This cRaZy Weather

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Well this is the cRaZiEsT Summer I have ever seen. In fact, Where is summer? I actually have a bit of tan, but it's because we went to Summer Live at Stanley Park last week and we were in sun most of that day and well I spend a lot of time walking outdoors, but seriously people are saying "Where did you go to get the tan?"

At the pool the other week I was laughing because we are all sooooooooo white. That's not the point though, the point is it's been darn cold. Yesterday as we went out for groceries, we could actually see our breath. CrAzY!!!  then when we came out from shopping it was warm and humid. So strange!

They said that after this cold wet winter it was going to be A HOT SUMMER! well it hasn't happened.

I don't have to much to complain about. Other people around our province, let alone the world are suffering much worse things. Flooding, Droughts, Fires, Tornadeos, all sorts of awful disasters related to the weather.

So now I ask the question, When are we going to do something about it?

Hmmm! When?
We keep saying the weather is getting weird...but I still see tons of traffic out there.

We keep hearing the polar ice cap is melting, polar bears drowning, and we have had COUNTLESS warnings that the world is in TROUBLE, but when just when and what are we going to do.

They Saved a Whale. ..AMAZING VIDEO

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

Well I'm balling like a baby after this one. So BEAUTIFUL. What an AMAZING STORY. Check it out for yourself.

Saving Valentina.6.8.11.h264.mov

Michael Fishbach narrates his encounter with a humpback whale entangled in a fishing net. Gershon Cohen and he have founded The Great Whale Conservancy to help and protect whales. Visit their website http://www.eii.org/gwc/, facebook page, and join them in helping to save these magnificent beings

 http://www.eii.org/gwc/gallery/

The Great Whale Conservancy (GWC) Blue Whale Protection Program

Our Goal

To protect blue whales along the California coast from ship-strike caused injuries and death.

The Facts

The blue whale is the largest animal species to have ever inhabited the Earth. The global population prior to human predation has been estimated at 350,000 individuals. Today that number is ~10,000. Blue whales inhabit every ocean but one of the largest subpopulations is the Northeast Pacific group. These whales transit four favored areas: the California Bight (south of Point Conception,) the west coast of Baja California, the Sea of Cortez, and the Costa Rica Dome. By far the largest number of blue whales congregates in the California Bight between June and October where food availability is very high. This area is also one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, with over 6000 cargo ships/year transiting the Santa Barbara Channel to and from the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

The Problem

Blue whales are most vulnerable to strikes by cargo ships, tankers, cruise ships, and other large vessels at night while feeding on krill, transiting, or resting. During the day krill descend hundreds of feet into the water column, but every evening the whale’s photosensitive prey re-concentrate near the surface. The whales follow the krill back to the dark surface waters, and may not react quickly enough to avoid the large ships. A ship collision usually ends in injury or death for these giants of the seas. The documented number of blue whales killed by ships along the coast of California has been as high as 5 whales in a year. The actual number of mortalities is unknown and is suspected to be many times higher because blue whales are negatively buoyant – they sink when they die. The total number of ship-strike kills represents a survival threat to this subgroup and the worldwide population.

The Solution

Despite their size, California’s blue whales are for the most part unseen, which to a great degree is why they remain unprotected. The GWC will utilize media-generating tools such as web-based videos and public presentations and actions involving life-size blue whale floats to inform the public, focus attention on state and federal agencies and ship owners, and force a strengthening of the rules and operational policies for vessels transiting critical blue whale habitat. We will not turn the corner on this issue until the general public becomes aware of the problem and begins to “speak for the whales.” We must succeed – it would truly be a tragedy to lose this magnificent species forever.
It took decades to institute strong protections, including adjusted shipping lanes, ship speeds, and the establishment of protected areas for North Atlantic right whales, despite 60 years of “protected status” and the knowledge that 1/3 of the known mortalities every year resulted from ship strikes. The survival of the right whale population still hangs by a thread. We can’t afford to negotiate for decades on protecting blue whales in the Pacific.

