I was devastated today! When I heard that the Enbridge Pipeline was approved, I wanted to throw up.

I was so sad, I was in disbelief. How? After all the petitions, rallies, blogposts, ....Harper still pushed it threw. How EVIL!!

I took a nap...I just wanted to forget...I knew the rally was on at 5:30 but I felt so low I almost didn't go. But I did, Angel and I both went and I am so glad. I feel better now. I feel united. We are in for the fight of our lives I fear.

Here is the video I did manage to get. So sad because my battery ran out and then my camera space was full so I missed some of the best parts, especially Ta'Kaiya's songs and but here is what I did get.

Listen to what these people have to say, especially these brave women. Come on  ladies of BC, Canada, US, Mexico, The World,  we have the power, we have a voice and it's time it was heard. Let's protect OUR CHILDREN and MOTHER EARTH and get behind them and support them in anyway we can.

This is going to take effort from the entire INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY!! We need to shut down the real TERRORIST and we all know who it is...it's HARPER!! He needs to go to jail for crimes against nature and humanity.  Correction : July 2nd is the next rally- GET OUT THERE!!

It's not worth the risk! This video explains it all so clearly.

Risking it All - Oil on our Coast from Twyla Roscovich on Vimeo.

"The north and central coast of British Columbia is one of last great wilderness areas that still supports a vibrant & productive ecosystem.

Home to thousands of runs of salmon, steelhead, grizzlies, wolves, orca, rare white bears, dolphins, porpoises and hundreds of other species, the coast is a natural spring of wealth & wonder.

The plan to build the Enbridge pipeline, with ensuing tanker traffic, threatens all of this- the coastal ecosystem, the coastal economies and local food security."

This is such a brilliant idea and it matches nicely with the other idea I had this morning and that is building an Eco School in Zipolite.

http://zipolitemexico.blogspot.ca/2014/06/lets-build-eco-school-in-zipolite.html

So I have this idea to build an Eco School in Zipolite. For long time I have had a dream of putting an Edible Schoolyard in Zipolite. Have you heard of the Eco School in Sayulita and there's a Green School in Bali and they actually have an Eco School in Sayulita so there is no reason we shouldn't have on it Zipolite

For a little bit, Angel went to Arroyo Tres. This location would be perfect I think.  It has a lovely little piece of land behind it that would make a wonderful garden.  By the time we return Angel will be to old to attend...if say it's just for elementary but if it's for high school that would be wonderful.
Even if she could help with the elementary children that would be a wonderful experience. She spent the last year helping peer mentor the kindergartens so I know she would be a great asset.

I know the school she attends now...they got a grant from LULULEMON for $9000 to build an Edible Schoolyard...

For that kind of money...we could build a whole school for $9000 ...possibly...depending on the materials but I believe we could go to Indiegogo and start something. https://www.indiegogo.com/campaigns/new
What do you think? I can't do this by myself...and I am not even there right now....

Hey everyone, I was wondering if you could take a moment and think happy positive thoughts for Stephanie.

You don't know her and neither do I but on my way to work I passed by her and she was crying. I asked if she was okay and she said "not really." I asked if she wanted a hug...and she said "okay!" Then I told her it was all going to be okay and she just had to think positive.

I looked into her eyes and asked if it was "really bad." She said she hadn't worked in like 6 months and she just got a job and she lost it. I told her that whenever a door closes and new one opens.

Then I told her how just last year I got a job at Vancouver Children's hospital taking photos of the babies...but it wasn't a good fit and that the same thing happened, I lost it the first day...but that very soon after I was accepted to my 6 month intensive program at Emily Carr in the Interaction Design Program and then as soon as that ended I got my job at the Granville Island Soap Gallery. I told her to project what she wants and it will happen.

I gently but firmly told her to stay positive. She said "she would try" between the tears.... I said "don't try, do it...be positive and good things will happen."
and I smiled a lot...

Then I told her I had to rush off for work but that everything will be okay. She thanked me and said I had helped her a lot and she really needed to hear something like that.

So that is why I would like you to all say a little prayer and hope she finds the perfect job.

And also the next time you see someone crying...at least ask if they are okay...a few kind words and hug can really help turn around someone's bad day.

We've all been there... Sending you all GREAT BIG HUG and saying prayers and thinking positive thoughts for you all to achieve your dreams. Love ya

Keep An Open Mind

Blog post by Tina Winterlik © 2014

http://zipolita.com/
http://zipolitazstudioz.blogspot.com
http://twitter.com/#!/zipolita @zipolita

zipolita@gmail.com

So let's see where to start....I have bad cold, made a lot worse by what happened this week. Stress it is definitely is a monster.

