Mood Pills, Vitamins, and the Hidden Danger

🌿 A Pill for Every Problem? Not in My House

By Tina Winterlik aka Zipolita

📍  Mood Pills, Vitamins, and the Hidden Danger

Recently, Health Canada issued a warning about unauthorized "mood and stress" supplements sold online and in Alberta under the name Natrol DHEA Mood & Stress 25mg. Marketed as natural vitamins, they contained DHEA, a controlled substance in Canada linked to hormone imbalances, psychiatric issues, and even increased suicide risk.

These weren’t approved by Health Canada—but they were still sold to people desperate for relief.

I’ve lived through this story—from the inside.

💬 English | Anglais | Inglés

I watched my mom suffer—not just from chronic pain, but from the pills that were supposed to help her. She was prescribed so many. I remember her taking nine pills a day. She just wanted relief.

But I saw the damage. I knew I couldn’t stay.

At nearly 28, I left. I moved 9 hours away. I quit smoking, lost 35 pounds, and started over.

In 1999, after I lost my job at a mapping company, I flew to Rarotonga for six weeks—carrying a suitcase full of vitamins, still looking for a fix.

But when I became a mom, I let it all go. I was poor and alone, but I chose real food, clean water, walks, rest, and presence. We didn’t take vitamins. We avoided pills.

But my kid still struggled. Depression hit hard. A doctor gave them medication with this warning:

"May cause suicidal thoughts in people under 19."

And it did.
But they survived.

That’s why I speak up—because people are still being sold hope in a bottle. But healing takes more than a label. It takes truth, safety, and community.

He vivido algo muy similar.

When You Feel Small, But Keep Going Anyway

When You Feel Small, But Keep Going Anyway

Lately, I’ve been thinking about that scene from the movie Antz, where the evil grasshopper Hopper says something like, “If the ants ever figure out they outnumber us, we’re done.”

It stuck with me. Because right now, the world feels so upside-down. Dark, hungry, lonely days. People digging through garbage. People sleeping in doorways. And then there are folks in their 70s and 80s throwing big parties, going on cruises, concerts, vacations. And they’ll tell you, “At our age, what can we do?”

That’s what’s so depressing.

Somehow, we didn’t expect this. We worried about kids getting lost online, but now I see older folks spending hours on YouTube, TV, glued to tablets while the world burns. My friend’s dog—just a few years old—poops in the house because she won’t take him out sometimes. She has money, she’s capable… but she says he pooped so she won’t take him. Thankfully, the dog stays with someone else half the year while she’s in Mexico.

We let people get away with a lot by saying, “They’re old.” But sometimes, that’s just an excuse. I remember a Thanksgiving years ago when someone’s grandfather said something racist about Indigenous people. I was ready to say something, but my sister kicked me under the table. We stay silent because they're old. But that silence hurts.

And let’s talk about depression.

The last little while has been hell. It’s a little better today. We got our CPP. Mine is $275. Ridiculous. But it paid my bills. We scraped together enough for food. That’s a win, I guess.

But I asked my 76-year-old friend if he went outside today, and he got furious. Like, “Why would you ask me that? What kind of question is that?” And I was left shaken. I told another friend, same age as me, and she said she’d be mad if someone asked her that too.

Really? I’m just asking if you stepped outside into the light. Into the world.

Thankfully, I met this mental health nurse while painting the mural, and we became friends. He dropped by, and when I told him about it, we laughed. Not because it’s funny—but because sometimes it’s the only way to stop from crying. He said what I already knew: the defensiveness, the isolation—it’s depression.

Another friend of mine, just retired, is caring for her 85-year-old mom. I think she’s depressed too. She still drinks. Makes comments about her memory slipping. It scares me.

So yeah. Some days I feel small and helpless. But today, I’ve got a little bit of money. I’m going to clean, get a little more organized. I’m hanging on. I’m waiting for housing. Maybe the Competition Bureau will finally do something about the landlords and the rent gouging. I won a settlement recently—but to collect, I’d have to go to court. So what’s the point? I let it go. That’s the system.

That’s why it always feels like the big guy wins. But we have to keep the faith, don’t we?

And here’s the kicker:

Years ago, I paid into this little pension plan through the Canadian Commercial Workers Union. I worked at Lilydale. The company went under. Things got shuffled around. And now, I get a letter saying that when I turn 65, I’ll get $1.26 a month.

When I showed my friend, we laughed until we cried.

That’s how f***ed up things are.

But we have to keep going. For the kids, right?

(Yeah, that’s sarcasm.)

But also… not.