The Great Whale Conservancy (GWC) is a joint program of two premier projects of the Earth Island Institute: the International Marine Mammal Project and the Campaign to Safeguard America’s Waters. To help, please contact Michael Fishbach at IMMP (828) 675-9387, fishdeya@gmail.com, or Gershon Cohen Ph.D. at CSAW (907) 766-3005, gershon@aptalaska.net.

SAVE THE BUTTERFLIES--Milkweed Disappearing= No Butterflies

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

It's very disturbing you know. My little girl and I have been looking and looking, last year and this year, we never see caterpillars and rarely see a butterfly. Such a shame and darn right scary. As a child, we played with caterpillars all the time. They were the brown and black ones. Really fuzzy and fun. Like a little bear. But there just aren't any. I'm sure it's the chemicals. All the spraying to keep gardens so lush, and the pulling of weeds...there was a lot of milkweed where I was as a child.

In Mexico we saw lots of butterflies, of course we saw a drastic change from one year to the next. One year it was very very green and we would walk down this road that we call butterfly alley. Lots and lots of butterflies, it was so beautiful, they loved the bougainvilleas.

The next year it was soooooooo dry and the bougainvilleas were in bad shape and there were none until much later there was some rain and then flowers came and some butterflies came.

Please Don't Spray Chemicals. Please Plant flowers the butterflies love. We need caterpillars and butterflies.

NEW VIDEO- Lilies & Ducklings

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Check out this cute little video I made yesterday! Originally it was a birthday e-video I made someone, but I've edited. Would you like something like this for someone special, let me know. Would love to make one for you.

LOVE IS BETTER THAN MONEY!

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

This video was created last year when we returned from our second winter in Mexico. So these photos were from the first journey the year before. It was a tricky journey. Lots of people thought I was crazy. I just knew in my heart it was critical my little girl needed to get to know her Mexican father but more importantly learn her culture and the language. You can't learn that in a two week trip. You need to be immersed. So that's what we did. We landed in Cancun and bused it down to Zipolite, stopping at Merida, Palenque, Agua Azul, Mishol-ha, and San Cristobal. I believe it gave her a wonderful glimpse of how gorgeous Mexico is.

I have created 74 videos and you can find some of  them on Vimeo and the rest are on Youtube. I hope you'll check them out. I started to make a 2 hour film and it's in progress, so stay tuned.

If you have any questions please contact me, and be sure to check out my blog Adventurez in Mexico http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.com/

I just love this song by Mysti Mayhem, BETTER THAN MONEY, the words love is better than money just summed up everything so beautifully because it really was how I felt. The 'LOVE FOR MY DAUGHTER IS SO MUCH MORE IMPORTANT THAN MONEY.'

I was totally into just living in a little room on the beach, basically camping almost, no fridge, just a cooler, and making do with what we had. We had a fantastic time. It wasn't always easy, we really had a small budget so it was stressful at times, but we were basically adopted and felt very  loved by the Mexican family we rented from and the people  there and friends we met helped so much.  I would love to go back, I hope to soon.

Isn't it Ironic

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

So my little girl said "What does Ironic mean?" and I said just hang on and will Google it, because I thought, it will be easy just to read the definition,  but Wikipedia was a little windy and I said hang on, let's google the lyrics of this song, and the words seems so sad...so I said hang on - let's watch this video. She really liked it, she said "Hey, she just ROCKS OUT!! " and I said "Yah! Cool eh!" Thanks Alana for helping me explain it so well. She might be a bit fuzzy on it still but she's only 8, but she definitely gets the gist of it.!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ironyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irony

From Wikipedia
A situation is often said to be ironic (situational irony) if the actions taken have an effect exactly opposite from what was intended.

Destroying Our Food - The World According to Monsanto -Video

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Wow, this is so sad and shocking. Glad I don't eat soy...I didn't watch it all, it's first thing Sunday morning and I don't want to get blue, but this is really scary stuff. What shocking is the lack of ethics. People only caring about money and not about the responsibility of destroying the health of this planet and it's inhabitants. Wow the Karma of these people is going to be so bad.