So let's back up a bit. You know how people often look down on people on Social Assistance/Welfare and shake their heads and think something negative like why can't they get a job ...

Well now I am fortunate, I just finished my course at Emily Carr and I also got a little steady job for a couple a days a week to help me when I'm in between Web Design/ Mobile App gigs.

I was adding it up the other day...including 6 months of my pregnancy I have been off and on the system about 5 years and I hated every minute as it's just stressful. It's super hard to get it and then it's hard to get off...remember I have been supporting my 11 year old daughter by myself and I have no parents and I have no family nearby. Now people have stepped up to the plate and helped out occasionally and I truly appreciative but I want to share something with you.

Let me tell you about my week. I worked and then had a day off and then the next day I went to a funeral of someone I loved very much. My daughter had a cold and I kept her home from school 2 days...if I was working full-time or when she was younger I couldn't do that without help. Childcare in Vancouver is super expensive.

I got paid...and this is the part I want you to realize..
I had a huge hassle trying to cash my cheque...because it was a first cheque and my employer doesn't have direct deposit because it costs money and he only has a few employees.

I walked miles...with my cold from one bank to another and back trying to resolve this. Getting sicker and more stressed.  Now it all worked out but don't you see how the system is set up to screw the poor.

You finally get a job. Then someone you love dies or something happens that makes you vulnerable, then your kid is sick- and if they are little you need daycare...and you get sick....buses are so expensive...you have no money because you can't cash the frigging check...at your bank with out the holding if 5 days...

you go to bank where the check was issued but they want to talk to the person that wrote it...that person isn't available till later...you walk back and forth...back and forth...meanwhile sad and missing the loved one that passed...sick with this stupid cold...stressed because you can't cash they cheque...the buses are expensive so your walking...your energy is zapped and ...well that is the sh_t that can happen to people.

Now what if that person gets really sick now...misses work...loses the new job. I am fine so that won't happen to me as I am going to rest all day...but what about the person who gets screwed like this...

This is how it happens people. This is how people fall through cracks and end up poor and homeless because the banks make your life hell. Why do they have so much power...why do we give them our money. It's dum.

Now the really annoying part and that may also lead to illness/job loss etc... is lack of good food...all the energy that I normally use to walk and go get my groceries is gone because I used it up walking miles to the bank and the cold has zapped me...and I didn't mention it but I also went to the doctor but the wait was so long I had to leave and come back...

So do you see...do you see how little sh_t like this can happen and that it isn't one thing...that tears a person down...people are resislant but life can really give you sh_t kicking sometimes...even though you are trying so hard...but it's exhausting.

Think about that next time,  before you think thoughts like "why aren't they working" or "why are they so lazy" or ...whatever...

Not only that...the doctor was very kind but he did offer me some kind of Valium thingy to help me relax and then the pain in my ears would go away  and other sinus spray and antibotic...to combat the pain in my ears. I thought I had a really bad sinus infection but we figured it out that I was probably clenching my jaw really hard.

I said I would pass on the Valium and asked would it be okay just to have some wine and he said that I could take those meds with wine.   In the end he said I might want to wait to buy them as the cold should clear up and by relaxing the pain in my ears would get better.
(the spray cost $45 and the antibiotic $25)  I didn't buy either(but what about the person that does, they work so hard and then end up spending it on medicine...that sucks)

But see...what if I took the valium...yuck...then I would be all groggy well I just want to show you what happens to people and how some decisions really mess people up.

So since I was able to cash my check I bought a big bottle of lavender...which is why I think I got sick in the first place....because I was out, because I had no money. ...and I grabbed a bottle of wine and came home, watched a video, had a drink and went to bed. Today I am feeling better.

This is not written very well because I am still sick and tired and I am heading back to bed but do you see it now...do see how peoples lives can get all f__k'd up.  It's not one thing...it is one thing piling and piling on top of the other.

I want to make a little side note. After I got the check cashed I took the bus...and while riding I saw man that had a serious disability but he was coping well and it was a reality check that we can overcome huge challenges.

So my point is keep an open mind. Don't judge that single mom or that homeless kid or that addict so harsh...you don't know what happened to them...instead say a prayer for them, think a nice thought and project that their life will get much better soon. Keep an open mind because you never know if one day this sh_t could happen to you...because we are all the same. We are one!

Check out this Tedtalks, it's very interesting!

If you had a gift of reading people's minds, where would you work?

There is this woman that works at Safeway, she has these intense questioning ice blue eyes and  and everytime I see her I feel she is reaching in ...

that she can see right into my soul and I feel myself pull back and say "No" - as she asks- "How are you?" or "Do you want your milk in a bag?"