Because maybe it is for the kids. For the ones still growing up. The ones still learning how to survive this world we’re leaving them. Maybe they need to know someone saw it all clearly and still kept trying.

My heart is breaking...time for self care.

I need some self care. How about you?

I spent all yesterday tweeting about the fires in Fort McMurray

and then find out this

Then there's this article and I do not like the National Post it sensationalizes everything...

I can't believe there isn't like 10 Children's Mental Health & wellness workers stationed long term there all ready.

There are 2000 people living there, why wouldn't that be one of the first things implemented as soon as the possible considering the situation and what they are dealing with.

So sad, all these letters of love and the kids are still hurting so much.

Just sharing this. http://nctsn.org

Resource Parent Curriculum (RPC) Online
This eight-module curriculum package is designed to guide facilitators on how to run RPC workshops where participants (resource parents/foster parents) learn what trauma is, how trauma may impact children, and how their behaviors are often symptoms of those experiences. The curriculum also provides information on how to create a safe place, how to become an advocate for trauma-specific services and how to recognize and help prevent compassion fatigue. All are included in the downloadable modules, which are available for free! Browse and download the curriculum here. http://learn.nctsn.org/enrol/index.php?id=67

Shocking Farmer Suicide Epidemic

"India's shocking farmer suicide epidemic. Falling into a debt-trap and besieged by bad weather, thousands of farmers are taking their own lives each year. "

"In the last 20 years, nearly 300,000 farmers have ended their lives by ingesting pesticides or by hanging themselves. Maharashtra state - with 60,000 farmer suicides - tops the list."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmers'_suicides_in_India

In 2014, the National Crime Records Bureau of India reported 5,650 farmer suicides.[1] The highest number of farmer suicides were recorded in 2004 when 18,241 farmers committed suicide.[2] The farmers suicide rate in India has ranged between 1.4 to 1.8 per 100,000 total population, over a 10-year period through 2005.[3]

India is an agrarian country with around 60% of its people depending directly or indirectly upon agriculture. Farmer suicides account for 11.2% of all suicides in India.[1] Activists and scholars have offered a number of conflicting reasons for farmer suicides, such as monsoon failure, high debt burdens, genetically modified crops, government policies, public mental health, personal issues and family problems.[4][5][6] There are also accusation of states fudging the data on farmer suicides.[7]

National Crime Records Bureau says over 200,00 farmers in Punjab have committed suicide since 1997 due to the fact that they are heavily in debt and unable to repay their lenders.

Punjabi farmers are also going through a water crisis in which the Indian government has restricted water rights for irrigation, making it extremely inefficient and expensive for farmers to maintain their crops and land.

The Government has also allowed for the usage of unregulated pesticides and fertilizers to counterbalance the low productivity resulting in major health problems in the people of Punjab.

Why We Get Depressed by Shi! I needed this!

Very Powerful and Wise Words spoken so eloquently.  So grateful for this as I needed reminding. It's been a rough week. I quit my job. I had to but will not explain here, let's just say it was an unhealthy situation and I had to remove myself. That said, to be unemployed, even temporarily is scary. But when I put on my "happy face" I am not unemployed, I am just self employed again.

I feel the need to paint. I have lots of great ideas that I haven't been able to focus on because of work and life issues but now I am going to make time.

Depression exists for a reason.
Many of the great thinkers and artists of our time created light because they knew dark.

This is a wonderful video especially because we just saw Inside Out and that's a GREAT movie.

Really beautiful and the short Lava was also very moving.

I don't know if it was the solar flare /storm or the solstice but there is sure a lot of energy out there and trying to harness it and embrace it can be a challenge. If you are struggling as I am, I send you love and light and many prayers that we shall rise to our challenges and enlighten others...as Shi says "It's our job!!"  So now I have a new job...I was employed by the Universe/God/Life all along...I just didn't really recognize it. I had inklings of it but so nice to have someone describe it so clearly. Thank you Shi!!

Stay tuned to see more creative things coming from me soon!! :D It's going to be the BEST SUMMER EVER!! Right?  ;)

Do Schools Destroy Creativity?

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Do Schools Destroy Creativity?  YES. Some schools do. Some teachers do. That was my experience. I'm homeschooling my child but at some point she may have to or want to go to school. I can only pray that she doesn't have the experience so many people do.  I just Love this first video with Ken Robinson and what he says about the Beatles.

Here's my child after getting a time out on the first full day of grade one.

We have been home schooling since then.

Let me say there were many other factors on why we decided to homeschool, and she did do kindergarten and we enjoyed the first 2 of the 4 teachers she had that year.

We do classes but they are not in a school setting.

Here's a great article that addresses the student debt issues.