Way to Go Kate

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

I love her already. I saw this on the news last night, it made me cry. It's so touching, I just see this as such a beautiful moment in both their lives and all of ours. Bridging boundaries and barriers, Kate and William were fabulous this week. The showed they are real people and they looked like they had a really great time. I love that they visited Slave Lake. It was nice that they would show interest in such a terrible tragedy.

I hope to Vancouver soon, I would like to take Angel to see them.

A Ton of MakeUp

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Well this is really a weird little video but it's Friday, so let's have some fun!

I don't wear makeup anymore, I did when I was younger and I was caught in all that. I stopped wearing foundation when I heard a radio show explaining how many of the chemicals used caused cancer, gradually I just stopped wearing all of it.

When we were in Mexico, what is the point as you sweat so much it all comes off and definitely not wise to mix makeup and the hot sun, so I guess that's another reason how I stopped. Check out this girls face as they add 365 layers of makeup in one day. At the end it's just dripping off. Pretty gross!!

I don't know what it says here (I can guess at it quite well though)but wanted to credit the people who made this film so I am posting it.

sarebbe andato bene".

Good-bye Elevator, Hello Couch

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Today is a funny day for me, a day of Gratitude, a day of Good-byes and New Beginnings.

Today after months of waiting they took out the old elevator...we've been using the new one for a few weeks now, and it's wonderful, but it's sort of sad too. I've lived in this building off and on for many years now.

I've had my own apartment, lived with friends, subletted and repeated this process. We moved away but came back and I'm sure we will do it again. That elevator and I had a long term relationship and I took it for granted...until today when I saw him/her being taken away by the workmen, all it's metal bits and pieces and the particle board...being compacted and thrown away.

I was sad realizing how many times that elevator had moved me, or how many birthday parties it saw, how it gave me a ride when I brought my cherub home from the hospital or all the sad moments when my mom passed and the happy moments when we left and came home from Mexico. If the walls could talk ...OMG the things that elevator saw.

Well Good bye Elevator, THANK YOU for never breaking down while I was inside, Thanks for all the rides, Thanks for the good times!!

Hello Couch. I got a new couch today! So Happy!! There was a really great sale ($150) on at London Drugs. I really needed a new couch, as I have been sleeping on this little cot thing from Ikea, but it's just not wide enough and well I had some issues a while back and got rid of the original mattress, so just had a bunch of blankets on there and basically this thing sucked because it was hard as a rock.

Anyways now I have a lovely new couch. YAY!!!

So as I said it was a Day of Gratitude. Thank you UNIVERSE for smiling on me.

I also want to thank the Universe for some of the great connections I've made lately and the gorgeous weather and for letting me be inspired.

Thank you for letting my kid learn to ride her bike and I got my bike fixed yesterday...so we are MOBILE! Yay!!!

So Everyday the plan is to go out an Paint. Thank You God for Inspiration!!

Well have to run, my cherub is hungry. Thank you God and the Universe for the delicious salmon, rice and carrots we are about to have. YUM!

May you all be as blessed and have a wonderful day!!

Happy 4th of July- Despite the Drought & Debt

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2011

http://tinawinterlik.blogspot.com

Watching the TV last night, I saw the huge drought that is happening in the U.S. My heart goes out to the people dealing with this, and now this huge trillion dollar debt issue. I tried to read a few articles on it, and I think I grasp the gist of it, and well I'm sending you all an Angel. My my the whole is in a heap of trouble, and having a child makes it all the more scary, and Asking the Question ...Can we weather this storm?

Talking to a friend this morning, we were saying how it's so sad, the US just came out of one disaster(Joplin) and now it's another. This drought is really scary.

The news said that many of the fireworks were scaled back or banned due to the threat of fire.

Anyways, I just wanted to tell you that up here in Canada, we are thinking about you and sending our prayers that things get better for our neighbours in the south.

We need to work together on climate change and social justice and issues related to finances.

So I hope you take care and have a safe and Very Happy Fourth of July and that the debt is taken care of , the same wishes I have for here and all over the world. I'm Praying for God to send in the Angels and help us.  We really need some help.