Even Angel noticed- So it made me wonder about - why a person with such a gift would work at Safeway.

The thoughts would be interesting- random- maybe sort of like headlines... where you would just read them but not have to act on them.

What if you worked somewhere high security or high finance you may feel you would be responsible if you didn't act on the "secret thoughts you may hear"

In Safeway it would be like "I'm so hungry, I can't wait to cook this steak!" or "Man, the price of cereal has gone up" or "Gee, I hope I have enough to pay, I have that extra $5 I put away..."

That's why I think she reads, hears, feels, senses and acts as she does.

It may not be a special gift- maybe she's just ultra sensitive and has just  fine-tuned her skill, after hearing that thought over and over, in the minds of single moms, in the province of British Columbia, as they approach her till attempting to pay for the  groceries to feed her kid.

Maybe she has ...what's that word...OH YA!! Empathy...something our city/province/government/community lacks...or how else is it explained?? Who knows maybe she's a single mom too!

Makes you go hmmmmmmmm ??? doesn't it!

On a Note of Gratitude, I just completed my program at Emily Carr in Interaction Design Essentials and hope to be designing and developing website and apps for clients shortly.

In the mean time, I've been blessed with a "sweet-scented"  gig working in retail at the "delicious" Granville Island Soap Gallery and so things are looking up and coming together but it took a ton of hard work and it shouldn't be this way.

We live in this great country, this great province, in a great city, my mom was born in Vancouver, and I was born near by...I have a right to live here..

For our children's sake and for a healthy next generation things have got to change and quickly... before so much more damage is done to our beautiful youth.

I have always personally felt that one of the big reasons woman are living in poverty or have less wealth is because of their periods. Why you may ask...because it costs about $10 a month or $100 or more a year to deal with our periods and there are host of other related issues that people do not discuss or even consider.

A documentary film on an unlikely hero whose machines are empowering rural women across India.

You can watch the whole movie for $3.99, just click at the top of the screen n this video. (Unfortunately it doesn't stream on Android and Window devices...it's a Vimeo thing )

This AMAZING MAN Arunachalam Muruganantham http://www.menstrualman.com/ has done something incredible. He invented a machine...his story is incredible, sad and happy and he watching him you realize what and incredibly wise soul his is. I just loved hearing this Tedtalks. Check out more about him at the links provided and SHARE!! SHARE THIS EVERYWHERE!! Let's get EVERYONE talking about this because periods are apart of EVERYONES life whether you are a man or a woman, you are affected in one way or another and do not even realize the complexity of the situation.

Read this article here, it's lovely.

https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl/photos/a.360833590619627.72897.316489315054055/656221391080844/?type=1

Here are two excerpts

"After spending years developing a simple machine to make inexpensive sanitary pads, Arunachalam Muruganantham has become the unlikely leader of a menstrual health revolution in rural India. Over sixteen years, Muruganantham's machine has spread to 1,300 villages in 23 states and since most of his clients are NGOs and women's self-help groups who produce and sell the pads directly in a "by the women, for the women, and to the women" model, the average machine also provides employment for ten women. "

"Finding volunteers was nearly impossible: women were embarrassed, or afraid of myths about sanitary pads that say that women who use them will go blind or never marry. Muruganantham came up with an ingenious solution: “I became the man who wore a sanitary pad,” he says. He made an artificial uterus, filled it with goat’s blood, and wore it throughout the day. But his determination had severe consequences: his village concluded he was a pervert with a sexual disease, his mother left his household in shame and his wife left him. As he remarks in the documentary "Menstrual Man" about his experience, "So you see God's sense of humour. I'd started the research for my wife and after 18 months she left me!"

Also see these great links!! Thanks for sharing Mighty Girl  https://www.facebook.com/amightygirl

Well in keeping with the theme of the last post and because it is so true...our dreams do come true..we just have to believe and keep on dreaming them.

So beautiful. We should do this at English bay by the 2 big rings..it would be perfect!! :D

I dreamed all this and made it happen!!

And that I would take the course I am about to complete and that I would brand myself as Zipolita and  build this website http://zipolita.com (still in progress...almost there...) and that I would make an app...   http://adventurezinmexico.blogspot.mx/2014/03/mobile-app-for-zipolite.html     (in progress)

Tedtalks Day 2- Edward Snowden & lots more

So it was the amazing Tedtalk. I arrived just before 8:30 am at the Vancouver Public Library. There were only 3 people there when I first arrived but then more arrived..slowly.

