same cycle — but with AI leading the charge. Massive tech layoffs at companies like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon have affected tens of thousands of workers globally. Even software engineers, once considered “safe,” are being let go.

Vancouver’s Tech Scene Feels the Impact

As Canada's “Silicon Valley North,” Vancouver is caught in this tech quake. Companies like Thinkific and Appnovation have laid off significant portions of their staff. Local engineers, developers, and creative professionals are feeling anxious, especially within Vancouver’s highly diverse tech workforce, which includes many South Asian, East Asian, and international professionals.

What’s worse? It’s not just tech. Universities, retail stores, and community programs are also facing cuts, painting a wider picture of economic instability.

What This Means: Prepare, Reflect, Rebuild

This moment is about more than just job losses — it’s a wake-up call. Many people are realizing that chasing corporate stability may not offer the security it once promised. So what can we do?

  • Build Local Resilience: Strengthen community ties, share resources, and support one another.
  • Return to the Land: Create gardens, learn to grow food, build with natural materials — think Indigenous Green, not Corporate Green.
  • Rethink Our Values: Ask yourself — what do I really need to live well? Is the endless hustle worth it?
  • Prepare for Change: Diversify skills, learn to live with less, and stay informed.

The Big Picture

These layoffs and economic shifts are not just temporary hiccups — they’re signals. We’re entering a time of transformation, where people must look beyond money and tech for stability. We can draw inspiration from Indigenous wisdom, regenerative practices, and community-driven solutions.

Let’s support each other and choose a path that respects people, the Earth, and future generations.

If you found this post helpful, please share it. Let’s start the conversation about how we rebuild smarter, stronger, and more connected than before.

Survival 101: How to Build a Shelter in the Wild

Survival 101: How to Build a Shelter in the Wild

Introduction
Exposure to extreme weather can be deadly—hypothermia can set in within minutes in cold conditions, and overheating can be just as dangerous. A well-built shelter provides warmth, protection, and a safe place to rest. In this post, we’ll cover different types of survival shelters and how to build them with natural materials.

Step 1: Choosing the Right Location

Before building, pick a safe and strategic spot:
Avoid low-lying areas (cold air settles in valleys, and water may pool).
Look for natural windbreaks (trees, rock formations).
Stay near resources (water, firewood, food sources).
Check for hazards (falling branches, animal tracks, flood zones).

πŸ’‘ Tip: If lost, build where rescuers can see you—open areas or near a recognizable landmark.

Step 2: Types of Survival Shelters & How to Build Them

1. Lean-To Shelter (Quick & Easy)

Best for mild weather and temporary stays.

🌿 Find a sturdy branch and lean it against a tree or rock.
🌿 Lay smaller branches along one side to form a slanted wall.
🌿 Cover with leaves, grass, or bark for insulation.
πŸ”₯ Add a fire in front to reflect heat inside.

2. Debris Hut (Best for Cold Conditions)

A fully enclosed, insulated shelter.

πŸ‚ Build a simple A-frame with two large sticks and a ridgepole across the top.
πŸ‚ Lay smaller sticks along the sides.
πŸ‚ Pile on thick layers of leaves, grass, or moss (the thicker, the warmer).
πŸ‚ Crawl inside and use extra debris as a sleeping mat for insulation.

3. Tarp or Poncho Shelter (If You Have Gear)

Fast and effective for rain protection.

πŸͺ’ Tie a rope between two trees at head height.
πŸ›– Drape a tarp, poncho, or emergency blanket over it.
πŸͺ¨ Secure the edges with rocks or stakes.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Use reflective material inside to retain heat.

4. Snow Cave (For Winter Survival)

Snow insulates well if built correctly.

❄️ Find a deep snowbank or pile up snow.
❄️ Dig a tunnel entrance leading into a small dome-shaped chamber.
❄️ Keep the floor elevated above the entrance to trap warm air.
❄️ Poke a ventilation hole at the top to prevent suffocation.

Step 3: Insulation & Finishing Touches

🌿 Flooring Matters: Lay down dry leaves, pine needles, or grass to prevent heat loss.
πŸ”₯ Heat Retention: Position the shelter to block wind and reflect fire heat inside.
πŸ›‘ Safety First: Never build too close to an open fire—smoke can fill small shelters.

Real-Life Applications

πŸ•️ Camping without a tent? Use a lean-to or tarp shelter.
❄️ Caught in a winter storm? Dig a snow cave.
🌲 Lost in the woods? Build a debris hut to stay warm overnight.