The first person was
Bran Ferren-Technology designer  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bran_Ferren
I found his speech very interesting, as he talked about being a young child and being raised by artists. Yet he didn't want to be one, instead he found taking things apart and putting them back together much more interesting. Reminds me of my brother, he was always taking clocks and things apart. Anyways, when Bran Ferren was a child they would travel and often just take him to a science museum and drop him off and let him wander and learn and explore for hours. When he was nine they went to the Pantheon   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheon,_Rome.

He said he was intrigued by this wonderously cool dark building with a hole in the roof. It is called an oculus. As his eyes adjusted to the light, he started to see more and more, like the holes in the floor to the let the water drain when it rains...but it was the roof that amazed him. He questioned his  father  when the roof was built. He was shocked to learn that people were so intelligent 2000 years before. He being just nine years of age had been to the Pyramids the year before and he figured that with money, and brute force and labourers available, even he could build the pyramids, but this roof blew him away.

"The Pantheon dome. The concrete for the coffered dome was poured in moulds, probably mounted on temporary scaffolding. The oculus is the main source of natural light." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pantheon,_Rome

He said it took 5 miracles to build this roof, and he went into a lot of detail...which I am too tired to share at this moment but it was really interesting. He figures that  Autonomous http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autonomous_car
are the future and gave reasons why. I'm not sure I like the idea. I don't want any cars. It feels to IRobot to me.

I think the most important thing I took away is that we have to teach our kids to get off the screens and learn about the world around them and to teach the to explore, play, discover and that even they if the do not want to be like us, embrace them and support them in what ever they chose.  Powerful wise words.

So next was -Marc Kushner-Architect-http://hwkn.com/MARC-KUSHNER
"MARC KUSHNER, AIA, is cofounder of award-winning architecture firm HollwichKushner (HWKN) and CEO of Architizer.com - the largest platform for architecture online. Both as a practicing architect, and in his role at Architizer, Marc is focused on making architecture more relevant and accessible."

Check out his website- Very Cool!!
You can tweet him on twitter https://twitter.com/marchitizer

Now he is a very interesting man. He talked about how social media has really affected how architecture is created.

He talks about the brutal era http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brutalist_architecture   and how everything was cement. The coolest thing he showed was this building he called ugly. It was created with hay and then cement was poured on it and then a cow was invited to eat all the hay and what was left was this little cave with the most gorgeous view of a sunset in Spain.

Guggenheim-Bilbao

 He talked about the http://www.guggenheim.org/bilbao
and how somehow people seeing it and sharing it shaped and changed the way architecture is built.

That because it created tourism, every mayor wanted one...but the point he was making it was architects know how to create incredible works but that people would stick to old ideas because it's expensive and they were scared to try new things.

He wants every one to know that architects want to build fantastic buildings and they are ready and now with Social Media we are ready. So hopefully he and many others will build lots of green buildings. :)  Like the green buildings I pinned on my Pinterest board- The Changerz.

  • Yoruba Richen - desaturate
    Yoruba Richen Documentary filmmaker
"In her documentary films, Yoruba Richen unites African-American, feminist and LGBTQ voices in a renewed cry for civil rights for all."

Yoruba was very interesting. She talked about the civil rights movement and the gay rights movement. How they were moving in tandem and pointed out the really important events that helped progress things but then where it had major set backs too.  She mentioned Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela but pointed important  dates when Gay Rights had made strides with the help of  Latinos/Africa Americans and how they have worked together in the past and they need to be united...because these Human Rights - http://www.un.org/en/documents/udhr/

She made a movie about it  called the newblack http://www.newblackfilm.com/filmmakers/

"The New Black is a documentary that tells the story of how the African-American community is grappling with the gay rights issue in light of the recent gay marriage movement and the fight over civil rights. The film documents activists, families and clergy on both sides of the campaign to legalize gay marriage and examines homophobia in the black community’s institutional pillar—the black church and reveals the Christian right wing’s strategy of exploiting this phenomenon in order to pursue an anti-gay political agenda."

"The New Black is a documentary

And this happened, they said Edward Snowden was there, and I was like "no way!!" And he came out on a bot. Blew me away. If you care about your rights, if you care about the internet then listen up because this affects ALL OF US!!

"Appearing by telepresence robot, Edward Snowden speaks at TED2014 about surveillance and Internet freedom. The right to data privacy, he suggests, is not a partisan issue, but requires a fundamental rethink of the role of the internet in our lives — and the laws that protect it. "Your rights matter,” he say, "because you never know when you're going to need them." Chris Anderson interviews, with special guest Tim Berners-Lee".