Survival 101: Finding & Purifying Water in the Wild

Survival 101: Finding & Purifying Water in the Wild

Introduction
Water is the most critical survival resource—humans can survive weeks without food but only a few days without water. Whether you’re lost in the wilderness or facing an emergency, knowing how to find and purify water can be the difference between life and death.

Step 1: Finding Water Sources

Look for these natural water sources:
Rivers & Streams – Flowing water is usually cleaner than stagnant water.
Lakes & Ponds – Can work, but require purification.
Rainwater – Safe to drink if collected cleanly.
Morning Dew – Collect on grass with cloth, then wring it out.
Tree Crotches & Rock Crevices – Sometimes hold rainwater.
Animal Trails & Insect Activity – Often lead to water sources.

πŸ’‘ Tip: Always look upstream for signs of contamination (dead animals, human activity).

Step 2: Filtering & Purifying Water

Even clear water can contain bacteria, viruses, or parasites. Here’s how to make it safe:

1. Boiling (Most Effective)

πŸ”₯ Bring water to a rolling boil for at least 1 minute (3 minutes at high altitudes).
πŸ”₯ Let it cool before drinking.

2. DIY Water Filtration

🌿 Simple Cloth Filter: Pour water through a clean cloth to remove debris.
πŸ₯€ Sand & Charcoal Filter:

  • Cut a bottle (or use a hollowed-out log).
  • Layer charcoal → sand → small rocks to trap dirt and bacteria.
  • Pour water through multiple times.

3. Sunlight Purification (SODIS Method)

☀️ Fill a clear plastic or glass bottle with water.
☀️ Place in direct sunlight for 6+ hours to kill bacteria.

4. Chemical Purification

πŸ’Š Use water purification tablets (iodine or chlorine).
πŸ’Š If unavailable, add 2 drops of bleach per liter of water, shake, and wait 30 minutes.

Step 3: Storing & Conserving Water

  • Use only when necessary – Ration wisely.
  • Store in clean containers – Avoid contamination.
  • Avoid excessive sweating – Rest in the shade to conserve hydration.

Real-Life Applications

🚢‍♂️ Lost while hiking? Look for downhill areas where water collects.
🌧️ Camping in the rain? Set up large leaves or tarps to collect rainwater.
πŸ”₯ No pot for boiling? Use hot rocks to heat water in a wooden bowl.

Green Ideas & Solutions

Great ideas here. We need to eat more kelp and we need to stop polluting out environment with fossil fuels.

Farming the Sea: why eating kelp is good for you and good for the environment from Patrick Mustain on Vimeo.

http://ecowatch.com/2016/04/10/ocean-farmers/2/
"Our farms function as storm-surge protectors, breaking up wave action to reduce the impact of hurricanes and rising tides. And they serve as artificial reefs, attracting more than 150 species of aquatic life. Sea horses, striped bass and grey seals come to eat, hide and thrive on our farms. My farm used to be a barren patch of ocean, now it’s a flourishing ecosystem. As fishermen, we’re no longer pillagers, hunting the last fish. We are a new generation of climate farmers who have joined the fight to restore our planet. We’re trying to break down the seawalls that separate our land-based and ocean-based food systems. Even the best land-based farms pollute, sending nitrogen into our waterways, so we use our kelp to capture that nitrogen, turn it into liquid fertilizers and send it back to organic farmers to grow their wonderful vegetables. When the nitrogen then runs back into Long Island Sound, we capture it again.

The idea is to build a bridge between land and sea in order to close the loop between our food systems. Too often our thinking stops at the water’s edge. A bridge is needed."

Who Lives in Harmony with the Planet?

Survival International has produced their own Television Ad and here is a sneak peak. I would love to go to the jungle and learn from them these people who know how to live in harmony with the jungle and Mother Earth.

I would especially love it if my child could go.

I know she would love it, she loves nature so much. The thing is right now the indigenous people are in terrible trouble fighting for survival from the outside world. Instead of learning from them we only continue with our lives turning our backs on there great wisdom and knowledge.

But let's step back and think for a moment...What if, ....what if for some bizarre reason...we have no electricity, what if we have no access to phones, computers, banking....nothing. How will we survive. How will our children survive. This is a serious question...ridiculous one may say...but you don't know, the earth is a pretty screwed up place and we don't know what the future holds.

Doesn't it make sense to stop what we are doing and value these people. Value their incredible knowledge and learn how to live in harmony with the earth. Something has to change because something is going to happen. Mother Earth is getting sicker all the time and for all we know a massive solar flare could wipe out our electricity. Here's a thought, how did you feel the last time the lights went out. What would you do if there was no more electricity. Pretty scary huh!!

These people live with no electricity and they are happy! We need to try to be more like them...we have a choice, what choice will we make?
